While economists say this holiday shopping season could ultimately be the most normal one (sales-wise) since before the pandemic, it’s also decked out with plenty of uncertainty. While it would set a new record as well (keep in mind, those figures aren’t adjusted for inflation), this holiday season might be a little more muted than last. A shortened holiday seasonA short shopping season, however, may force the hands of retailers who are looking to hold back on deep promotions. This year, there are 26 days between Thanksgiving and Christmas, marking the shortest holiday shopping season possible. Courtesy Dan MarshallMarshall remains quite optimistic that Mischief will enjoy yet another strong Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and, ultimately, holiday season.

Google proposes fresh tweaks to search results in Europe
  + stars: | 2024-11-26 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Google has proposed more changes to its search results in Europe after some smaller rivals complained about lower traffic to their sites resulting from previous tweaks by the Alphabet unit and as EU antitrust regulators consider levying charges against the company under new EU tech rules. Under the Digital Markets Act, Google is prohibited from favouring its products and services on its platform. The latter three groups said their direct booking clicks have fallen by 30% due to recent Google changes. "We think the latest proposal is the right way to balance the difficult trade-offs that the DMA involves," Bethell said. "We're very reluctant to take this step, as removing helpful features does not benefit consumers or businesses in Europe," Bethell said.

A handful of retail stocks stand to benefit more than others as the holiday shopping season gets underway in earnest on Black Friday, if history is any guide. Citigroup analyst Paul Lejuez also pointed to a encouraging consumer spending trends heading into Black Friday. "Overall, our survey paints a favorable picture for holiday spending," Lejeuz wrote late last week. Executives cited strong holiday shopping trends as a tailwind. The company's third-quarter earnings on Tuesday surpassed analyst estimates on the top and bottom line, while Abercrombie also raised its year-over-year sales guidance, signaling strong holiday shopping trends.

The developers would only need to reveal the training material that is “sufficient to identify with certainty” whether the copyright holder’s works were used. Failing to comply would create a legal assumption — until proven otherwise — that the AI developer did indeed use the copyrighted work. Sen. Peter Welch, D-Vt., who introduced the bill Thursday, said the country must “set a higher standard for transparency” as AI continues to integrate itself into Americans’ lives. “We need to give America’s musicians, artists, and creators a tool to find out when A.I. Companies that rely on human creative labor have tried to take on AI developers as well.

NBC News is helping shoppers answer those questions by tracking the online prices of five popular gift items in major categories this season. Second, retailers change prices regularly, making unannounced price cuts on various items all the time. Take the AirPods and the Ninja coffee maker, for example: This past weekend, both hit their lowest online prices since NBC News began tracking them months ago. Overall spending is projected to increase by 7% to an average of $1,638 per shopper this holiday season, according to PwC. Formula 1 announced Monday that it has approved the entry of GM and Cadillac as a new team on the grid, bringing a storied American car maker into the pinnacle of motorsport. But the added promise from GM to become a “works” team — building both a car and a power unit — led to a breakthrough. It will be the first time since 2016 that F1 has had more than 10 teams on the grid. One of those existing teams, Haas F1, is owned by American Gene Haas with headquarters in North Carolina. The move sets up a clash of two American car giants, GM and Ford, in Formula 1.

New York CNN —Iced coffee just isn’t the same when you make it at home. This year, Keurig Dr Pepper launched a machine that is dedicated to iced coffee, advertising a drink “as cold as the coffee shops” in three minutes or less for $199. But there’s science behind why iced coffee is so much better at coffee shops, and current single-serve espresso machine innovations don’t meet that quality despite their marketing. And iced coffee mania comes at a time when coffee production is at risk of surging prices as factors like climate change could slash the global supply. Almost a quarter of Americans enjoy their coffee cold, according to this fall’s National Coffee Data Trends report.

Gabbard and another contentious Trump pick — Pete Hegseth, who has been tapped to lead the Defense Department — came under sharpened scrutiny Sunday as the spotlight shifted from Matt Gaetz, Trump’s toppled choice to be attorney general. Trump’s pick of Hegseth is also facing uncertainty after the release last week of a 2017 police report detailing an alleged sexual assault in California. But the withdrawal of Gaetz — who was already widely disliked in Congress — may leave senators feeling they owe the president-elect on his other highly controversial choices. Trump’s new selection for attorney general, Pam Bondi, is meanwhile being welcomed by many Republicans, suggesting she’ll have an easier path to confirmation than Gaetz. But that would still leave the question of who is acceptable to Trump while being confirmable in the Senate.
