A fire broke out on Saturday in Tehran's Evin prison, where many of Iran's political and dual-national detainees are held, and witnesses reported hearing gunfire. An Iranian judiciary statement said a prison workshop was set on fire "after a fight among a number of prisoners convicted of financial crimes and theft". The prison, located in the foothills at the northern edge of the Iranian capital, holds criminal convicts as well as political detainees. Another witness said families of prisoners had gathered in front of the main prison entrance. Early on Sunday, IRNA carried a video it said showed prison areas damaged by fire.

DUBAI, Oct 15 (Reuters) - Online Iranian videos appeared to show smoke rising on Saturday from Tehran's Evin prison, which holds political prisoners, as shots and an alarm could be heard. There was no immediate comment from Iranian officials or reports from state media on the footage, which was shared on social media. "Gunshots can be heard from Evin Prison and smoke can be seen," said the activist website 1500tasvir, which also shared video footage it said showed special forces on motorbikes heading for the prison. Multiple social media videos show a large, dark plume of smoke billowing near Evin prison in Iran. It is notoriously brutal facility where the regime incarcerates political dissidents. CNN's Jomana Karadsheh has the latest.
At least 185 people, including 19 minors, have been killed, hundreds injured and thousands have been arrested by security forces, according to rights groups. The Iranian government says more than 20 security forces have been killed and that it will investigate civilian deaths. PASSIONATE ABOUT WOMEN'S RIGHTSThe Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has called on Iranian authorities to "immediately and unconditionally release ... all journalists arrested because of their coverage of Mahsa Amini’s death and the protests that have followed". It said last month that at least 28 journalists had been detained by the security forces, including Hamedi. Friends of Hamedi described her as a brave journalist who is passionate about women's issues and rights.
