When I started following Nikki Glaser in early December as she began putting together her Golden Globes monologue, she planned a joke that never made it into Sunday’s awards show about shouting out Harrison Ford and then saying, “Harrison Ford is here to show us a cool rock he found.”It was more off-kilter than her usual material, and it absolutely delighted Glaser. She told her staff that this was a different kind of laugh they should embrace: “Don’t be scared to be weird.”You saw evidence of this in her stellar monologue at the Globes that included the kind of hard punchlines she is known for, including a good insult of Paramount+, a joke about the effect of Sean Combs’s arrest on the after-party and a sharp feminist shot at the Globes for ignoring women for best director in past years (two, Coralie Fargeat and Payal Kapadia, are nominated this year). But there was also a new bit added in the last week: an impression of Adam Sandler pronouncing Timothée Chalamet’s name that was just pure silliness. She even got Sandler to join in. Glaser doesn’t usually do impressions, but she committed and it went over really well, adding to a celebratory, fun tone to kick the night off.

“I wanted to record this message for my family,” Shamsud-Din Jabbar said in the videos. Jabbar, 42, drove a rented truck from Houston to New Orleans on New Year’s Eve, authorities said, posting videos online along the way. While it may not have surprised experts, Jabbar’s rampage has bewildered his family, friends and colleagues, who described him as kind and unassuming. “It’s a complete surprise, a shock to everyone,” Jabbar’s half brother, Abdur-Rahim Jabbar IV, 24, said in an interview this week. Jabbar expressed being upset about the situation, calling it “genocide on both sides.”After his most recent divorce, Jabbar seemed to become more devout, though he never discussed ISIS or any radical ideologies.

The Justice Department on Friday urged the Supreme Court to reject President-elect Donald Trump’s request to delay the implementation of a law that would effectively ban TikTok in the U.S. or force its sale by its Chinese parent company by Jan. 19. TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance, sued to try to stop implementation of the law, arguing that it violates its free speech rights under the First Amendment. “The Act satisfies any level of First Amendment scrutiny, and this Court should uphold it,” they added. “Nothing in the Act would prevent a post-divestiture TikTok from presenting exactly the same content in exactly the same manner. The Act targets control by a foreign adversary, not protected speech,” Justice Department lawyers wrote in Friday’s filing.

The Summary A report from the U.S. surgeon general suggested that labels on alcoholic drinks should warn about cancer risk. Doctors on Friday applauded a new report from the U.S. surgeon general that highlights links between alcohol consumption and seven types of cancer and suggests that alcoholic drinks should come with cancer warning labels. Alcohol is the third leading preventable cause of cancer in the U.S., behind tobacco and obesity, according to the surgeon general’s report. Compared to smoking, doctors said, there’s less research on how long it takes to see reductions in cancer risk after a person stops drinking. Already, adults under 35 have become less likely to drink alcohol than that group was decades ago, according to a 2023 analysis.

JetBlue has agreed to pay a $2 million penalty after federal regulators charged the U.S. carrier with operating multiple chronically delayed flight routes. Half the penalty will go toward compensating JetBlue customers affected by the airline’s chronic delays or any future disruptions caused by JetBlue within the next year — with a minimum of $75 for each harmed passenger. “Illegal chronic flight delays make flying unreliable for travelers. JetBlue had the seventh-worst on-time rate among North American carriers last year, trailing only Frontier Airlines, Air Canada and the Canadian carrier WestJet, according to the International Air Transport Association. The transportation department's investigation found JetBlue operated four chronically delayed routes, with the airline responsible for around 80% of the disruptions.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson walks to the House Chamber from his office at the US Capitol on December 20. The speaker is “not inclined to negotiate or make backroom-side deals,” a leadership source told CNN. Whether that posture changes remains to be seen since Johnson’s allies are uncertain whether he can win the speakership on the first ballot on Friday. If Johnson fails to win on the first vote, the House could proceed to a second vote immediately after. They could also decide to continue to vote on the floor.

The Palestinian Authority temporarily halted operations of Qatar’s Al Jazeera television in the territory including its broadcasts, citing the network’s dissemination of “inciting material,” the Palestinian news agency WAFA said on Wednesday. The Palestinian Authority criticized Al Jazeera last week over its coverage of the weeks-long standoff between Palestinian security forces and militant fighters in the Jenin camp in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Al Jazeera denounced Wednesday’s decision as “an attempt to discourage it from reporting spiraling events in the occupied territories,” according to a statement. ISIS is far from moribund, even if it is now a loosely linked network rather than a self-declared caliphate controlling sizeable cities. There is also the perennial concern among Western security services that individuals inspired by ISIS will launch low-tech attacks – such as stabbings, shootings and driving vehicles into crowds. Events in the Middle East have pushed already radicalized individuals to violence, according to Rita Katz, executive director of SITE Intelligence, a non-governmental organization that monitors terror groups,.
