New York CNN —A former Florida-based TD Bank employee was arrested for his alleged role in a massive money-laundering scheme by drug cartels for which the US government previously fined the bank $3 billion. The arrest follows the record fine TD Bank faced in October, after the US Department of Justice said it had “long-term, pervasive, and systemic deficiencies” in its procedures for monitoring transactions. More than 90% of transactions went unmonitored between January 2018 to April 2024, which “enabled three money laundering networks to collectively transfer more than $670 million through TD Bank accounts,” according to a previous legal filing. It’s rare for the government to go after an individual bank employee in this kind of case. In October, TD Bank CEO Bharat Masrani said in a statement: “This is a difficult chapter in our bank’s history.

Prosecutors from the Manhattan district attorney's office are urging a New York judge not to throw out President-elect Donald Trump's criminal conviction in the hush money case, offering a variety of suggestions on how the case could proceed without interfering with his presidential duties. They also knocked Trump's claim that the case should be "immediately" dismissed because he's already protected by presidential immunity. Judge Juan Merchan indefinitely postponed Trump's sentencing last month so both sides could present their arguments on the issue. Prosecutors presented a number of possible ways forward, including staying Trump's sentencing until after he's out of office. Judge Adrienne Nelson said Tuesday afternoon that a merger between the two companies would end up harming consumers. The two companies "engage in substantial head-to-head competition and the proposed merger would remove that competition," Ferguson wrote. As a result, the proposed merger would likely to lead to outcomes that "unilaterally" harm consumers, and is thus "presumptively unlawful. " Judge Ferguson also ruled the merger would be bad for workers, arguing increased consolidation would reduce workers' bargaining power. A federal judge in North Dakota blocked a Biden administration rule that allowed DACA recipients to sign up for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act. People who received benefits from DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, began signing up for coverage under the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, at the start of open enrollment on Nov. 1. Coverage for those who signed up was expected to start as early as Jan. 1. Still, the elimination of expanded coverage, Pillai said, could leave thousands of uninsured DACA recipients in those states without an affordable option. “Given that President-elect Trump tried to end DACA during his first term and his views on immigration more broadly, the Trump administration seems unlikely to appeal any ruling against DACA or the coverage expansion,” Pillai said.

New York Attorney General Letitia James has rejected Donald Trump's request to walk away from her office's $486 million civil fraud judgment against the president-elect. There is "no merit to your claim that the pendency of defendants’ own appeal will impede Mr. Trump’s official duties as President," Vale wrote. Judge Arthur Engoron handed down a $350 million judgment against Trump, his company and several top executives in February, after a monthslong civil trial included testimony from Trump and his oldest children.
