We are actually going to be looking at this in the very early days of generative AI. casey newtonYeah, this feels like one of the big questions in AI right now. rebecca tushnetSo I see why you say that’s strange, but in fact, it’s exactly how you would make a general-purpose tool. But now, finally, along come these new technologies to take them down a peg, and they’re actually going to have to work for a living. So maybe they’re slapping, like, AI sort of things around the stories that they’re aggregating.

The same inevitable supply-and-demand dynamic is about to wash over us again with large language models and generative AI. AI models are trained on masses of data from the past. Humans are good at learning quickly from a small amount of data, while AI models need mountains of information to train on. Soon, human content creators will be vying for attention with content generated by AI models. 'Utility, value and signaling'Hartz, a venture capitalist who now chairs Eventbrite's board, says successful technologists will continue to spend heavily on human experiences.

NEW YORK (AP) — The already-alarming proliferation of child sexual abuse images on the internet could become much worse if something is not done to put controls on artificial intelligence tools that generate deepfake photos, a watchdog agency warned on Tuesday. In a written report, The U.K.-based Internet Watch Foundation urges governments and technology providers to act quickly before a flood of AI-generated images of child sexual abuse overwhelms law enforcement investigators and vastly expands the pool of potential victims. If it isn’t stopped, the flood of deepfake child sexual abuse images could bog investigators down trying to rescue children who turn out to be virtual characters. “That is just incredibly shocking.”Sexton said his charity organization, which is focused on combating online child sexual abuse, first began fielding reports about abusive AI-generated imagery earlier this year. It particularly targets the European Union, where there's a debate over surveillance measures that could automatically scan messaging apps for suspected images of child sexual abuse even if the images are not previously known to law enforcement.

OpenAI, the company behind the viral chatbot, has officially launched real-time internet browsing for ChatGPT, three weeks after reintroducing the beta version of the capability — but it has been a significantly bumpy ride. But one of OpenAI's goals has been to expand ChatGPT's data — and search engine capabilities — into the here and now. In March, the company experimented with a ChatGPT web-browsing plugin for a limited number of users. The company has been slowly rolling out the feature again, after allowing site owners to opt out of the web crawling. Two of the foremost competitors in that race are OpenAI with ChatGPT and Google with its competitor, Bard.

A key person in the middle of all this is Sissie Hsiao, Google's VP and general manager of Bard and Google Assistant. If it disappoints, it will embolden critics who say Google has fallen behind. Google Assistant was the answer, and in 2021 Google reshuffled its search team to put Hsiao in charge of its voice assistant.

The EU may be the first to enact generative AI regulation. The EU is likely to be the first region to enact some form of oversight or regulation around generative AI. The European Commission, which includes two dozen countries, is in late-stage negotiations over the AI Act, which it dubbed "the world's first rules on AI." Some AI tools could be banned in EuropeThe Act was first proposed in 2021, before OpenAI released its generative AI tools ChatGPT and DALL-E, leading the likes of Meta, Google, and Microsoft, to become public players in and leading proponents of generative AI. That one requirement could be enough to keep consumer-level generative AI out of China almost entirely.

New research finds that female-led AI companies are missing out on the global rush to invest in AI. AI startups founded by women in the UK raised six times less than those founded by men in the past decade. This occurs even as the number of female-founded AI companies that are launching, rises. "One of our biggest priorities is ensuring AI models are fair and unbiased," she said. "While AI is heavily male-dominated and we still see a big gender disparity at AI events in San Francisco, we're hopeful this will change as more women become involved in AI companies.

Artists and image owners can now ask OpenAI to remove their images from DALL-E training data. OpenAI recently unveiled a new form that image owners and creators can use to request that owned or copyrighted images be removed from DALL-E training data. AI models need high quality, and human generated training data to perform well. "Enraging"Toby Bartlett, an artist with a namesake consulting firm, wrote on Threads that OpenAI's DALL-E opt-out process is "enraging." Or, as OpenAI put it, its model will have "learned from their training data" and be able to "retain the concepts that they learned."

Slamming the tentative labor deal between Hollywood writers and studios, media mogul Barry Diller on Tuesday laid out his biggest bone of contention with generative artificial intelligence. "All we want to do is establish that there is no such thing as fair use for AI, which gives us standing." Generative AI and language-based model systems index entire bodies of work within their knowledge base, a violation of fair use, some argue. Altman, who also served on the Expedia board with Diller, testified before senators in May to discuss regulations on AI. ChatGPT can now generate images — and they are shockingly detailed. On Wednesday, OpenAI, the San Francisco artificial intelligence start-up, released a new version of its DALL-E image generator to a small group of testers and folded the technology into ChatGPT, its popular online chatbot. Called DALL-E 3, it can produce more convincing images than previous versions of the technology, showing a particular knack for images containing letters, numbers and human hands, the company said. By adding the latest version of DALL-E to ChatGPT, OpenAI is solidifying its chatbot as a hub for generative A.I., which can produce text, images, sounds, software and other digital media on its own. Since ChatGPT went viral last year, it has kicked off a race among Silicon Valley tech giants to be at the forefront of A.I.

Tim Burton said AI art generators' imitations of his work felt soulless and lacked "humanity." He was referring to a BuzzFeed article that used AI to give Disney characters a Tim Burton makeover. Someone online prompts an AI art generator to imagine what a Wes Anderson version of "Star Wars" would look like, or Disney characters in the spooky style of Tim Burton. This BuzzFeed article features dark and creepy versions of Disney characters, like Elsa from Frozen. In an interesting twist, a federal judge recently ruled that AI artwork is not able to be copyrighted, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Google launches watermarks for AI-generated images
  + stars: | 2023-08-30 | by ( Jennifer Korn | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
New York CNN —In an effort to help prevent the spread of misinformation, Google on Tuesday unveiled an invisible, permanent watermark on images that will identify them as computer-generated. The technology, called SynthID, embeds the watermark directly into images created by Imagen, one of Google’s latest text-to-image generators. In recent months, an AI-generated image of Pope Francis in a puffer jacket went viral and AI-generated images of former President Donald Trump getting arrested were widely shared before he was indicted. With the announcement of SynthID, Google joins a growing number of startups and Big Tech companies that are trying to find solutions. The tech company also announced that every AI-generated image created by Google will carry a markup in the original file to “give context” if the image is found on another website or platform.

The "AI for business" diploma offers training in data and AI for client leaders, practitioners, and WPP executives, according to WPP's website. The team work under AI expert Daniel Hulme who was appointed chief AI officer at WPP two years ago. While lawmakers and philosophers alike still debate whether content produced by generative AI models amounts to anything like human creativity, advertisers have already begun using the technology in their promotional campaigns. Unilever, which owns more than 400 brands including Dove soap and Ben & Jerry's ice cream, has its own generative AI technology that can write product descriptions for retailers' websites and digital commerce sites, it said. The company's TRESemmé haircare brand has used its AI content generator for written content and its automation tool for visual content on Amazon.co.uk (AMZN.O).
