Companies Mercedes Benz Group AG FollowBERLIN, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Mercedes-Benz (MBGn.DE) has struck a preliminary agreement with an offshore wind provider to supply electricity equivalent to 25% of its demand in Germany from 2027 onwards, a spokesperson for the carmaker said on Monday. The energy provider, which the spokesperson declined to name, will reserve the energy for Mercedes-Benz from an offshore wind park under construction in the Baltic Sea. The carmaker, which previously said it aims to cover 70% of its energy demand with renewables by 2030, said in April it was sourcing all its electricity for Germany from green sources from 2022 onwards under purchase power agreements with Statkraft and Enovos. It is also planning to build a wind farm in the northwestern German state of Lower Saxony by 2025 that is able to produce a hundred megawatts of electricity, equivalent to over 15% of the carmaker's annual demand in Germany. "The co-operation is part of Rotterdam's ambition to supply Northwest Europe with 4.6 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030," it went on to add. "We are therefore setting up multiple trade lanes for green hydrogen, together with exporting countries and private businesses all over the world," he added. If the electricity used in this process comes from a renewable source such as wind or solar then some call it "green" or "renewable" hydrogen. Tuesday's announcement said Cepsa was aiming to "lead green hydrogen production in Spain and Portugal by 2030 with a production capacity of 2GW." It added that it would develop a 7 GW portfolio of renewable energy projects — including solar and wind — to produce the renewable energy required for green hydrogen generation.
NEW DELHI, Oct 11 (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) on Tuesday unveiled its flex fuel hybrid sedan in India, kicking off a pilot project in a market where the government is pushing automakers to switch to clean fuels. The sedan, built by Toyota's local unit Toyota Kirloskar Motor, will be powered by flex fuel technology, which allows the engine to run on fuel blended with a higher percentage of ethanol, reducing the consumption of gasoline along with a hybrid powertrain. India, which is a major producer of sugar, is keen to boost its usage of ethanol, like bigger producer Brazil where sale of flex fuel vehicles is already popular. The objective of the pilot is to see how the car operates in India and increase awareness of the technology. WASHINGTON, Oct 6 (Reuters) - A production cut by the OPEC+ oil cartel is reigniting U.S. voters' No. The move late in the campaign season unsettled a growing consensus that Biden's Democrats could stem their losses in the U.S. House of Representatives -- though they are still expected to lose their narrow majority. Republicans have hammered Democrats all year over inflation, which has reached four-decade highs as gasoline prices surged with Russia's March invasion of Ukraine. Moscow is also a member of OPEC+ and played a role in the cartel's decision this week to cut output. Forecasters do not expect gasoline prices to surge back to summertime highs.

The UK lifted a temporarily ban on fracking amid the ongoing energy crisis. UK energy bills are expected to be 80% higher in October than they were a year ago. The UK temporarily banned shale gas fracking in 2019 due to concerns about earth tremors from the process, which breaks up rocks with water at chemicals at high pressure in order to extract shale gas. Fracking companies welcomed the lifting of the ban, but some experts raise doubts over the impact of the move on UK consumers and the size of their energy bills. A Thursday report from the London School of Economics said it's a "false assumption" that shale gas produced at home would be priced significantly below international market prices.

Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.) said of the opposition Tuesday in Washington. WASHINGTON—Sen. Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.) said he would soon release the complete details of his permitting bill, designed to speed up energy projects, as he blamed “revenge politics” for opposition to his proposal from liberal Democrats as well as Republicans. “We have to have energy independence,” he said at a press conference, pitching the bill as a balanced way to both boost fossil-fuel and renewable energy production, while helping to rein in inflation. “That’s what I’m all about.”

Hong Kong CNN Business —People around the world are searching for ways to shield themselves from the impact of stubbornly high inflation, and the rich are no exception. Annual inflation in the European Union stands at 9.1%, while the United States’ rate remains at 8.3%. Inflation in the United Kingdom recently hit a 40-year high before abating slightly to 9.9% last month. Matos told CNN Business how Europe’s biggest bank was advising its customers, which include both high-net-worth and retail investors, to play defense. Even as many people sell assets, “you want to keep invested,” said Matos, noting the adverse effects of retaining cash during a high inflation period.

Congress votes this week on the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2022. Will we promote energy security and independence, or will we allow extreme ideologies and politics to embolden our nation’s enemies? Will we allow toxic tribal politics and the Vladimir Putins of the world to dictate our future, or will we protect our nation’s energy security? We are in the midst of a global energy war, and the American people—Republican, Democrat and independent—are paying the price. They aren’t being honest about what’s in the bill and how it came to be.
Workers extracting oil from oil wells in the Permian Basin in Midland, Texas on May 1, 2018. The International Energy Agency (IEA) believes the U.S. is on track to become a sustained net oil exporter in either late 2020 or early 2021, after briefly achieving this "major milestone" earlier in the year. In September, the U.S. exported 89,000 barrels per day (b/d) more petroleum (crude oil and other petroleum products) than it imported, according to official data published earlier this month. "On a historic note, in September, the United States momentarily became a net oil exporter… This is a major milestone on its path to becoming a sustained net exporter, which is likely to be late in 2020 or early in 2021," the IEA said in its closely-watched report published on Friday. "However, this does not mean that energy independence has been achieved: The United States remains a major crude oil importer."
