The S & P 500 is on the verge of something unexpected — especially for September. The broad market index entered the week less than 1% below a record last reached in July. Krinky isn't the only one on the Street treading carefully with the S & P 500 near record highs. "With the S & P 500 close to our YE 2024 price target again, we remain neutral on the S & P 500 for now," wrote Lori Calvasina, head of global equity research at RBC Capital Markets. Here's why Americans are going back to Chili's

"Our marketing team has done a great job of getting back into what we call the zeitgeist or being relevant again," Kevin Hochman, CEO of Chili's parent Brinker International , told CNBC. A viral social media presence and a push toward value-oriented advertising have propelled sales growth every quarter of fiscal 2024. The brand grew rapidly in the early 2000s, but in the decade that followed the Great Recession, Chili's U.S. locations declined and sales growth flattened. It made Chili's fun again," said Joe Wilson, managing partner of a Chili's in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Watch the video to learn more about how Chili's made a comeback.

The market's turn toward treating good economic news as positive for stocks is pictured here in a chart from Citi strategists, showing the three-month correlation between the S & P 500 and the Citi U.S. Economic Surprise index has turned sharply higher. The S & P 500's low for the week was Wednesday morning, right at the 5400 level where it previously hit a low a week ago Friday after a tepid employment report. Forward 12-month S & P 500 earnings forecasts continue to rise smartly, now approaching $270. But, thanks to the past two months of sideways churn, that's down from 21.7 when the S & P first hit its current level in July. And the rally last week could well have front-run any potential positive inference from the Fed's move next week.

Economists Ed Hyman is backing off his call for a hard landing, even though he still sees the potential for a recession ahead. "History and experience say to stick with a hard landing outlook," he said in a client note Thursday. "However, the hard math that our team has reviewed says flip to a soft landing outlook. "In our view, arguments for a hard landing are still persuasive," Hyman wrote. "So this flip could be a mistake," Hyman wrote.

Job openings slumped to their lowest level in 3½ years in July, the Labor Department reported Wednesday in another sign of slack in the labor market. "The labor market is no longer cooling down to its pre-pandemic temperature, it's dropped past it," said Nick Bunker, head of economic research at the Indeed Hiring Lab. "Nobody, and certainly not policymakers at the Federal Reserve, should want the labor market to get any cooler at this point." While the job openings level declined, layoffs increased to 1.76 million, up 202,000 from June. "The still low level of layoffs and tick up in hires suggests the labor market is not cracking.
