Two recently established political committees appear to violate FEC regulations. McMaster at the Richmond Forum in Virginia, a man says he found himself so inspired that he formed a political committee to support McMaster for president in 2024. Federal regulations generally prohibit committees from using the name of a prospective candidate in their committee's name. Then, two days after the McMaster filing, another man filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission to form a committee with completely different — and hostile — intentions. As for Liu's antisemitic committee name, the FEC has a process for dealing with that — but it's a protracted one.
The only problem was the company wasn’t accurately verifying the people behind the accounts or ensuring that verified accounts hadn’t changed their names. Many people appeared to be creating obviously fake accounts to make fun of Musk and make a point about why Twitter Blue’s new system wouldn’t work. With Musk at the helm of the social media platform, it’s certainly possible for the subscription-based Twitter Blue to come back just as flawed. Given Musk’s flip-flopping nature so far, it’s safe to assume that the dangers that can come from verified spoof accounts on Twitter are still present. Not only have many verified accounts impersonated other people, but disinformation may be worsening.

Sen. Ed Markey said his account was "easily" impersonated with a fake account with a blue verification check. Musk responded to the complaint, saying Markey's real account "sounds like a parody." Musk laid off about half of Twitter's staff, including public policy staff who verify politician accounts. Musk responded on Twitter by saying the senator's real account "sounds like a parody." And you're spending your time picking fights online," Markey tweeted.
Sen. Ed Markey chastised Twitter's owner Elon Musk Sunday for his response to Markey's request for answers about the platform's new verification and impersonation policies. In response, Musk wrote back to Markey in a tweet Sunday and said, "Perhaps it is because your real account sounds like a parody?" Or Congress will," Markey wrote in a tweet Sunday. The account received a blue verified checkmark, even though Markey already has two legitimate verified accounts. The exchange between Musk and Markey on Twitter is not the first time the pair has gone head-to-head.
Sen. Ed Markey demanded answers from Twitter owner Elon Musk about its new verification and impersonation policies Friday after a Washington Post reporter successfully set up a fake verified account pretending to be the Massachusetts Democrat. Twitter appeared to have paused the $7.99/month Twitter Blue verification program shortly after the Post ran its test as impersonations of celebrities and brands proliferated across the platform. The account received a blue verified checkmark, even though Markey already has two legitimate verified accounts. Even though the blue check is supposed to be a feature of the paid Twitter Blue, the Post reporter found that Twitter said the fake Markey account was verified "because it's notable in government, news, entertainment, or another designated category." "Safeguards such as Twitter's blue checkmark once allowed users to be smart, critical consumers of news and information in Twitter's global town square," Markey wrote in his letter to Musk.
Clocks in the United States will return to standard time at 2 a.m. EDT on Sunday with no consensus on the matter. The current system of daylight saving is good for business, energy efficiency, and the prevention of vehicle accidents." There's some strong science behind it that is now showing and making people aware of the harm that clock switching has. Congress created Daylight Saving decades ago as a wartime effort, now it is well past time to lock the clock and end this experiment." Permanent, year-round Standard Time is the best match for our biological sleep-wake cycle."
Migrants gather after being flown in from Texas on a flight funded by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis at Edgartown, Massachusetts, September 15, 2022. Treasury's Office of Inspector General is investigating whether Florida improperly used pandemic relief funds to fly Venezuelan migrants to the haughty resort island of Martha's Vineyard. They said the Florida Republican's $12 million relocation program is funded in part by interest earned off of the aid. Treasury's Deputy Inspector General, Richard Delmar, told the state Democratic members his office has already asked Florida for information about the state's use of that money. "I applaud the swift response from the Treasury's Office of the Inspector General," he said.
An internal government watchdog is looking into whether Florida misused federal funds to pay for migrant flights to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, last month under a program backed by Gov. Delmar also said the inspector general’s office would review what restrictions are in place for using the money, including interest earned, for immigration-related activities. Markey, who was among the group that signed on to the Sept. 16 letter demanding a probe, applauded the inspector general in a statement Wednesday. DeSantis has insisted that no laws were broken and pledged to continue his administration’s $12 million program to relocate migrants. "Reviews by Treasury are typical and, as stated by the OIG, are ‘part of its oversight responsibilities.’”NBC News has asked the Treasury Department for comment.
WASHINGTON, Oct 12 (Reuters) - The U.S. Treasury is investigating whether Florida Governor Ron DeSantis improperly used federal funds to pay for flights transporting migrants from Texas to Massachusetts, the department confirmed in a letter to U.S. lawmakers on Wednesday. Democratic Senator Ed Markey and other federal lawmakers from Massachusetts sent a letter to the Treasury shortly after the flights, asking it to examine whether DeSantis used interest from federal COVID-19 loans to pay for the flights. Investigators will rule on whether Florida used interest from the fund for the flights and whether this is permitted, Delmar said, adding they "will get this work underway as quickly as possible." A Texas county sheriff last month opened a criminal investigation into the flights. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a California Democrat, told young climate activists in 2019, "You didn't vote for me." AP Photo/Gemunu AmarasingheBut most policy debates aren't genuinely existential in the way climate change is. "Younger Democrats tend to have a much more friendly relationship and response to the party's activist class than older Democrats do." Fossil-fuel interests have played a central role in stymieing progress on climate change for decades. Nearly a decade later, Trump ran for and won the presidency — with Gingrich's early and staunch support — while calling climate change a "hoax."
More youthful representation would better serve the country, young members of Congress say. But members of Congress, political scientists, and strategists generally don't blame age for these downfalls — leaders both young and old are prone to controversy. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made history in 2019 as the youngest woman ever elected to Congress, at 29. "I was always accustomed to being the youngest," Schatz told Insider at the Capitol. The nation needs "more principled members of Congress," Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado, 35, told Insider, adding: "It doesn't matter their age."
JetBlue Airways finally won over Spirit Airlines with a $3.8 billion takeover deal . JetBlue Airlines and Spirit Airlines are seen on the departure board in the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on May 16, 2022 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. President Joe Biden's Justice Department has vowed to challenge out any deals that could harm competition. The Justice Department didn't immediately respond to a request for comment but the agency's antitrust chief, Jonathan Kanter, has promised a hard stance against anti-competition. Without that, "there would be a public perception that [the Justice Department] just caved," he said.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren took to Twitter Thursday to call for "uniform standards" for device chargers. Ed Markey and Bernie Sanders joined Warren in a letter to Department of Commerce on the issue. The EU has already approved a plan for mobile devices to be compatible with USB-C charger. In a tweet posted Thursday, Warren wrote that potential legislation to streamline chargers would create "less expense, less hassle, and less waste." The letter also highlights that chargers account for 11,000 tons of e-waste annually.
