On Monday, the Wisconsin Supreme Court gave the committee that put forward Biden's name as the only Democratic candidate, as well as the state elections commission, until Wednesday to respond. Former President Donald Trump and five of his challengers, including four who have ceased campaigning, will also be on the Wisconsin ballot. A spokesperson for the Wisconsin Democratic Party declined to comment. Phillips is asking the court to order the elections commission to add him to the list of certified candidates on the primary ballot. The Wisconsin Supreme Court must first decide whether to accept the case, and if it does, then issue a ruling.

6 Takeaways From the New Hampshire Primaries

Before then, no candidate in modern history had failed to win his party's contested New Hampshire primary and gone on to win the presidency. Front-runners Biden and former Republican President Donald Trump won their respective party's primaries. As a sitting president in 2020, Trump took 86% of the New Hampshire primary vote and 97% of the vote in the Iowa caucuses. An incumbent president who got 59% of the vote in the Iowa caucuses and close to half in the New Hampshire primary? About two-thirds (67%) of Republican primary voters in New Hampshire told exit pollsters they opposed a national ban on abortion.

The problem with this approach is that most Republican voters do not want an alternative to Trump; they overwhelmingly back him. At least that’s what the Nikki Haley campaign said after finishing second to former President Donald Trump in the New Hampshire primaries on Tuesday. Democratic nominee Bill Clinton and third-party candidate Ross Perot exploited that division in the Republican Party against Bush in the fall. The Republican Party is united behind Trump, and with optimal conditions for an opponent like Haley, Trump was still unstoppable. “Democrats deserve options, and it’s not clear at all that President Biden can beat Donald Trump.

Five takeaways from the New Hampshire primary

But she’ll be battling history: In modern presidential campaign history, no non-incumbent has won the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary without going on to win his party’s nomination. Here are five takeaways from the New Hampshire primaries:Trump wants Haley out — nowIn what were expected to be celebratory remarks Tuesday night in New Hampshire, Trump instead sounded annoyed that Haley had not yet dropped out of the Republican primary race. There are dozens of states left to go,” Haley told supporters in her election night speech Tuesday in New Hampshire. Haley waves to the audience as she speaks at a New Hampshire primary night rally, in Concord, New Hampshire, on Tuesday. (Trump skipped all five Republican primary debates, and has shown no indication he’d consider participating in one.)

What to Watch in the New Hampshire Primary

New Hampshire voters head to the polls on Tuesday for the first presidential primary of the 2024 nomination cycle, in a state that has been known to throw curveballs at overwhelming favorites. The withdrawal of Gov. Ron DeSantis from the Republican race on Sunday effectively left what had recently been a crowded field of candidates down to two: former President Donald J. Trump, and former Gov. The national Democratic Party, pushed by President Biden, had wanted New Hampshire Democrats to break tradition and move their primary to the end of February. New Hampshire refused, leaving the president’s supporters to mount a write-in campaign for the absent Mr. Biden against Representative Dean Phillips of Minnesota, the self-help author Marianne Williams and 19 other Democrats whose names are on the ballot.

The former South Carolina governor is pushing back hard against Trump’s bid to end the GOP primary race after only two nominating contests. She’s calling on voters to make a generational shift and is appealing especially to independents who can join the GOP primary in New Hampshire. According to a CNN poll conducted by the University of New Hampshire before DeSantis dropped out, Haley trailed Trump by 13 points in a two-person race. But like the late Arizona senator, Haley might still have a South Carolina problem. Even Haley’s most vehement supporter, New Hampshire GOP Gov.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden has won the New Hampshire Democratic primary as a write-in candidate. The Associated Press declared Biden the winner based on an analysis of initial vote returns where write-in votes have been tabulated by candidate. The early returns confirm the findings of AP’s VoteCast survey of likely Democratic primary voters, which found an overwhelming majority of write-in voters supporting the incumbent president. Together, they show that Biden has an insurmountable lead over the rest of the Democratic field. Biden decided not to put his name on the New Hampshire ballot, since the state’s primary violates Democratic Party rules.

Nikki Haley doesn’t defeat former President Donald Trump in New Hampshire’s primary on Tuesday, the fight may be over. Haley said Sunday she would “absolutely” remain in the Republican presidential race through South Carolina’s February 24 primary. Recent departures from the 2024 race have already shaped the New Hampshire Republican primary. Another 3% of likely GOP primary voters say they’d vote for someone else. For her part, Haley insisted Monday on Fox News that she’ll continue in the race, no matter the outcome of the New Hampshire primary.

He declined to appear on the ballot in New Hampshire after the Granite State refused to accept its demotion. But before the general election officially arrives, Mr. Biden will participate in the Democratic primary contests next month in South Carolina, Nevada and Michigan. Those races will test the Biden campaign’s ability tomobilize its most loyal voters, as polling has shown signs of weakness with core base constituencies. He is expected to address a gathering of South Carolina Democrats on Saturday. In New Hampshire, Mr. Biden’s absence on the ballot left him exposed to a collection of opponents who had virtually no shot of winning the nomination but who saw an opportunity to win attention.

The New Hampshire attorney general's office on Monday said it was investigating reports of an apparent robocall that used artificial intelligence to mimic President Joe Biden's voice and discourage voters in the state from coming to the polls during Tuesday's primary election. Attorney General John Formella said the recorded message, which was sent to multiple voters on Sunday, appears to be an illegal attempt to disrupt and suppress voting. “Your vote makes a difference in November, not this Tuesday.”It is not true that voting in Tuesday's primary precludes voters from casting a ballot in November's general election. The attorney general's office said anyone who has received the call should email the state Justice Department's election law unit. “Any effort to discourage voters is disgraceful and an unacceptable affront to democracy,” Dolan said in a statement.

Some Democratic voters in New Hampshire received calls appearing to be from Biden. The deepfakes of the president pushed Democrats to skip Tuesday's primary election in New Hampshire. AdvertisementJust before the first (but unofficial) Democratic primary of the 2024 election, voters in New Hampshire said they've received phone calls telling them not to turn out from an unlikely source: President Joe Biden. "We know the value of voting Democratic on our votes count," an inauthentic recording of Biden said in the call. The message continued, adding that participating in the Democratic primary in New Hampshire "only enables the Republicans in their quest to elect Donald Trump again.

CNN —The race for the New Hampshire Republican presidential primary appears to be former President Donald Trump’s to lose, according to a new CNN poll conducted by the University of New Hampshire following Trump’s 30-point win in Iowa’s caucuses last week. Likely Republican and Democratic primary voters were identified through survey questions about their intention to vote. A Haley victory would usher in a more competitive phase of a primary that Trump has so far dominated. President Joe Biden is not on the ballot, having made South Carolina the first formal stop on the Democratic primary calendar. “My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over,” President Gerald Ford said. “Our campaign is the last best hope of stopping the Trump-Biden nightmare,” the former UN ambassador said. If not, it won’t be as protracted a “national nightmare” as the two-year-long Watergate scandal that put Gerald Ford in the Oval Office. Though, depending on your point of view, the real nightmare could begin after the swearing-in. New Hampshire Primary: Wake-Up Call or Last Call?

Should Trump's lead hold, says Andrew Smith, director of the University of New Hampshire poll, Trump will become the first candidate – aside from sitting presidents – to win both the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary. "We're so far past the days when voters nationally were really just waking up" to the campaign debates in the early weeks of a presidential election year, says Dante Scala, a University of New Hampshire professor and author of the book "Stormy Weather: The New Hampshire Primary and Presidential Politics." New Hampshire GOP voters, however, are a different breed of Republicans, Smith says, focusing more on fiscal conservatism and small government. Haley has 36% support and DeSantis 6% backing among primary voters. Trump seems to think so, too: He has focused much of his vitriol in the waning days of the New Hampshire campaign on Haley.

The campaign website for Representative Dean Phillips, the Minnesota Democrat mounting a long-shot primary challenge to President Biden, has a policy platform that signals liberal bona fides tempered by a Midwestern businessman’s practicality. It includes headers like “Climate Action,” “Women’s Health and Economic Security” and “Immigration Reform.”Sometime on Tuesday, one header was changed. Gone was “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.” In its place: “Equity and Restorative Justice.”The text beneath the header — including acknowledgments of racial disparities and vague promises to ensure equal opportunity — was untouched. But the tweak was nonetheless significant. Even more so was its timing: On Saturday, Mr. Phillips had received the endorsement of William A. Ackman, the billionaire investor who in recent months has become an outspoken critic of so-called D.E.I.

It's a constant source of frustration for the Minnesota congressman challenging President Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination. Sure, Phillips is on the ballot in New Hampshire, which holds its primary Tuesday. Biden won't debate Phillips, which is standard behavior for incumbent presidents with primary opponents. And the Biden campaign declined to weigh in on Phillips’ candidacy – also standard for incumbents not facing serious threats from challenges within their own parties. Democratic activists are mounting a write-in campaign for Biden.
