CoreWeave, a startup that rents out Nvidia's artificial intelligence chips to other companies, said Wednesday that it closed a $650 million secondary share sale, with Cisco and Pure Storage investing alongside financial institutions. Bloomberg reported last month that CoreWeave was targeting a $23 billion valuation for the deal, up from $19 billion in a $1.1 billion investment round announced in May. Buy now, pay later firms like Klarna and Block's Afterpay could be about to face tougher rules in the U.K.Klarna, which is known for its popular buy now, pay later business, announced Wednesday that it's confidentially filed IPO documents with the SEC. The company said the offering would follow the SEC's review process and is subject to market conditions. Analysts recently valued Klarna, which was founded in 2005, in the $15 billion range. U.S. and Canadian banks reported a tenfold surge in digital scams this year as criminals flock to techniques that rely on duping customers into sending them money, according to cybersecurity firm BioCatch. Banks are under pressure to kick criminals off their platforms and compensate more victims as regulators and lawmakers focus on the harm done by digital scams. Customers of the three banks reported a combined $166 million in Zelle transactions were fraudulent in 2023. BioCatch declined to provide a specific number for reported scams, citing client confidentiality. In another sign of the cat-and-mouse dynamic of cybercrime, BioCatch clients reported 59% fewer fraudulent account openings.

Amazon has rolled out a new storefront featuring apparel, home goods, electronics and other items priced below $20, to fend off growing competition from discount upstarts Temu and Shein. Called "Amazon Haul," the storefront is accessible through the company's mobile app, and promises "crazy low prices" on a plethora of goods. CNBC previously reported that Amazon planned to launch its own discount webstore with goods shipped directly from China. With Amazon Haul, the company is responding to the rise of Temu, Shein and TikTok Shop, which all have ties to China, the world's second-largest economy. Amazon is able to offer low prices through its Haul storefront by importing each item directly from manufacturers in China, similar to how Temu's and Shein's business models operate.

A Wall Street Journal report Tuesday evening said a bankruptcy filing is expected to happen within weeks, as talks with Frontier Airlines to possibly buy Spirit (SAVE) broke down recently. Because of those discussions, the company said, Spirit is unable able to complete its third-quarter financial report by the prescribed time. While Spirit management tried to move ahead with the Frontier deal, its shareholders rejected the offer and Spirit ultimately agreed to the JetBlue deal instead. It argued such a combination would hurt airline passengers because it would reduce the number of inexpensive airline tickets — putting upward pressure on airfares overall. In January 2024 a federal judge agreed with DOJ’s argument and blocked the JetBlue deal.

HONG KONG — Businesses and consumers in China found the annual Singles’ Day shopping festival less attractive this year due to a sluggish economy, forcing e-commerce firms to look abroad for growth. While Singles’ Day was previously a one-day event, shopping platforms in China now kickstart the festival weeks ahead to drum up sales volume. But amid China’s lagging domestic economy, dragged down by a real estate crisis and deflationary pressures, consumers no longer go all out during the shopping extravaganza. Wang said that the prices offered on e-commerce platforms during Singles’ Day are not necessarily cheaper than usual. “I used to buy a lot two or three years ago and I even purchased a mobile phone (during Singles’ Day),” he said.

TGI Fridays said the main reasons for filing for bankruptcy were financial challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic and a flawed capital structure.

Donald Trump's election victory last week is already having an effect on global supply chains. While many firms are waiting to see what Trump's trade policies will be, some are moving ahead. From medical supplies to consumer products, several companies are getting an early start to changing their supply chains. Several companies, however, aren't waiting to make changes to their supply chains. Fortune Brands, which owns a portfolio of home products brands like Moen plumbing fixtures and Yale locks, has been rethinking its supply chain since Trump's tariffs in 2017.

But its more serious problems – ongoing massive losses, quality and safety problems – are as bad as ever, and could even get worse. Renewed problems in ChinaAmong the most serious problems Boeing faces is President-elect Donald Trump’s promise to impose large tariffs on imports from China. “There needs to be a full accounting for everything they do.”Need for new planesAnd there’s yet more mess Boeing needs to sort out. Ortberg told investors last month that Boeing needs to reduce its portfolio and repair its balance sheet so that Boeing has “a path to the next commercial aircraft.”The good news for Boeing is it is in little danger of going out of business, despite its many problems. And Airbus has a backlog of orders stretching back years, as does Boeing, so airline customers can not easily switch orders from one to the other.

The subscription service also came into effect after regional regulators fined the company over $400 million for violating EU data privacy laws. "The changes we're announcing today meet EU regulator demands and go beyond what's required by EU law," Meta President Nick Clegg said Tuesday on Threads.
