CNBC's Jim Cramer explained that last week's debt ceiling resolution may have paved the way for a Dow resurgence, even though the index closed lower by about 200 points Monday. "With the default fears off the table, maybe this is a market where the once mighty Dow can actually lead again," Cramer said. In looking at a more Dow-focused market, Cramer highlighted several stocks that roared on Friday, including technology company 3M and construction manufacturer Caterpillar . Cramer believes Caterpillar is largely misunderstood by Wall Street, and traders treat it as an old-fashioned cyclical stock. To Cramer, however, Caterpillar was successfully diversified by CEO Jim Umpleby into a business less reliant on the global economy.

A prominent Russian senator with close ties to Putin is increasingly criticizing the war in Ukraine. Sen. Lyudmila Narusova, whose late husband was a mentor to Putin, has been a skeptic of the war since the start. "Nobody has explained how victory is supposed to look," Narusova told an interviewer with Forbes Russia in an April video, according to a translation in The Washington Post. "I think they themselves do not know what they are doing," Narusova told the independent Dozhd channel in February 2022, per The Times. His widow's public defiance is a sign of the worry growing among top Russian officials ahead of Ukraine's much-anticipated counteroffensive.
While the Dow Jones Industrial Average 's year-to-date move into the red on Thursday may signal more choppy, range-bound trading ahead, technical analysts say they don't think it's an omen for new multi-year lows. Chart experts say the closely followed blue-chip Dow Jones average could test long-term moving averages. .DJI YTD mountain The Dow Failing to hold above its 200-day moving average of 32,707 could mean more downside ahead for the 30-stock average, said JC O'Hara, chief technical strategist at Roth MKM. UnitedHealth has by far the biggest weighting in the Dow Jones Industrial Average . The 126-year-old blue-chip benchmark is price-weighted, meaning stocks with higher share prices are given the most weight. The health-care stock closed Wednesday at $520.97, while the stock with the second-highest impact on the 30-stock Dow, Goldman Sachs , stood at $327.37, nearly $200 less than UnitedHealth. The insurer is so large, with a $486 billion market cap, it ranks as the ninth-biggest company in the S & P 500.
The good news: Banks were willing to go to the Fed for help, and the central bank was willing and able to comply. Programs such as the BTFP can have that stigma, too, but in this case the Fed made its conditions a bit easier than the discount window. The BTFP also pays par value on securities offered in exchange for cash, while the discount window uses market value. "The discount window takes everything. "We have seen the largest uptake of the discount window in history.

"The return on being patient is huge with Social Security," Kotlikoff said. Why it pays to wait to claim Social SecurityEligibility for Social Security retirement benefits starts at age 62 for workers who have earned 40 credits, or 10 years of qualifying work. Those contributions count toward the Social Security retirement benefits workers may claim later in life. For each year delayed past full retirement age, 8% is added to Social Security benefits. The return for waiting to claim Social Security benefits may also beat stock market returns, which are highly risky, Kotlikoff noted.

Jan 26 (Reuters) - Dow Inc (DOW.N) on Thursday forecast current-quarter revenue below estimates and said it would cut about 2,000 jobs as the chemical giant navigates challenges including inflation and supply chain disruptions. The company expects the recent shifts in China's COVID policy to stimulate demand, but that would take some time to take effect. "Chemical prices are likely to go up in the first quarter (2023) and we will see better demand in the second quarter," said Aleksey Yefremov, analyst at KeyBanc Capital Markets. It expects 2023 capital expenditure be $2.2 billion, about 21% higher than last year.
