"Everybody hates multi-factor authentication," cybersecurity expert and former government hacker Kyle Hanslovan tells CNBC Make It. Microsoft has claimed that multi-factor authentication can prevent 99.9% of cyberattacks on personal accounts. Fewer than half of U.S. small business-owners require employees and customers to use multi-factor authentication, according to the Cyber Readiness Institute. They're more likely to choose the path of least resistance whenever they come across an obstacle, like an extra step for authentication, Hanslovan says. "If you [use multi-factor authentication] and choose that app, you're almost ahead of most of the pack and attackers will move to somebody who's the slowest one."

Even as Airbnb's popularity and private valuation soared throughout the 2010s, Chesky didn't feel successful, he said — and he thought taking the company public would help. The Airbnb CEO originally moved to Silicon Valley and started his company in 2008 with co-founders Joe Gebbia and Nathan Blecharczyk. In response, Chesky dedicated all his energy to making Airbnb more successful, hoping it'd fulfill him, he said. The ongoing research, which started in 1938, has found that career and financial success don't make participants feel more content. Six months later, the company launched its Airbnb Rooms service, which allows hosts to rent out individual bedrooms in their homes.

For the next two weeks, the popular streaming service is offering three months of its ad-supported tier for $1.99 per month. The "Blockbuster September" promotion is available from Sept. 6 until Sept. 20, and can be secured by new and returning subscribers. The timing of the promotion coincides with the streaming release of Disney's "The Little Mermaid" remake, as well as the upcoming streaming release of Pixar's "Elemental" on Sept. 13. Disney CEO Bob Iger announced last month that Disney+ would be raising its prices in October. The company also introduced a Disney+ and Hulu combo bundle for $19.99 per month, while leaving the $9.99 per month price of its existing Disney+ and Hulu bundle with ads untouched.

The timing was poor for bootstrapping: Winer and Mecray had just shuttered their first startup attempt, a juice presser company called Juicepresso. They maxed out credit cards, took out a small-business loan from American Express and packaged cookware sets in their backyards. It's grown steadily since, bringing in $170.7 million in revenue last year, according to documents reviewed by CNBC Make It. At its height in 2015, we brought in somewhere between $5 million and $6 million in revenue. To be honest, though, as soon as I started working on the pan, I knew it wasn't going to fail.

The companies now have six months to start complying with the Digital Markets Act's requirements, which are spurring changes in how Big Tech companies operate. “So that’s the endgame.”For example, under the DMA tech companies can't stop consumers from connecting with businesses outside their platforms. That means Telegram or Signal users could exchange texts or video files with WhatsApp users. That means Meta can't mix together a user's data from Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp services without clear consent. Google noted that it's already doing this and said it would remind European users of their choices.

Some 3.6 million salaried workers may soon be able to earn overtime pay, according to a new proposal from the Biden administration. Currently, overtime pay applies primarily to hourly workers who log more than 40 hours in one week. The new proposal raises that threshold so non-hourly professionals can earn overtime if they earn less than $55,068 per year, or $1,059 per week. Roughly 15% of salaried workers are now entitled to overtime pay, the AP reports citing data from the Economic Policy Institute. If the new rule passes, nearly 30% of salaried workers would become eligible for overtime, though that's far lower than the 60% of salaried workers who were entitled to overtime pay in the 1970s, per the EPI.

Bill Gates has spent years, and billions of dollars, working to combat climate change. But, according to Gates, most people are still unaware of the role played by one of the biggest contributors to climate change: agriculture, specifically methane emissions from livestock and fertilizers. While plant-based foods have won support from those looking for alternatives to products made from animals, Gates said that he started backing plant-based food ventures because of their potential to combat climate change. In his 2021 book, "How to Avoid a Climate Disaster," Gates wrote that effectively combating climate change will take people being willing to commit to new ideas, like switching to electric cars and synthetic meats. Speaking to Thompson about the plant-based meat startups, like Impossible, Gates said that "they're doing well, but a lot of people want him to make [the product] even slightly better."

The platform, which Schwartz describes as "Etsy for software products," currently brings in roughly $354,000 per month, according to a CNBC Make It estimate. "You want to really orient yourself around a real problem that needs to be solved," Schwartz, 25, tells Make It. During high school, he and Zoub built sneaker bots, or pieces of software that nabbed limited-edition shoes faster than people who manually clicked "buy now." The company clearly solved a problem, but the co-founders didn't find the work creatively fulfilling. It solved a safety problem: Zoub patrolled online forums where people sold software, and found them rife with scammers and rip-off artists.

Amazon One is a type of biometric-based form of payment which uses your unique physical features, such as your face or palm print, to authorize payments. This means customers who sign up for the Amazon One program won't need their wallets or phones to pay for groceries. To its credit, Amazon says its palm scanners use liveness-detection technology and are able to tell the difference between a live palm and a fake one. Consumers should also be aware that the database where their biometric data is stored could potentially be hacked. It's important to understand that your biometric information is some of the most sensitive data you create, says Greer.

Some 66% of U.S. workers say companies should adopt extended vacation policies, like a month off in August, in their workplaces, according to a Morning Consult survey of 1,047 U.S. adults. Several countries offer even more by law before paid public holidays come into play, which can add up to more than a month of business days in vacation time per year. But not all U.S. workers say they'd welcome longer vacation policies: 21% of Americans say companies should not adopt extended PTO policies in their workplace, while the remaining respondents say they don't know or don't have an opinion. The survey didn't specifically address the concerns of those against extended time off work, says Ellyn Briggs, brands analyst at Morning Consult. Alexa von Tobel learned at Harvard University that money doesn't buy happiness. But despite her own financial success, von Tobel, 39, says she's derived the most happiness throughout her career from "the intangibles that money can't buy." "Through my time at Harvard's Happiness Lab during my undergrad years, I really gained a new perspective on what drives happiness," von Tobel tells CNBC Make It, adding: "What actually drives happiness are the simple routines and the daily rituals in our lives that create community and connectedness." In college, von Tobel earned Magna Cum Laude honors for a senior thesis on happiness in the small country of Bhutan, according to her LinkedIn profile. Global experiments to test a four-day workweek have gotten workers, and their bosses, onboard with the idea. It's worth noting the Morning Consult survey defined a four-day workweek as working four days a week for 10-plus hours a day. There are surprising generational differences at play: 93% of millennials and 88% of Gen Xers lead the way in being interested in a shorter workweek. Baby boomers, meanwhile, show the least amount of interest (72%) in a shorter week. Workers say they most want the benefit to improve their commute, work-life balance and to avoid discomfort working in an office.

Tell Frontier Airlines how much you owe in student loans and you could be one of 100 lucky winners who will receive an airline mile for every dollar you owe, up to 100,000 miles, the airline announced last week. Student loan borrowers have until August 27 to enter the sweepstakes through Frontier's website. To enter, all you need is a student debt balance and a free Frontier Miles account. It's not as exciting as having your student loan balance forgiven, but the maximum prize of 100,000 miles could help you save on a budget getaway. The contest comes just as federal student loan borrowers gear up to begin making payments on their loans again for the first time in over three years.
