CNN —Armenian soccer player Henrikh Mkhitaryan has called on international leaders to “stand up against ethnic cleansing” in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. The region has its own de facto government that is backed by Armenia, but is not officially recognized by Armenia or any other country. The latest figures mean that more than one-third of the region’s roughly ethnic Armenians have left Nagorno-Karabakh for Armenia. The blockade prevented the import of food, fuel and medicine to Nagorno-Karabakh, prompting fears that residents were being left to starve. The closure of the Lachin corridor has also prevented international organizations and foreign media from accessing Nagorno-Karabakh.

Sept 27 (Reuters) - Olympique de Marseille have named Italian Gennaro Gattuso as coach following the departure of Marcelino, the French Ligue 1 club said on Wednesday. Gattuso left Valencia in January, seven months after his appointment with the LaLiga side just above the relegation zone. Marseille are eighth in Ligue 1 after two wins, three draws and a 4-0 loss to Paris St Germain. Ajax were trailing 3-0 in the second half when the game was initially suspended in the 56th minute before being abandoned. It was only the second time Feyenoord had scored four goals away against traditional rivals Ajax and took them up to third in the standings. The defeat adds pressure on new coach Maurice Steijn whose future has been the subject of much speculation. Klopp expecting 'solid' West Ham to be tricky opponents

Sept 22 (Reuters) - West Ham United are one of the Premier League's strongest teams, Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said on Friday, as he urged his side to be at their very best against last season's Europa Conference League winners. Liverpool are three points ahead in third, but Klopp warned his side not to be complacent against the team managed by veteran boss David Moyes. "There are so many extremely strong opponents, West Ham is one of them," Klopp told a press conference. "With all the other guys they had already, it looks really solid and that makes it really tricky. Klopp had expressed his frustration last week after being handed an early fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers following the international break.

Solskjaer has sympathy for under-pressure Ten Hag

LONDON, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said he sympathises with current incumbent Erik ten Hag who is under pressure after a poor start to the season. It's a dream job, but it's difficult," Solskjaer said in an interview with The Athletic. "It was a decision that was very difficult to turn down and I felt we had to take it, but it turned out wrong," Solskjaer said. Solskjaer never won a trophy as a coach at United, the closest being the 2021 Europa League final when they lost to Villarreal on penalties. His reign ended after a 4-1 drubbing at Watford nearly two years ago -- a performance Solskjaer said he knew would result in him losing his job.

Barcelona bank on Gundogan, Lewandowski experience

BARCELONA, Aug 7 (Reuters) - Barcelona claimed their 27th LaLiga title and first for four years last season led by coach Xavi Hernandez, relying on a mixture of young talent and seasoned veterans like striker Robert Lewandowski who was the league's top scorer. They recruited experienced midfielder Ikay Gundogan, who captained Manchester City to the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League treble last season, ending a successful seven-year stint in England during which he won 12 major trophies. Gundogan will help mentor a young Barca squad as they try to retain the LaLiga crown and get back to winning ways in the Champions League after years of European disappointments. After six seasons in the Champions League, where Klopp's side reached the final three times and won the trophy in 2019, Liverpool now find themselves back in the Europa League. Premier League clubs sacked 14 managers last season but Klopp, currently the longest-serving coach at a single club in England's top flight, was never in danger of losing his job. Liverpool did not inject fresh blood into an ageing midfield while injuries in the forward line scuppered a title challenge. This year Saudi Arabian clubs have forced Liverpool's hand, with the cash-rich league tearing up the Anfield club's transition plans by luring away their two midfield stalwarts. Returning to the Champions League will be their first priority, which is why a top four finish -- or even winning the Europa League -- will be the bare minimum that is expected of Liverpool.
