LONDON (Reuters) - Health and tobacco campaigners said on Monday that New Zealand's plan to repeal laws that would ban tobacco sales for future generations threatened lives and put international efforts to curb smoking at risk. A ban on smoking for future generations was subsequently proposed in the United Kingdom, with other countries also considering similar rules. "This is major loss for public health, and a huge win for the tobacco industry – whose profits will be boosted at the expense of Kiwi lives," said Boyd Swinburn, co-chair of Health Coalition Aotearoa in New Zealand. The strike lasted more than six weeks before the union won contracts it was seeking from all three unionized US automakers. The unions won significant pay increases and job protections they were seeking. And even with some of the contracts that pass, some union members offer significant opposition, believing they could have negotiated for even more. Ivanka Trump asked a New York appeals court to pause the $250 million fraud trial of her family and its business empire as she appeals a judge's order requiring her to testify in the case next week. New York Attorney General Letitia James urged the appeals court to reject that request, calling it a "drastic" and baseless move that "would upend an ongoing trial." Ivanka Trump was originally listed as a co-defendant as well, but she was removed earlier this year on statute of limitations grounds by a New York appeals court earlier. In Thursday's filing to the appeals court, Ivanka's attorney argued that she is "beyond the jurisdiction" of Engoron's court and that the judge made "multiple errors" when he declined to quash subpoenas for her testimony. Ivanka Trump "has firsthand knowledge of issues that are central to the ongoing trial," James wrote.

Series I bonds are now paying 5.27% annual interest through April 2024, up from the 4.3% yearly rate offered since May — and experts have tips for short- and long-term investors. While the new rate is down significantly from the record 9.62% offered in May 2022, investors can now lock in a fixed rate of 1.3%, up from 0.9%, for I bonds purchased from May 1 through Oct. 31. The new fixed rate is the highest since 2007. While the variable rate changes every six months based on inflation, the Treasury may also adjust the fixed rate or keep it the same. The fixed rate stays the same after purchase and the variable rate resets every six months starting on your original purchase date.

Treasury yields fell after the announcement on relief the increases were not as large as some had feared. The Treasury said on Wednesday it plans to increase the size of its two-year and five-year note auctions by $3 billion per month, and to increase the size of its 3-year and 7-year note auctions by $2 billion and $1 billion per month, respectively. The government will also increase the size of its two-year floating rate note new issue and reopenings by $2 billion. Some Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) auction sizes will also be increased, with a $1 billion increase in the December 5-year TIPS auction and January 10-year TIPS auction.
