DAMASCUS, Syria — Cockroaches crawled out of the walls near a dirty, stained sink in the Syrian prison cell where an ex-prisoner told NBC News that American journalist Austin Tice was once held. Sahar al-Ahmad said he was in the cell across from Tice and last saw him alive in July 2022. Relatives rushed to jails, military installations and even black sites to search for detained loved ones as soon as the regime fell. Ted Turner / NBC NewsAhmad, an activist and citizen journalist, said that he was arrested for filming anti-regime demonstrations and that Tice appeared to be in “somewhat good” condition in 2022. A torn photo of ousted Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad lies on the floor after the prison was hastily evacuated.

Somewhat surprisingly for the first ever COO of Google DeepMind, it’s not even artificial intelligence, nor is it coding. “I became an [electrical] engineer because I thought it was a combination of math, art and science. A Nobel-winning ideaIbrahim’s love of engineering was inspired by her Lebanese father, who was orphaned by the time he was five years old and would grow up to become an electrical engineer. At Google DeepMind, perhaps the most important example is AlphaFold, the company’s AI program capable of solving what it calls the protein prediction problem. The company also made AlphaFold open-source, meaning any researcher anywhere in the world can access it (over 2 million people in 190 countries and counting, according to Google DeepMind).

Hong Kong CNN —A former Chinese soccer star and coach of the country’s national men’s team has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for corruption, state media reported on Friday. Despite leader Xi Jinping’s vision to turn China into a “world soccer superpower,” Chinese professional soccer has been mired with poor financial decision making, deep-rooted corruption and disappointing performance. But after becoming the head coach of a club, he realized it was a shortcut to improve his club’s ranking. Li is considered among the best Chinese players of his generation, and one of the most recognizable names in Chinese soccer. Many Chinese soccer fans had hoped that Li, once the pride of Chinese soccer, could lead the men’s national soccer team into the World Cup when he was appointed the head coach in January 2020.

And nearly a third of all respondents said they were either not too satisfied with their pay (20%) or not at all satisfied (10%). A little respect may go a long wayOne thing that may help explain why the majority of US workers say they feel secure or satisfied in their jobs is that they feel respected. Hispanic and Asian workers now make up a larger share than they did in 2000 (19% today vs. 12% then), while the share of Black workers has remained steady (12% today vs 11% in 2000). How might Trump challenge birthright citizenship? The US has birthright citizenship to guarantee that the descendants of people brought to the US against their will and sold as slaves are citizens. For more on the history of the amendment, read this excellent explainer from CNN’s AJ Willingham, written in 2018, when Trump threatened as president to challenge the concept of birthright citizenship. How Netflix Made Magic Look Real in ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ The series, which will be released this week, adapts the novel for the screen for the first time. The author always refused, insisting that his novel, in which the real and fantastical converge, could never be rendered onscreen. Built by Netflix from the ground up for the first-ever screen adaptation of the novel, the town has real birds nesting in its trees and dogs wandering its narrow streets. To recreate Macondo, Netflix also relied on museums, documents, researchers and historians. Because of the care brought to that effort, the details accumulate to make Macondo seem real, said Enríquez, the production designer.
