Over the summer, Florida’s Broward County Public Schools made the decision to ban students from using cellphones and other communication devices for the entire school day. It's a particularly sensitive topic in Broward County after the 2018 Parkland shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, which is in the district. Carline Dumoulin, a mother of two students at Broward’s Cypress Bay High School, is one of those signatories. Broward County school board member Debra Hixon was present at the meeting where the rule was approved, but had left before the vote. Last year, a video of several students fighting at West Broward High School circulated online, gaining thousands of views on X.

Demonstrators hold a banner reading 'Mazon Resignation' during a march on November 9 to protest against authorities' response to deadly flooding in Valencia, Spain. The regional president, who according to some Spanish media reports was at a restaurant hours into the floods, has denied missing any calls prior to the floods turning catastrophic. If he wins the election in November, he has pledged to follow a similar course on another contentious policy proposal: ending birthright citizenship. Under Trump’s proposal, at least one parent would need to be a citizen or legal resident for a child to receive birthright citizenship. Trump had pledged to end birthright citizenship when first running for president in 2015 and he raised it again in 2018. A ballot measure that would have enshrined abortion rights in Florida's constitution failed on Tuesday, NBC News projects, after a political fight that was among the most hotly contested in the state this election cycle. The amendment won majority support from Florida voters, but it needed to cross the 60% threshold to pass under state law. Its defeat is a setback for reproductive rights groups in the red-leaning state and a victory for Republican Gov. Even though the ballot measure failed, the NBC News Exit poll found that 65% of Florida voters said abortion should be legal in all or most cases. Another ballot measure DeSantis opposed, the effort to legalize the use of recreational marijuana in Florida, also failed on Tuesday, NBC News projected.
