In 2016, the Libertarian Party presidential candidate, Gary Johnson, received more votes than any of the party’s other candidates in history and the most of any third-party candidate since Ross Perot — and arguably, the Libertarian Party has never recovered. As pro athletes deal with the ramifications of betting on games, a growing number of people are also grappling with mental health issues associated with sports betting. Gambling addiction hotlines across the country have reported a huge surge in traffic in recent years. Texts and chats to the National Problem Gambling Helpline have increased around 800% since 2018 while call volume grew nearly 80%. To the Editor:Re “Should Trump Be Sentenced to Prison? Two Opposing Views” (Opinion guest essay, June 3):The retired judge Nancy Gertner’s argument against imprisoning Donald Trump omits the simple reality that without prison time, Donald Trump faces no meaningful punishment. Mr. Trump plainly does not see the fact of having been convicted, standing by itself, as a shameful judgment on himself. And Mr. Trump is not a credible candidate for probation. No one can argue with a straight face that Mr. Trump sees any need to change his life, nor that criminal justice system supervision could bring him around.

Prominent former White House aides like Stephen Bannon and Stephen Miller have demanded locally elected Republicans use their power to target Democrats. Ronny Jackson, a House representative from Texas, said he would encourage Congress to “aggressively go after” President Biden and his family. Seeking legal retribution is nothing new for Trump, who in 2016 echoed chants of “Lock her up” against Hillary Clinton. But the intensity of anger and open desire to use the criminal justice system against Democrats after last week’s verdict surpasses anything seen before. Many of the calls have come from people who are expected to play larger roles in a potential second term under Trump.

New York CNN —Hourly retail security workers are now wearing police-like body cameras at major stores. The manufacturer of Taser devices and other security companies are now designing and marketing body cameras specifically for retail workers. “Body cameras are just one of the many ways that we work to support a safe store environment,” the spokesperson said. Bakery chain Greggs gave employees body cameras after a rise in sausage roll thefts and threats from customers. Applebaum also expressed concerns about the information the body cameras are collecting and whether it could be used to stymie union organizing attempts.
