CNN —Macaulay Culkin’s three-year-old son is having what sounds like an utterly adorable identity crisis. Culkin’s son Dakota, whom he shares with fiancée Brenda Song, has not only seen his dad’s beloved ‘90s holiday classic “Home Alone,” but he thinks he in fact is Culkin’s signature character Kevin McCallister. “He thinks he’s Kevin,” Macaulay told E! At that point, Culkin had no choice but to playfully call out his son, he said, jokingly telling the little one that he’s “a lying liar who lies. “Home Alone” has become synonymous with Christmastime, which Culkin said he resisted at first but is only recently starting to embrace.

Shortly after Nattie Powell’s daughter turned 1 year old, Powell bought her a toddler-sized Christmas tree toy just in time for the 2023 holiday season. Powell, who often records herself DIYing various holiday decor and household objects, thought painting the tree neutral colors would better suit the aesthetic of her living room. But once she posted the updated toy — dark green with brown ornaments — commenters quickly called her out on a “beige mom” activity. It is OK to be a ‘beige mom’Powell’s daughter didn’t seem to care, playing with the toy tree without complaint, she said. “Mothers shouldn’t feel judged or stressed out about if they choose to embrace the ‘beige mom’ trend or not,” said Poon, who is also the chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ section on developmental and behavioral pediatrics.

Responsible AI use creates advantages for employees and employers alike. By measuring the effectiveness of AI tools over time, HR and talent teams can better understand its long-term implications. But the key to success in using those AI tools is recognizing both their utility and their limitations. Causey recommends evaluating potential AI vendors by asking questions about their thoughts on responsible AI and how they comply with AI-specific regulations. Organizations using AI tools should continue to track these traditional indicators, while also looking further out — and consider other measurable areas that may be impacted over time.

President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet selections are a mix of conventional (Senator Marco Rubio and Gov. Doug Burgum) and oddball (Tulsi Gabbard and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.) — reflecting the heterodox coalition that brought him back to power. While never a traditional Republican, Mr. Trump, in a second term, looks likely to go further than in his first in dumping many traditional Republican policies. In particular, Mr. Trump seems willing, even eager, to embrace vice. In his recent campaign, Mr. Trump embraced a strategy of social moderation.

Apple says it uses Amazon's custom AI chips

Apple is currently using Amazon Web Services' custom artificial intelligence chips for services like search and will evaluate if the company's latest AI chip can be used to pre-train its models like Apple Intelligence. Benoit Dupin, Apple's senior director of machine learning and AI, took the stage to discuss how Apple uses the cloud service. Apple uses those cloud services, too. Benoit said that Apple had used AWS for over a decade for services including Siri, Apple Maps and Apple Music. Apple has used Amazon's Trainium and Graviton chips to serve search services, for example, and Benoit said that Amazon's chips had led to a 40% efficiency gain.

Credit and debit card fees were always a big business expense for Patti Riordan, who owns a hobby shop in Lancaster, Ohio. Now, so-called swipe fees are her third biggest expense, behind payroll and rent, amounting to roughly $18,000 a year. “There is no room to pay more — we’re just operating so thin,” Ms. Riordan said. Debit and credit card fees are among the top monthly expenses for many small businesses, which say the costs are becoming more onerous as fewer consumers carry cash. When they swipe a credit card, businesses pay fees to the bank that issues the card, to the payment network and, often, to companies like Toast and Square that help process the transaction.

Opinion | What to Expect in a Second Trump Term
  + stars: | 2024-11-29 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:When Donald Trump retakes the reins of the presidency in January, he will face a choice of which path to take. The first is to use the office as a cudgel, punishing his perceived enemies and rewarding his most ardent supporters, enriching himself and his family in the process. The second path is more challenging, but it’s one that could secure Mr. Trump a vaunted place in history. Imagine a presidency in which he seeks to uplift the most vulnerable and implement programs that benefit all Americans, not just those who voted for him. Admittedly, this approach would require humility and restraint, qualities Mr. Trump is not necessarily known for, but if he did embrace them, he could astonish even his harshest critics and leave a legacy that transcends personal ambition.
