Women going through menopause raise concerns about weight and body changes almost as often as they do about hot flashes and night sweats, said Dr. Stephanie Faubion, medical director for the Menopause Society and a director of the Mayo Clinic’s Center for Women’s Health. Some estimates suggest that roughly 70 percent of women gain up to 1.5 pounds per year during the menopause transition, which can last as long as a decade. This weight gain can affect women’s self-esteem and quality of life and can also increase the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other health issues. Excess weight is also correlated with more hot flashes and night sweats; the Menopause Society recommends weight loss as an effective nonhormonal treatment for those symptoms. Now, some women going through menopause are seeking drugs like Ozempic, despite the steep costs: Without insurance coverage, the drugs can run around $1,000 a month.

When Ms. Coombes, 41, sat down to eat very small portions, an interrogation broke out at the Thanksgiving table. “There was a lot of ‘Why aren’t you eating?’ or ‘Why isn’t there more on your plate?’” she said. That reality has sent many people who take Ozempic and similar drugs into preparation mode. Dr. Scott Hagan, an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Washington who studies obesity, said patients ask him if they can skip doses of Ozempic or similar drugs before a food-focused event like Thanksgiving. He advises them not to, for a few reasons: For people with diabetes, missing a dose of Ozempic and then consuming a high-carb meal could lead to a blood sugar spike.

Measles Cases Climb Across the Globe

The report captures the continued burden of measles, one of the world’s most contagious diseases. In 2022, there were an estimated nine million measles cases and 136,000 deaths, according to the report. Vaccination is highly effective at stopping the spread of measles, and preventing people from getting sick if exposed to the virus. The measles vaccine, which experts say is ideally delivered in childhood, also includes protection against two other infectious diseases, mumps and rubella. Low-income countries had the lowest vaccination rates, with only 66 percent of children receiving their first dose, and the highest risk of death from measles.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Police in the nation's capital responded Wednesday night to a protest outside the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee calling for a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war. Video posted on social media showed protesters shoving police officers and trying to grab hold of metal barricades as the officers moved in to make arrests. Protester Dani Noble said the demonstrators came to the DNC on Wednesday night to peacefully call on Democratic Party leadership to support a cease-fire in Gaza. “It is shameful the way that nonviolent protesters and members of our community were met with violence tonight. By that time, most of the leadership team, including House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, had already left.

A pivotal new study suggests that the weight loss drug Wegovy cut the risk of heart attack, stroke or death from cardiovascular issues by 20 percent among overweight or obese people with heart disease — a striking benefit that could change the standard of care for these patients. “We’ve just identified a new best practice,” said Dr. Clyde Yancy, chief of the division of cardiology at Northwestern Medicine, who was not involved with the study. Drug companies see potential for the medicines that extends far beyond obesity. Outside of statins, she said, no medication has so dramatically reduced cardiovascular risk among people with heart disease. “The uptake of this drug is going to be skyrocketing in the next couple of years,” she said.

A rise in American Jewish gun ownership would come as a noticeable shift for a group that is historically liberal and a majority of which are registered Democrats. A 2018 American Jewish Committee poll showed 70% of Jewish respondents thought it was more important to control gun ownership than to protect Americans’ rights to own guns. The US government does not keep official statistics on gun ownership, including demographic information. Research from industry groups like the National Shooting Sports Foundation break down gun ownership by race and gender but not by religious affiliation. The spike in violence and hateful rhetoric has evoked fears within the Jewish community of another Holocaust, according to Daniel.

Growth picked up while quiescent inflation permitted interest rates to fall. Bereft of government support, central banks tried to stimulate their economies by pushing interest rates to new lows. That means interest rates will struggle to return to the ultra-low levels seen after 2008. The first takeaway is that higher debt levels, inflation and interest rates should be bad for bonds. More than 14,000 licensed childcare facilities across the US are due for a state-mandate inspection. Inspired by Morin's video, researchers at USAFacts, a not-for-profit group owned by current Los Angeles Clippers owner and former Microsoft Executive Steve Ballmer, compiled inspection data from 148,166 licensed childcare facilities in 41 states between June and September 2023 to discover that 14,683 licensed childcare facilities across the country are behind on receiving their state-mandated inspections. As for Minnesota, its state records reflect that 85% of its childcare facilities have received an inspection recently enough to comply with state law. Tennessee, for example, requires childcare facilities to be inspected four times a year, while California only requires it once every three years. In the case of Morin's son's childcare facility, prior state inspections had already flagged it repeatedly for grossly violating the child-to-caregiver ratios.

REUTERS/Nir Elias/Illustration Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Oct 12 (Reuters) - Israel has raised $200 million from diaspora bond sales since the war with Hamas began, Israel Bonds said in a statement. The group, the government's vehicle for diaspora bonds, said that U.S. state and local governments accounted for $150 million of the purchases. "The response across many U.S. states was immediate and demand exceeded the amount of Israel bonds that we were able to sell at that time," Dani Naveh, president at Israel Bonds, said in a statement. Israel Bonds said it had nearly reached its standard annual goal to raise $1 billion before the war began. "After the tests carried out on our player Arda Guler, he has been diagnosed with an injury to the left rectus femoris muscle," Real said in a statement. The 18-year-old Turkey international returned early from the club's pre-season tour with a knee injury, for which he underwent surgery in August. Guler returned to training a few days ago, but his latest injury has thwarted his anticipated debut against Las Palmas on Wednesday.
