Tuesday's debut of exchange-traded funds that hold ether is widely seen as a significant event for the crypto industry, although it may not see the success or fanfare that bitcoin ETFs did earlier this year. The ether ETFs come about six months after the launch of bitcoin ETFs , which saw some of the most successful debuts in the industry's history. And so the question is how much impact on price is really going to have?" Mike Novogratz, CEO of Galaxy Digital, whose Invesco Galaxy Ethereum ETF (QETH) began trading Tuesday, agreed ether ETF flows could be small compared to bitcoin funds'. "We think it'll be about 20% as many flows [that] will go into the ether ETF in the first six months that went into bitcoin [ETFs]," he said in a separate "Squawk Box" interview.

Ether ETFs officially began trading in the U.S. on Tuesday, putting the world's second largest crypto currency in a vehicle favored by many professional investors and advisors. The new funds come from traditional fund issuers like BlackRock and Fidelity and crypto-specific companies such as Grayscale, marking another step in the increased integration of digital assets into mainstream finance. The ether ETFs are widely expected to be smaller than the bitcoin funds, both because of the relative size of the two markets and the fact that ether may not be as familiar to many investors. The ether ETFs also do not offer staking, which is a process that can give crypto-native investors additional yield. Both the cheapest and most expensive funds come from Grayscale, which is effectively converting its multi-billion dollar private ether fund into two ETFs with different price points.

Bitcoin led the crypto market lower on Tuesday – the first trading day for ether ETFs – as Mt. Gox transferred more bitcoin to creditors and investors took profits following the cryptocurrency's best week since March. The market is expected to absorb the negative impact, thanks to long-term optimism on the success of ether ETFs as well as the U.S. presidential election. "Part of that is the bitcoin ETF adoption is in the early innings – a lot of the largest pools of money for that ETF have not even been turned on yet," he added. He pointed to the launch of bitcoin ETFs in January, when bitcoin surged to a record before plummeting 20% and then advanced to another new high.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission appears to have given the green light for exchange-traded funds that hold ether , the world's second-largest cryptocurrency. It approved rule changes for exchanges to list ether funds in May. Some of the companies that have been vying to launch ether funds include massive asset managers such as BlackRock, Fidelity and VanEck. The ether ETFs come about six months after the launch of bitcoin ETFs, which saw some of the most successful debuts in the industry's history. The ether funds are not expected to be as popular as the bitcoin funds, in part because the total market for ether is roughly one-fourth the size of the leading cryptocurrencies.

Spot ether ETFs could launch as soon as July 22, reports say. Wall Street has issued a range of outlooks on how the world's second-largest cryptocurrency will move once the ETFs launch. The bank expects these funds to drive $15 billion to $45 billion worth of ether inflows in a 12-month window. Bulls derived their confidence from how bitcoin behaved after its spot ETFs launch in January. They noted bitcoin's first-mover advantage and stressed that the ether token offers functionality that wouldn't be accessible through the ETFs, thus limiting demand.

Dollar drifts as Powell comments bring September rate cut in focus

The dollar fell slightly on Monday after comments from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, while cryptocurrencies rose on bets that an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump lifted his reelection chances. The dollar hung around five-week lows on Tuesday as comments from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell bolstered the case for a rate cut in September, while cryptocurrencies gained on rising odds of former President Donald Trump getting reelected. The comments, likely Powell's last until his press conference following the Fed's July 30-31 meeting, shifted rate cut expectations. Markets are now anticipating 68 basis points of easing this year, with a rate cut in September fully priced in, CME FedWatch tool showed. "Markets may need to wait longer for the confirmation of their September rate cut hopes, and growth and labor data will be on the radar such as retail sales today."

BlackRock CEO Larry Fink told CNBC's " Squawk on the Street " that he sees a future for bitcoin after previously being a " proud skeptic " of the cryptocurrency. "I'm a major believer that there's a role for bitcoin in portfolios," Fink said Monday, calling it "digital gold." The firm's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) has raked in more than $18 billion since its launch in January, making it the biggest bitcoin exchange-traded fund. Fink said political risk and rising government debt are some of the reasons for investors to own bitcoin. Fink said even outside of bitcoin, he sees rising public spending as one of the biggest issues facing the world.

Spot ether ETFs could hit the market as soon as this week, pending U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission approval, and Bitwise Asset Management's Matthew Hougan plans to get in on the action. Hougan's firm is applying for spot ether ETFs. Hougan is referring to the first spot bitcoin ETFs that launched in January. Spot bitcoin ETFs have attracted about $15 billion since their launch and currently hold two of the top ETF inflows this year, according to FactSet. Hougan views bitcoin's recent success as unprecedented and sees it as a bullish indicator for spot ether ETFs.

The next round of filings for spot ether ETFs with the SEC is due today, part of the ongoing regulatory process required before spot ether ETFs can be launched. One thing's for sure: the launch of spot bitcoin ETFs this year has been a success. That's still true for this year, but two of the top 10 ETF inflows year to date have been into spot bitcoin ETFs: iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) at number four, and Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Trust (FBTC) at number eight. Would 50% of the inflows of the spot bitcoin ETF be a win? We'll talk about this with Matt Hougan from Bitwise Asset Management, one of the applicants for a spot ether ETF.

The best-performing exchange-traded funds in the second half will likely be decided by broader shifts in the markets and economy. Even with mounting uncertainty, however, there are some types of ETFs that could emerge as winners. Equities A handful of stocks were big winners in the first half, and some narrowly focused ETFs were able to ride that wave. Single-stock funds tied to Nvidia have also seen heavy interest, including the GraniteShares 2x Long Nvidia ETF (NVDL) . However, Hougan said he didn't think that omission would be a big hurdle for ETF investors.

When I saw the Michael Shear story in The Times on July 4, recounting how President Biden had stumbled talking to Black radio hosts days after his debate debacle, telling one he was proud to have been “the first Black woman to serve with a Black president,” I knew it spelled trouble. First of all, if any white man could claim to be “the first Black woman” in the Oval, it was Bill Clinton. Black fans called him “the first Black president” and feminist fans called him “the first woman president.”Second of all, we were entering a new post-debate examination period with President Biden, where his every word would be scrutinized. He was always a fast and voluminous talker, and as he has gotten older, the words and ideas sometimes tumble out in the wrong order. Also, he’s more slurry now, so words get smushed together, and words and thoughts collide; words get dropped, caesuras skipped, and sentences sometimes trail off into the ether.

The fallout extends a three-day drop, as worries mount over impending selling pressure in the market. Crypto investors have been feeling a kind of déjà vu with the sluggish price of bitcoin having barely budged for months now. However, data shows demand for the cryptocurrency has slowly been returning and could soon be reflected in prices. The increase in bitcoin price, however, will depend on growing demand for bitcoin, which usually increases before showing up in prices, he added. "This is typically a high growth rate, so we are already in a high demand growth environment. … Last February-March, prices rallied stronger when demand growth surpassed 6% month-over-month growth."

A worsening macroeconomic climate and the collapse of industry giants such as FTX and Terra have weighed on bitcoin's price this year. STR | Nurphoto via Getty ImagesBitcoin's price slumped to around $57,000 apiece Thursday, hitting a two-month low after the U.S. Federal Reserve released minutes from its June meeting indicating the central bank isn't yet ready to cut interest rates. Since then, bitcoin has pared losses somewhat and was trading at $57,932.57, down 3.4% as of 5:05 p.m. London time. Higher interest rates are typically less favorable for bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as it dampens investor risk appetite. ETFs allow investors to buy a product that tracks the price of bitcoin without owning the underlying cryptocurrency.

The Wide, Wide World of Judy Chicago
  + stars: | 2024-07-03 | by ( Emily Labarge | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Like all women and all art, Judy Chicago contains multitudes. Across venues in Britain and France, six decades of Chicago’s distinctly feminist oeuvre show a remarkable range. Minimalist sculptures; psychedelic spray-painted car hoods; landscapes billowing with bright plumes of smoke; and paintings of swirling, hallucinatory flowers fill the galleries with Chicago’s hallmark bright colors and undulating line. Many works incorporate personal texts in tidy, looping cursive about gendered rejection, shame, longing and anger. These works foreground the female nude, its life-giving properties and implicit connection to the natural world.

"Brat," along with viral hits like Sabrina Carpenter's "Espresso" and Tinashe's "Nasty," have ushered in a season of pleasure and levity — what my friends and I have been calling a "smooth brain summer." The primary lure of pop music has always been escapism. Indeed, we've lived in a pop world dominated by Taylor Swift and refashioned in her likeness for several years. These peculiar bops form the perfect foundation for a "smooth brain summer" soundtrack — though please note that doesn't mean they're devoid of value or meaning. An appetite (and a need) still exists for complex metaphors, history lessons, and personal revelations in pop music — but now is not the time.
