This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Karla Trotman, President and CEO of Electro Soft Inc., a US specialty electronics manufacturer in Pennsylvania. My dad and I worked together, and in 2020, I bought them out, so now I'm the owner, president, and CEO. We're still feeling the reverberation from the last round of tariffs, so they never really went away in our industry. Tariff proponents seem to think that enforcing them will cause stateside manufacturing to somehow jump up and be prosperous, but it doesn't really work that way. We really need to understand where our partners are headed so we can flex to meet whatever demand is going to come down the pike.

The surgeon general’s 837-page report on tobacco use found that 37.8% of gay, lesbian and bisexual U.S. adults have tried electronic cigarettes, compared with just 16.5% of their straight counterparts. He said that LGBTQ people use tobacco products at higher rates largely because of “long-standing stigma” within health care settings. Still, 36 million U.S. adults and 760,000 middle and high school students smoke tobacco products, according to the report. Since 2014, the most commonly used tobacco product among U.S. youths and young adults is e-cigarettes. “These and other noncombustible tobacco products such as nicotine pouches have the potential to undermine overall progress in preventing and reducing young people’s use of tobacco products,” the authors stated.

The spinoff is expected to be formally announced on Wednesday. The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the impending announcement on Tuesday evening, said the involved channels also include USA, Oxygen, E!, Syfy and Golf Channel. While observers may view the spinoff as an attempt to shed cable channels that are losing value in the streaming age, the channels still contribute strong profits to Comcast’s bottom line. This bomb cyclone will work with an atmospheric river, a long plume of water vapor moving like a river through the atmosphere, to wring out heavy rainfall and significant mountain snowfall in the Pacific Northwest and Northern California beginning Tuesday. The pair will stall along the coast and hammer the area with hazardous conditions through the week and into the weekend. Rainfall of this magnitude is expected to cause significant urban flooding, debris flow on roadways and river flooding. Strong winds could cause extensive damage to trees and power lines,” the National Weather Service office in Seattle warned.
