Based on previously published work, we hypothesized that Black patients would receive less multimodal analgesia than White patients, and we found that as well,” Faraday said. Having data on each patient’s self-reported level of pain – and whether there was any difference in the amount of pain among Black and White patients – would have added to the findings, Carrillo said. The researchers also found that, among those with the highest pain scores recorded, Black patients were significantly less likely to receive painkillers than White patients. Research published in 2007 in the Journal of the National Medical Association found that physicians are twice as likely to underestimate pain in Black patients compared with all other ethnicities combined. However, the data showed that White patients were twice as likely to be airlifted compared with Black patients and almost two times more likely compared with Hispanics and other races.

That changed in 2023, when Texas went 12-2 in coach Steve Sarkisian’s third season and appeared in the College Football Playoff for the first time. Like Texas, Georgia spent much of the last 30 years boasting a past national championship and a campus in a recruiting-rich part of the country, with little modern success to show for it. The quarterback of the Bulldogs’ back-to-back championship teams was not a former high-star recruit but he did grow up in Georgia. In the decade before Sarkisian’s hiring, Texas recruiting classes finished with an average rank of 10.8 in the country; in three recruiting classes under Sarkisian, Texas has averaged a ranking of 4.6. In the eyes of Texas fans, the Longhorns won’t qualify as fully back until they win the program’s first football national championship since 2006.

Cleveland led 3-1 in the eighth before Aaron Judge hit a two-run homer off All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase and Giancarlo Stanton followed with a solo drive. The Fry and Noel shots came after Judge and Stanton had connected for their homers, putting the Yankees up 4-3 against Clase. But the Guardians aren’t done, and still have a chance to end the longest World Series drought, stretching to 1948. The 30th postseason matchup between the Guardians and Yankees was another tightly contested matchup between two franchises who know each other well this time of year. Cleveland finally got some length from a starter as Matthew Boyd went five innings, the most Guardians manager Stephen Vogt has permitted this postseason.

Mounting geopolitical tensions and a tight presidential election may intensify market volatility in coming weeks, but high-quality growth stocks may prove a useful way for investors to hedge against any future uncertainty, according to Trivariate Research. LONDON — U.S. pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly is exploring whether obesity drugs could be used to curb joblessness after signing a major investment deal with the U.K. The weight-loss treatment firm and creator of Zepbound announced Monday that it would commit £279 million ($364 million) to help tackle Britain’s significant health challenges — including obesity. Within that, the five-year trial, conducted in collaboration with Health Innovation Manchester, will also explore how weight-loss drugs impact “participants’ employment status and sick days from work,” the company said in a news release. The use cases for obesity drugs have been growing over recent months, with several drug regulators expanding GLP-1 drug labels for use in treating obesity-related comorbidities and other illnesses. The company said it anticipates making an additional £279 million of new investment into the U.K. over the coming years.

This article is part of “Dealing the Dead,” a series investigating the use of unclaimed bodies for medical research. Tarrant County commissioners discussed terminating their agreement with the University of North Texas Health Science Center at a meeting Sept. 17. Shelby Tauber for NBC NewsTarrant County had delegated the work of contacting dead people’s families and cremating their remains to the Health Science Center. The revamped rules give preference to cremating unclaimed bodies, which is cheaper than burial. For years, Shupe urged officials to stop providing unclaimed bodies to the Health Science Center, saying it was immoral to have them dissected and studied without consent.

Almost half of young women have at least a bachelor’s degree compared to 37% of young men. That compares to 2008, when Barack Obama won the votes of 66% of young men. One of the biggest financial pressure points for young men has been higher rents, which are up around 20% since 2020. Young men are more likely to be financially dependent on their parents compared to young women, with 74% of women describing themselves as mostly financially independent compared to 62% of young men, according to a Pew survey. I think Trump will do better with young men than among young women — the gap will be pretty significant in terms of voter support — but I don’t think Trump’s going to win an overwhelming majority.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday agreed to reconsider a decision it made last month to bar drug compounders from selling their own versions of Eli Lilly's blockbuster weight loss and diabetes drugs. The compounding versions of the drugs are cheaper for patients than the brand-name versions. The Sept. 30 decision by the FDA endangered the ability of compounders to sell versions of Lilly's weight loss drug Zepbound and diabetes drug Mounjaro. The FDA decision removed their active ingredient, tirzepatide, from its list of drugs experiencing shortages. Insurers generally cover drugs like tirzepatide for diabetes, but many do not cover them for weight loss.
