The contenders for San Francisco mayor are perfecting the pronunciation of their names in Cantonese. They are scrambling to recruit the best Chinese-speaking volunteers, in what one campaign manager described as a bona fide “arms race.”And they are grabbing any opportunity to meet with Chinese American voters in the city. “Now they almost never turn down an invitation to come, and they stay for the whole event,” Mr. Lee said with a chuckle. “They know that the Chinese vote is quite powerful now.”Nationally, Asian American voters often have to fight for attention because their numbers are still considered too few in most states for campaigns to invest heavily in outreach. But in San Francisco, where people of Chinese descent comprise more than one-fifth of the population, mayoral candidates believe that Chinese voters could decide the outcome in November.

People who have used Cash App accounts may be entitled to receive up to $2,500 each as part of a $15 million settlement related to a data breach involving the popular payments and investment platform, according to court documents and the company. The exposure of sensitive information for more than eight million users of Cash App Investing was revealed in a regulatory filing in 2022 by Block, its parent company. The data was exposed when a former employee downloaded corporate reports after leaving the company, according to the filing. A second breach involving more customers took place in 2023 with Cash App’s person-to-person payment services after the defendants failed to take security measures, according to a consolidated class-action complaint filed in February in United States District Court for the Northern District of California. It said that Block and Cash App were negligent in allowing unauthorized access to personal identification information, and that they mishandled complaints about the breaches and fraudulent transactions.

The Department is still working out the details of the plan, and will notify eligible borrowers soon. "Once these rules are finalized, 30 million Americans will get to benefit and experience the life-changing impact of student debt cancellation," said Aissa Canchola Bañez, policy director at the Student Borrower Protection Center. These are the four groups who stand to benefit from partial or full debt relief, if the plan survives the inevitable next round of lawsuits. Many student loan borrowers aren't aware of the relief options available to them, such as income-driven repayment plans and the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, consumer advocates say. The Education Department says it will look into when those underlying loans initially entered repayment.

I wasn't prepared for the reality of my teaching salary or complicated nature of interest on student loans. I'm 35 now and have a long, winding history with my student debt, from income-driven repayment plans, to in-school deferments, to the SAVE plan, which an appeals court just blocked. And with the lawsuits and delays, my $150,000 of worth of debt in private and federal loans is now in limbo. Stocks had a rough week, topped off with a pummeling Friday after the July jobs data came in weaker than expected. Until then, bad economic news was good news for the stock market, because it meant the Federal Reserve would start cutting interest rates sooner. On Thursday, a drop in U.S. manufacturing activity for July and a jump in initial jobless claims dragged down the market. Next week is light on economic data, so expect earnings reports and CEO commentaries to drive the market action. With AWS humming and management identifying more ways to lower its cost to serve, Amazon's profitability story is still intact. The company expects net sales of $154 billion to $158.5 billion, an increase of 8% to 11% year over year. The high end of guidance captures the consensus of $158.2 billion, but it's a miss on the analysts' consensus of $156.25 billion. In this photo illustration, bottles of Heineken beer are displayed on July 31, 2023 in San Anselmo, California. Heineken shares opened nearly 7% lower on Monday, after the brewing giant's first-half profit growth came in weaker than analysts had expected. In an update that had been keenly-awaited by analysts, Heineken revised its operating profit organic growth forecast for the year to a range between 4% to 8%. The major miss was in Europe, which saw just 0.2% profit growth versus an expectation of 15.1%, largely because of increased promotional spending in a competitive market, Barclays said. Heineken said it "consolidated leadership" in low and no-alcohol beer sales, with Heineken 0.0 — a no-alcohol beer — up 14%.

Harris opens up new potential paths to victorySince entering the race, Harris has shown momentum in early polling. This became worrisome for the Biden campaign as warning signs flashed in states like Virginia and New Hampshire. The positive early polling is a great sign for the vice president, but it isn't the only metric that shows momentum. Trump's pick for vice president makes things interestingVice presidential picks are far from guaranteed to help a presidential hopeful win a state. With Biden out of the race, Democrats will likely seek to tie the election — anchored by Harris' candidacy — to the party's future.

Democrats approve rules for likely Harris nomination
  + stars: | 2024-07-24 | by ( Ethan Cohen | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
CNN —Democrats on Wednesday adopted the rules the party will use to choose their presidential nominee, with voting to officially nominate Kamala Harris likely to begin August 1. That would be less than two weeks after President Joe Biden ended his campaign for reelection and endorsed his vice president, who quickly consolidated support within the party for her presidential bid. The party has said its goal is to nominate its presidential and vice presidential candidates by August 7 to avoid the possibility of litigation over ballot access in Ohio. After a presidential candidate is nominated, the rules allow the nominee to name a running mate without the need for additional remote voting. While the ceremonial presidential vote will be conducted as a roll call, the vote for vice president is likely to be a voice vote.

However, Schumer and Jeffries did not immediately endorse Harris, at first stating that they “look forward to meeting in person with Vice President Harris shortly as we collectively work to unify the Democratic Party and the country.”Many of Harris’ potential challengers, such as Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, endorsed the vice president, giving her a clear path to the nomination.

Nguyen Phu Trong, the hard-line general secretary of Vietnam’s Communist Party who presided over his country’s economic and geopolitical transformation, and reshaped its leadership with his “blazing furnace” anticorruption campaign, died on Friday at a hospital in Hanoi. His death was announced by the official Nhan Dan newspaper, which said that Mr. Trong had died of “old age” and an unspecified serious illness. Speculation had swirled in January about Mr. Trong’s health after he skipped meetings with several foreign leaders. For 12 years, Mr. Trong sat at the apex of power in Vietnam’s Communist hierarchy. He consolidated power in one of the world’s few remaining Communist dictatorships, significantly weakening the collective form of leadership that previously characterized the country’s Communist Party.
