The latest global market volatility has reinforced China's status as a distinct market, even if its growth has slowed recently. While U.S. tech stocks plunged and Japanese stocks swung wildly in a historic two days of price action , Chinese stocks suffered less . The investors remained net buyers of Chinese stocks for the third quarter so far as of Aug. 6, the data showed. Finally, the low correlation of the China stock market with the U.S. stock market could provide investors with diversification benefits." Chinese stocks, especially those traded on the mainland, have historically been less correlated to global market moves due to Beijing's capital controls and other restrictions.

Opinion | How to Save Disney
  + stars: | 2024-08-09 | by ( Ross Douthat | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
In the feast-or-famine landscape of contemporary cinematic box office, Disney is gorging itself at the high table once again. There are the recent stumbles into culture-war controversy and a related impulse to blame the fans when self-consciously diverse content disappoints commercially. There’s the stagnant stock price, the big layoffs last year and the smaller ones this year. But really, the problems can be summed up in a single sentence: The old stuff still sells, but nobody likes the new stuff. But when it comes to new content and new storytelling, the Mouse is struggling to connect.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has argued that AI models should eventually produce synthetic data good enough to train themselves effectively. As the well of usable human-generated data dries up, more companies look into using synthetic data. Rather than being pulled from the real world, synthetic data is generated by AI systems that have been trained on real-world data. Synthetic data may help offer some effective "countertuning" to the biases produced by real-world data, too. 'Habsburg AI'While the AI industry found some advantages in synthetic data, it faces serious issues it can't afford to ignore, such as fears synthetic data can wreck AI models.

My first job out of university was at a tech PR firm. I've always liked wearing different hats, and these threads led me to join Playfair, a generalist VC fund. I was so surprised at how relevant my PR experience wasI was so surprised at how relevant my PR experience was because so much of VC is investor relations. If your background is generalist and diverse, that kind of VC fund would likely suit you. But if you started your career with a technical background, you'd perhaps be suited to a deep tech fund.

On Friday, breaking makes its Olympics debut at the Place de la Concorde in Paris. This form of dance, created by Black youths in the Bronx in the early 1970s, has traveled far from its birthplace. Support for hip-hop education in the States typically comes from nonprofit organizations, after-school programs and for-profit dance schools. Despite breaking’s American roots, it has never been institutionally supported in public schools as part of a coordinated national policy. The Lycée Turgot, a public high school housed in a majestic 19th-century building, has for the past seven years been home to France’s premier national hip-hop dance program.

However, when we relocated to the UK, as an educator myself, I knew that I wanted an International Baccalaureate (IB) education for all of my children moving forward. Our twins, both now 18, have just completed their final year of the IB program and will attend university. In those middle years at school, children are supposed to be focussing on learning and developing key skills. The IB has prepared my children better for universityWhile my older twins have found the IB challenging, the program has also nurtured their passion for learning, encouraging their intellectual curiosity. This is because an IB school gets students involved in group projects, independent research, and advanced writing assignments throughout their education.

Michael Bloomberg’s organization Bloomberg Philanthropies is announcing a $600 million gift to the endowments of four historically Black medical schools. Xavier University of Louisiana, which is opening a new medical school, will also receive a $5 million grant. The donations will more than double the size of three of the medical schools’ endowments, Bloomberg Philanthropies said. The four historically Black medical schools are still deciding with Bloomberg Philanthropies how the latest gifts to their endowments will be used, said Garnesha Ezediaro, who leads Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Greenwood Initiative. Dr. Yolanda Lawson, president of the National Medical Association, said she felt “relief,” when she heard about the gifts to the four medical schools.

The Biden administration said on Tuesday that it would award up to $450 million in grants to a South Korean chipmaker, SK Hynix, to help build its new chip facility in Indiana, in what officials described as a milestone in rebuilding the U.S. semiconductor manufacturing industry. With the announcement, the United States now has commitments from all five of the world’s leading-edge semiconductor manufacturers to construct chip plants in the United States with financial assistance from the administration, Commerce Secretary Gina M. Raimondo said in a call with reporters on Monday. The Biden administration previously announced that it had reached agreements with Intel, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, Samsung and Micron to help fund investments in the United States. “These are the only companies in the world capable of producing leading-edge chips at scale,” she said. SK Hynix announced in April that it had committed to investing $3.87 billion in a facility in West Lafayette, Ind.

SYDNEY — Australia on Monday raised its terror threat level to “probable” from “possible,” citing an increase in extremist views in the country leading to a more than 50% chance of the planning of an onshore attack in the next 12 months. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he had raised the country’s threat level following advice from security services, but said there was no imminent threat of an attack. Australia lowered the threat level to “possible” in 2022, following eight years at “probable.”Mike Burgess, director general of the Australian Security Intelligence Organization, the country’s main intelligence agency, said tensions in the Middle East, including a conflict between Israel and Hamas that began on Oct. 7, were a contributing factor to raising the threat level. Australia has seen several violent attacks in recent months, some of which have been designated as motivated by extremism. In April, Australian police said a knife attack on an Assyrian church bishop and some of his followers in Sydney was a terrorist act motivated by suspected religious extremism.

Eugenicists used photographs and IQ tests to determine which people were "inferior," and sterilized those who didn't measure up — which usually turned out to be anyone who wasn't white and rich. Before he worked with photographs, Kosinski was interested in Facebook. It's just picking up on the way gay people present themselves on dating sites — which, not surprisingly, is often very different from the way straight people present themselves to potential partners. Kosinski thinks AI's ability to make the kind of personality judgments he studies will only get better. That is the future Kosinski fears — even as he continues to tinker with the very models that prove it will come to pass.

Pitching the C-390 in the USA C-390 aircraft flies during an air show. Pete Syme/Business InsiderWhile there haven't been any public negotiations by the Pentagon to add any C-390s to its fleet, Embraer has made moves to pitch the plane to the US market. In an inaugural visit earlier this year, the Brazilian defense firm showcased the C-390 at its facilities in Melbourne, Florida, to "an important and diverse audience," the company said in a March statement. According to a press release, the event hosted a "diverse guest list of government authorities, military officials, prospects, and partners" and featured the A-29 Super Tucano, a turboprop light attack aircraft flown by some South American militaries. The Embraer president da Costa Jr. said the A-29 was built "just hours away in Jacksonville, Florida," hinting that the C-390 could be manufactured in the US as well — a common requirement for foreign aircraft operated by the US military.

Officials quickly moved to tailor the Chicago convention to Harris with only four weeks, in part drawing from the 2008 convention when Barack Obama accepted the nomination given the historic candidacy of Harris herself. After all, the last time a guy named Shapiro had been elected governor of Pennsylvania, he had years earlier anglicized his name to Shapp. “I’m not aware of how his position on Israel differs from the other potential vice presidents,” Hawaii Sen.
