XOM is within 7% of its 52-week high of $123.75 from April 12, which also is its all-time high. However, that same volatile trading range since April has become part of a much larger potential bullish pattern — which is best seen on this weekly chart. The area shaded in yellow is the same bullish pattern highlighted above. In other words, a breakout to new highs now finally would help extend the 14-year bullish pattern breakout (2008-2022). The best-case scenario, then, would be seeing XOM breakout on both an absolute and relative basis.

Amazon is a buy ahead of its annual Prime Day starting Tuesday — even as the stock has rallied hard this year. One potential catalyst for the stock is Amazon's annual Prime Day event and its ripple effects. JPMorgan, for one, said Prime Day will help Amazon "rationalize inventory levels" ahead of higher consumer demand in the second half of the year. They also said Prime Day should be a driver for Amazon's advertising business, particularly on Amazon Prime Video ad spend. Don't expect the mammoth returns of the S&P 500 to continue this year, according to Goldman Sachs Asset Management's midyear investment outlook released last week. For passive investors, it's the best of times: They're seeing new highs on the two major cap-weighted indexes — S & P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite — with low volatility. Citi has identified several undervalued global stocks exposed to artificial intelligence that present substantial investment opportunities. AI has driven approximately half the 11% return in the MSCI All Country World Index so far, according to Citi. The picture resembles the S & P 500 , where mega-cap stocks focused on AI have driven much of the rally. While many AI stocks have benefited from both expanding multiples and upward earnings revisions, Citi has identified a subset of 19 stocks that buck this trend. This dual tailwind of improving valuations and fundamentals has not been present in stocks with medium or low AI exposure — such as those in the table above.

This week, the 28-year-old venture capital firm debuted a new pair of funds totaling $2.3 billion, a substantial sum during an abysmal time for the industry's fundraising efforts. The European-born firm is structured in a way that investors across continents invest out of the same funds. The new funds include $800 million to invest at the early stage and $1.5 billion to invest in growth. Those figures are slightly down from the firm's last fundraise, when it collected $900 million for an early-stage fund and $2 billion for a growth fund. That year, Index saw seven portfolio companies go public at a market cap of more than $1 billion, including Roblox and Robinhood.

The S & P 500 and Nasdaq Composite closed at all-time highs on Monday, adding to strong gains in the first half of the year. The tech-heavy Nasdaq ended the first half up 18.1%, while the S & P rose 14.5% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 3.8%. In a year when the S & P 500 is touting a 15.5% advance, small-cap stocks look underwhelming – but investors shouldn't shy away from them, said Julie Biel, chief market strategist at Kayne Anderson Rudnick. "I don't think you want to avoid them — they're part of a balanced diet," said Biel, who is also a portfolio manager at the firm. The benchmark small-cap index Russell 2000 is up roughly 1% year to date, whereas the S & P 500 has rallied almost 16%, largely thanks to the strength of Nvidia and other megacap tech stocks. The S & P 400 mid-cap index has also fallen short of its large-cap counterpart, up a modest 5% in 2024. Biel herself manages a small- and mid-cap growth portfolio and takes a long-term investment approach.

One fund has a formula that has enabled it to consistently beat the S & P 500 : the Hennessy Cornerstone Growth Fund.
