In September 1989, the owners of the Good ‘n Loud Music store in Madison, Wis., made a grisly discovery: a human skull seen through a pipe connecting the boiler to the chimney. Further investigation uncovered a full skeleton with a faded, paisley dress and pointed heels. For years, the unidentified bones were locked in a cabinet in the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office, which estimated that the remains had been in the chimney for anywhere from two months to two years. An autopsy determined that the skeleton belonged to a thin man, who was 5 feet 7 inches tall and between 18 and 35 years old. For decades, he came to be known as Dane County Doe, or Chimney Doe, featured in television programs about cold cases and unsolved mysteries with a sculpted reconstruction of his face.

CNN —More than 20 years after a mother found a human jawbone hidden in her son’s rock collection, genetic genealogy experts have unraveled the discovery and identified the partial remains of a US Marine Corps captain. In 2002, his mother found the collection, came across what looked to be human remains and contacted the sheriff’s office, authorities said in a statement. In January 2023, the sheriff’s office and the Yavapai County Medical Examiner referred the case to the Investigative Genetic Genealogy Center. The court of appeals upheld a trial court decision in the Friday order, ruling in favor of LGBTQ+ advocates and families in two related Texas lawsuits asking a state court to block the agency from investigating parents who provide their children with gender-affirming care. Paxton appealed the district court injunction in March and declared investigations could continue during the appeal process under the law. The court, in its opinion, also affirmed Paxton’s opinion does not alter preexisting law or legal obligations of the department. Abbott’s directive to the agency was seen by many as an attack on transgender children and their families.

Federal agents on Monday raided homes owned by hip-hop mogul Sean Combs in Los Angeles and Miami, NBC News reported, citing sources. The Department of Homeland Security agents were authorized to search the properties by warrants issued in Manhattan federal court, months after a series of lawsuit accused Combs of serious sexual misconduct, law enforcement sources said. Benjamin Brafman, a New York attorney who has represented Combs, did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment. "We will always support law enforcement when it seeks to prosecute those that have violated the law," Wigdor said in a statement. Combs was sued in Manhattan federal court by Ventura, who is known as Cassie.

Trillions of tons of lightweight, energy-dense hydrogen gas may be hidden deep underground. Those natural reservoirs, known as geologic hydrogen, could be a fruitful carbon-free fuel source. Oil and gas giants BP and Chevron have joined a consortium to study geologic hydrogen. That's when an oil and gas company assessed a mine that had exploded in Mali and found it was full of hydrogen gas. In the US, two long stretches of this rock are a promising place to look for hydrogen reserves, and efforts are already underway.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — A conservative group has told a Georgia judge that it doesn't have evidence to support its claims of illegal ballot stuffing during the the 2020 general election and a runoff two months later. In their written response, attorneys for True the Vote said the group had no names or other documentary evidence to share. The election board subpoenaed True the Vote to provide evidence that would assist it in investigating the group's ballot trafficking allegations. She and another member of the group were briefly jailed in 2022 for contempt for not complying with a court order to provide information in a defamation lawsuit. In addition to names, the judge ordered True the Vote to provide copies of any confidentiality agreements it had with sources.

How cuteness has taken over our world — and why — is a subject being explored in “Cute,” a new (and the first ever) exhibition devoted to the movement at London’s Somerset House. The Industrial Revolution and the rise of mass production allowed cuteness to be unleashed on the world — toys, books and illustrations could, increasingly, be made easily and cheaply. The exhibition — a world first — examines the enduring appeal of the cute aesthetic amongst adults and asks deeper questions about its allure. For Simon May, a professor of philosophy at King’s College London and author of “The Power of Cute,” kawaii is just part of a story which involves the country of Japan more broadly. The Edwardian artist is credited with increasing the cute appeal of our feline friends by giving them human hobbies and pastimes.
