The NAR, which represents more than 1 million Realtors, also agreed to put in place a set of new rules. One prevents sellers’ brokers from setting buyers’ agents’ compensation, which critics say led brokers to push more expensive properties on customers. Another new rule will require buyers’ brokers to enter into written agreements with their buyers. Realtors could now compete on commissions, allowing for prospective buyers to shop around on rates before they commit to buying a home. The association also faces scrutiny from the US Department of Justice, and it’s unclear whether this settlement with sellers will impact the government’s scrutiny of the brokerage industry.

New York CNN —Dealmaking is the lifeblood of Wall Street. But analysts say that funding cuts in the plan could end up harming mergers and acquisitions on Wall Street, squashing hopes of a recovery in dealmaking. The bad news: Recent regulations and proposed budget cuts threaten to step on those green shoots before they’re able to flower. Why it matters: Dealmaking isn’t just good for Wall Street. Shares of the stock are down nearly 30% so far this year after its seemingly nonstop streak of bad luck.

CNN —Alaska Airlines flight 1282, on which a door plug blew off the side of the plane shortly after takeoff on January 5, was scheduled to be taken out of service for maintenance the night of the incident, the airline said Tuesday. Such deferred maintenance is common and legal, and the plane had made 154 successful flights before the blowout. It’s not clear that an expedited maintenance schedule would have led Alaska Airlines to discover that problem. “The U.S. aviation system is the safest in the world because it relies on layers: redundant systems, robust processes and procedures, and the willingness to stop and ensure things are right before every takeoff,” Alaska Airlines said in a statement. Although the revelation that the plane was scheduled for service the same day as the blowout does not necessarily suggest any wrongdoing by Alaska Airlines, it does raise further concerns about policies and regulations surrounding maintenance of America’s fleet of aircraft.

Boeing is in big trouble

LATAM called it a “technical event.” Boeing said it’s working to gather more information. Between lawsuits, potential fines and lost business, Boeing could lose billions more dollars from the blowout. In February, pilots on a United Airlines 737 Max reported that the flight controls jammed as the plane landed in Newark. The FAA is allowing the planes to continue flying and Boeing said the problem does not pose an immediate safety risk. And the FAA said Boeing’s safety and quality problems extend beyond its inability to produce paperwork.

Altman’s return comes after an independent investigation found the board did not need to fire him in the first place. Altman in November was fired as CEO and director by the OpenAI board in a shocking dismissal of an executive who had become the face of AI in Silicon Valley. “I am excited to welcome Sue, Nicole, and Fidji to the OpenAI Board of Directors,” Taylor said in a statement. But Altman, Brockman and Sutskever in 2019 formed OpenAI LP, a for-profit entity that exists within the larger company’s structure. Altman, in the press conference, praised the company’s employees for their determination to do good work throughout its turmoil.

New York CNN —OpenAI fired back at Elon Musk, who sued the ChatGPT company last week for chasing profit and diverging from its original, nonprofit mission. Tuesday night, OpenAI published several of Musk’s emails from the early days of the company that appear to show Musk acknowledging OpenAI needed to make a ton of money to fund the incredible computing resources needed to power its AI ambitions. OpenAI in a blog post Tuesday night said Musk never followed through on his promise, committing $45 million in funding for OpenAI, while other donors raised $90 million. Musk, in a February 1, 2018, email, told company executives that the only path forward for OpenAI was for Tesla, his electric car company, to buy it. The company said in its blog post that it has not diverged from its mission, and it would move to dismiss all of Musk’s claims.

Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015, has since left and has formed his own AI company, xAI. Musk is asking for a jury trial and for the company, Altman and co-founder Greg Brockman to pay back the profit they received from the business. But Altman, Brockman and Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever in 2019 formed OpenAI LP, a for-profit entity that exists within the larger company’s structure. Musk’s complaint said that company and its partnership with Microsoft violated OpenAI’s charter, representing a breach of contract. “Where some like Mr. Musk see an existential threat in AGI, others see AGI as a source of profit and power,” the complaint stated.

Hong Kong CNN —Nvidia has named Huawei a top competitor in a number of areas, including in the crucial production of processors that power artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Other companies also listed as its rivals in some areas include AMD, Amazon (AMZN), Microsoft (MSFT) and Broadcom (AVGO). In October 2022, the Biden administration imposed sweeping curbs designed to curtail China’s access to advanced computing chips. In July, it imposed export controls on two strategic raw materials, gallium and germanium, that are critical to the global chipmaking industry. Data centers, which includes the graphics cards that are widely use in generative AI, are Nvidia’s biggest source of revenue.

CNN —Pharmacies across the United States are reporting that they are having difficulty getting prescriptions to patients because of a cyberattack on a unit of UnitedHealth. The cyberattack prevented some pharmacies from processing prescriptions to insurance companies to receive payment. “This outage is impacting dispensing of pharmacy prescriptions – resulting in delays in processing and in some cases, inability to process,” the hospital said. In a statement, Change Healthcare said it believed the attack was isolated to its network and did not spread elsewhere. “At this time, we believe the issue is specific to Change Healthcare and all other systems across UnitedHealth Group are operational,” the company said.

Car repairs are getting more expensive. Here's why
  + stars: | 2024-02-11 | by ( Robert Ferris | In | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
Your eyes aren't fooling you — your car repair bill really is getting more expensive. Repair costs are rising relative to the overall rate of inflation. Motor vehicle maintenance and repair costs increased 4.1% per year from November 2013 to November 2023, compared with just 2.8% for the overall consumer price index. Meanwhile, talent to repair cars is scarce. Many in the auto space think costs can't continue to rise at these rates.

CNN —A jury has awarded climate scientist Michael Mann more than $1 million in a defamation lawsuit he brought against a former scholar and a media personality who lampooned Mann’s work. A jury in the Washington, DC, Superior Court civil case awarded Mann $1 million in punitive damages and a dollar from each defendant in compensatory damages. Mann had also sued the National Review and Competitive Enterprise Institute. Mann intends to appeal that 2021 decision, which said the Competitive Enterprise Institute and National Review could not be held liable for defamation, according to multiple reports. However, Mann’s is the latest in a recent string of defamation trial victories for plaintiffs or large settlements – most notably including E. In a letter days before the Fed’s decision Wednesday to hold interest rates steady at a 23-year high, Democratic US senators blasted the central bank for America’s housing woes. In 2021 when the Fed’s key interest rate was near zero, home-price growth soared at a historic double-digit pace, according to the S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller National Home Price Index. Divounguy said that the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate will likely not fall below 6% this year. Evidence of a strong economy has so far been lost on a general public that still feels the pinch of inflation and worries about the uncertainty of life in 2024. Signs of a thaw in public opinion, but pessimism still dominatesA new CNN poll shows Biden still has a lot of convincing to do: Perception of the economy remains deep under water. However, if hiring remains strong and inflation keeps falling, it may become easier for Biden to convince voters he’s doing a good job strengthening the economy. CNN’s polling editor Ariel Edwards-Levy notes that about half the country, 48%, thinks the economy remains in a downturn. New York CNN —Former President Donald Trump said that if he is reelected, he would not reappoint Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, accusing Powell of considering rate cuts to give Democrats an advantage in the 2024 elections. The former president said he has “a couple of choices” for the next Fed chair but declined to name them. Powell reiterated Wednesday the Fed is considering rate cuts to bring rates down from multi-decade highs designed to combat high inflation. Trump accused Powell of being “political,” adding to years of verbal attacks since Trump nominated him for Fed chair in 2017. Trump sparred with Powell almost immediately after he was appointed to the Fed, accusing Powell of hiking interest rates to harm the economy.

Boeing and Spirit AeroSystems are under multiple investigations that probe their safety policies and procedures. Boeing said it couldn’t comment on the reports about what may have led to the door plug blowing off the plane, citing the ongoing investigation. The process also includes tightening fasteners and performing “detailed inspections of…dozens of associated components.”FAA on Sunday also required airlines to ensure older Boeing 737 planes with similar door plugs were secure. The FAA said airlines operating the Boeing 737-900ER model should visually inspect the planes but didn’t require them to be grounded. Donald Trump's 2016 primary win in New Hampshire was driven by his support among independents. The state's voting laws allow independents to vote in the GOP primary — which could give Haley a huge lift. And in the 2016 New Hampshire GOP primary, undeclared voters — or independents — largely ate it up. But while Trump led Haley among GOP voters 67%-23%, Haley bested him among undeclared voters 58%-30%.
