CNN —A floating barrier installed by China to prevent Filipino boats from fishing in a disputed area of the South China Sea has been removed, Philippine authorities said Monday, in the latest flashpoint between Manila and Beijing over their competing maritime claims. The video is a vivid illustration of a fraught power struggle that has been playing out for years in the South China Sea as Manila tries to push back against increasingly assertive claims to the disputed strategic waterway by Beijing. “The barrier posed a hazard to navigation, a clear violation of international law,” the Philippine Coast Guard said in a statement Monday, adding that it also infringed on Philippine sovereignty. Beijing claims “indisputable sovereignty” over almost all of the 1.3 million square miles of the South China Sea, as well as most of the islands and sandbars within it, including many features that are hundreds of miles away from China’s mainland. In 2016, an international tribunal in The Hague ruled in favor of the Philippines in a landmark maritime dispute, which concluded that China has no legal basis to claim historic rights to the bulk of the South China Sea.

But the challenge facing Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee in Georgia is unlike any of the others. The Coast Guard released video of a diver cutting through the ropes that kept the barriers in place at the Scarborough Shoal, which is claimed by both the Philippines and China. “The barrier posed a hazard to navigation, a clear violation of international law,” the Philippines said in a statement. “It also hinders the conduct of fishing and livelihood activities of Filipino fisherfolk.”With tensions already rising in the South China Sea, it was unclear how Beijing might respond. Divers captured rare footage of a gruesome killer whale hunting technique. An orca off the coast of California was seen "slurping" the liver of a live shark. The gruesome footage shows an orca tearing into the stomach of a 30-foot-long whale shark before removing its liver. "Looks like they slurped in the liver and then the whale shark just fell and descended down, with no movement — I'm assuming it was dead," he said. Shortly after the encounter, another orca killed another whale shark nearby.

Filed: July 26, 2023, 10 a.m. GMTJust off the coast of Kiel in northern Germany, scuba divers use hand trowels to dig up emerald green seagrass shoots complete with roots from a dense underwater meadow, delicately shaking off the sediment before placing them in yellow bags. Back on land, they store the shoots in large cooling boxes, before heading out the next day to a barren area further north to replant them in circles. One diver holds a line, and the other uses it to navigate the murky waters and swim around him. They hope this painstaking work, part of a new project that trains local citizens to restore seagrass meadows in the Baltic Sea, can help tackle climate change.

"You don't just jump; you fly," he told Reuters after winning first place in the bridge-diving competition, an annual event held for the past 73 years and drawing both amateurs and professionals. "The beauty of this sport lies in conquering that fear and taking the leap." Krnic was also the winner last year in the Bosnian town of Mostar where he jumped 22 meters from an old bridge into the river below.

Elevated stock market valuations suggest that returns for investors over the next decade could be meager, according to a Bernstein analysis. The Shiller PE or CAPE — that is, cyclically adjusted price to earnings ratio — sets the market multiple based on average inflation-adjusted earnings over the course of a decade. "The Shiller PE has historically been a good predictor of very long-run 10-year forward equity returns," the Bernstein analysts wrote. However, the firm notes that investors shouldn't forego stock market exposure even if returns are likely to be lower. Ed Yardeni of Yardeni Research said market valuations could be resetting as Big Tech companies powered by artificial intelligence dominate the market.
