The New N.F.L. Owners?

The biggest upcoming football event for many of the N.F.L. owners and business executives who will populate luxury boxes at the Super Bowl this weekend is not, perhaps surprisingly, the game. It actually won’t take place until six weeks later, in Orlando, Fla., when football executives gather for the National Football League’s annual meeting — an event that has particular significance this year. Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League have already relaxed their ownership rules. But the N.F.L.

It will be the 22nd time that CBS has carried the Super Bowl, which is the most among the four broadcast networks. Cohen said CBS analyst Jay Feely, who kicked in the NFL for 14 seasons, also gave his input on where to position the cameras. The upright cameras are part of 165 cameras CBS has for Sunday. There are also 23 augmented reality cameras that both CBS and Nickelodeon will use. While various bells and whistles, like AR, are nice, they also have to be used for the right reasons, which Cohen sees with the Nickelodeon broadcast.

Given the relentless nature of Super Bowl preparations, do players ever have the time to take a step back and just enjoy the moment? Niners quarterback Brock Purdy says there is a “fine line” between serious preparations and having fun, but believes it is important to remember what being there means to him. “We are in the Super Bowl. It was the latest chapter of a thrilling season in which Purdy has ascended to become one of the faces of the league. Coach Jim Harbaugh will reportedly make an average of $16 million a year with the LA Chargers. He'd surpass his brother John's annual salary and outearn all but three of his Chargers players. Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton earns $18 million a year, while San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich is tied with Harbaugh at $16 million. AdvertisementHarbaugh is also set to outearn all but three of his Chargers players, per the sports contract database Spotrac. Harbaugh's return to the NFL was one of many high-profile football coaching changes in recent weeks — the retirement of former Alabama head coach Nick Saban also made national headlines.

In Harbaugh’s introductory press conference after he was named the new Los Angeles Chargers head coach, the 60-year-old described his excitement by drawing a comparison to Morgan Freeman’s character in the film, Ellis Boyd “Red” Redding. Get really good at football and attack it each day, like (Chargers president of football operations) John (Spanos) said. But now the new Chargers head coach wants another shot at the big time. “I said this the other day, but I’ve only got so many sands left in the hourglass, and I want another shot,” said the new the Chargers head coach. Media entrepreneur Byron Allen says he wants to buy Paramount for $14.3 billion. Who wants to buy a big TV company these days, anyway? But investors still think it's worth less than $10 billion — meaning they don't think Allen Media is really going to end up owning Paramount. AdvertisementOne answer may simply be skepticism about Allen Media Group and its owner, TV personality-turned-entrepreneur Byron Allen. But no one, to date, has suggested that Paramount is worth anything close to $14 billion.

The Jim Harbaugh derby for NFL teams is about to heat up. A week after leading the University of Michigan to a national title in the College Football Playoff, Harbaugh will meet with the Los Angeles Chargers about their head coach vacancy this week, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press. Harbaugh, who previously coached in the NFL, has a prior relationship with the Chargers and the Spanos family that owns it. To prepare for a possible NFL return, Harbaugh recently hired Don Yee as his new agent. Despite leading Michigan to its first national title since 1997, it was a frustrating year for Harbaugh.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. The NFL was concerned that nobody could make it Sunday in Buffalo, where up to a couple of feet of snow was expected overnight. So, the league and New York officials decided to postpone the Bills' wild-card playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers until Monday. They practiced all week in warm Miami, and it was 86 degrees on Friday, when they stepped on the plane to Kansas City. For you, me — it's cold,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said.

CNN —An arrest warrant has been issued for Buffalo Bills linebacker Von Miller, who has been accused of assaulting a pregnant woman, the Dallas Police Department said in a statement to CNN on Thursday. A police spokesperson told CNN the arrest warrant is active, meaning Miller is not currently in custody. Police said a preliminary investigation determined Miller and the woman had a verbal argument and that Miller allegedly assaulted her. “This morning, we were made aware of an incident involving Von Miller,” the Bills said in a statement. WBD had no comment when asked about the arrest warrant.

DENVER (AP) — Denver Broncos safety Kareem Jackson said he's flying to New York to meet with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Wednesday to get more clarity about his latest suspension and the way the league enforces its player safety rules. He's missed three games so far and will miss three more, costing him a total of $837,000 in lost wages. Previously, he's said he knows he's drawing extra scrutiny from the league for his spate of fouls. “So, hopefully something comes from this meeting — I don't think much will, because I don't even think they know," Jackson added. His hit of Dobbs upon his return on Nov. 19 didn't draw a flag but it did draw the league's ire again and resulted in his second suspension.

CNN —Back in September, the Miami Dolphins put up a historic scoreline. “The Dolphins offense has underperformed and been in the shadow of the clubs’ defense for decades,” Joe Schad, a Dolphins journalist for the Palm Beach Post, told CNN Sport. “They’re feared for the first time since legendary quarterback Dan Marino was under center.”The Mike McDaniel effectOften decked out in aviator sunglasses and white sneakers, Coach McDaniel is part-quote machine, part-football geek, part-stand-up comedian and part-offensive guru. McVay became the youngest NFL head coach when he was hired by the Los Angeles Rams at the age of 30 in 2017. Tua Tagovailoa, the NFL's only left-handed starting quarterback, spearheads the Dolphins offense.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Justin Simmons gave another impassioned defense of suspended Denver Broncos teammate Kareem Jackson on Wednesday, calling for the NFL to provide more clarity and consistency in the rules intended to protect the health and safety of players. The NFL on Tuesday upheld its four-game suspension of Jackson for lowering his helmet to hit Vikings quarterback Joshua Dobbs in Denver's 21-20 win Sunday night. “I mean, the fact that he’s going to miss the next four games in a crucial part of our season is unbelievable,” Simmons said. “And for a play that if that’s routinely going to be called, why was it not called on that one play? “We're trying our best to adapt to the rules while we’re in the game,” Simmons added.

CNN —Tom Brady may have called time on his football career, but that hasn’t stopped him from keeping a close eye on the NFL this season. Asked why he felt that way, Brady added: “I think the coaching isn’t as good as it was. “I think the rules have allowed a lot of bad habits to get into the actual performance of the game. It’s not up to a defensive player to protect an offensive player. Skewed the game so that players don’t have to be as skilled to be productive.”

Detroit (8-2), Cleveland (7-3), Jacksonville (7-3) and Houston (6-4) are currently in playoff position with a chance to end their droughts. Detroit has won just one playoff game since winning the NFL championship in 1957, nearly a decade before the first Super Bowl was played following the 1966 season. DeVito's victory was particularly noteworthy, as he managed to throw three TD passes and post a 137.7 passer rating despite getting sacked nine times against Washington. Purdy is 40 for 51 for 629 yards, six TDs, no interceptions and a 157.3 passer rating the past two weeks for the highest passer rating ever in a two-start stretch. Bland tied an NFL record last week by returning his fourth interception for a touchdown this season.

Just sitting here on a lily pad at the edge of the universe, trying to figure out what happens if the Detroit Lions meet the Cleveland Browns in the Super Bowl. I assume the cosmos, as we know them, will abruptly collapse. There will be a flash of light, a rumble of thunder, a brief narration from the Voice of God, the late NFL Films narrator John Facenda, and that’s that.
