“The Coliseum was like the Polo Grounds had been in the National League, very short down each line and deep in the outfield. So it was not so much of a shock to pitch in the Coliseum, because it reminded all of us of the Polo Grounds. His identity is his comment: positive thinking. In fact, he wrote a book, ‘The Power of Positive Thinking,’ and it’s a powerful book. And I think he’s right.”

The A’s, with a roster gutted of any recognizable players over the last few seasons, were expected to be terrible this season and spent more than two months on pace to shatter the 1962 Mets’ modern era record for losses in a season. Their play has recently picked up, with the team taking a fairly shocking six-game win streak into Tuesday night’s game against the Rays, which they continued with a 2-1 win over the best team in baseball. In a rare sight, the Coliseum, which had averaged a major league-low 8,555 fans a game entering the game, was packed on Tuesday with a season-best crowd of 27,759, many of whom were wearing green T-shirts that said “Sell” across the chest as part of a planned protest. “I’ve been to only one game this year. “They want the ownership to sell the team so they can remain in Oakland.”But should Nevada approve public funds toward a new stadium, the hopes of building a new park in Oakland, at Howard Terminal or elsewhere, would likely vanish, even as the city of Oakland has worked to keep the door open.

Built in the multipurpose stadium craze of the 1960s, Oakland Coliseum was quirky from the start. Feral cats, leaking sewage and a possum that lives in one of the television booths wouldn’t come along until later. Unpopular changes to the stadium at the behest of the Oakland Raiders of the N.F.L. The maintenance of the park became unmanageable, and the team’s various owners consistently complained about the lack of amenities. The team averaged only 9,849 fans a game last season, and things are even worse this year, at 8,874.
Ron DeSantis officially launched his presidential campaign Wednesday, putting his blend of pro-business conservativism and culture-war populism to the test at the national level. In the most recent legislative session, DeSantis signed a bill that stopped union dues from being automatically deducted from public employees' paychecks. Ron DeSantis, a critic of environmentally sensitive investing, didn't succeed in protecting his constituents from the ravages of Hurricane Ian, which may have been intensified by global warming. Official promo video for Italy tourism features Slovenia

ROME, April 25 (Reuters) - Italy's tourism ministry has faced ridicule after an official video to attract tourists to Italy used footage of people in Slovenia drinking Slovenian wine. Art historian Tomaso Montanari called the advertising campaign "grotesque", and an "obscene" waste of money, while the video was lampooned by users of Italian social media platforms. The most controversial footage shows a group of young people smiling on a sunlit patio drinking wine in what is presented as a typical Italian scene. The Armando Testa communications group was not immediately available to comment. Italian Tourism Minister Daniela Santanche, a member of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's far-right Brothers of Italy party, called critics of the video "snobs" and said the depiction of Venus as an influencer was aimed at attracting young people.

Republican Florida state Sen. Blaise Ingoglia warned Disney not to fight back, as he stood next to DeSantis at a news conference Monday. At the same event, DeSantis vowed to nullify an agreement that would allow the Orlando amusement park to circumvent a special governing district board filled with DeSantis appointees.

Athletics president Dave Kaval said the team was pushing ahead with plans for a new stadium in Las Vegas after the process to build a waterfront ballpark in Oakland stalled. "We have a pact in Las Vegas that we think can work and has the support from the league, so we are really putting all our focus in Las Vegas and the efforts there." MLB is the latest major sport league eager to get in on the Las Vegas action. "In 2021, given the continued lack of progress, MLB instructed the A's to explore a parallel path plan with Las Vegas. "We support the A’s turning their focus on Las Vegas and look forward to them bringing finality to this process by the end of the year."
SWEETWATER, Texas, March 22 (Reuters) - The Texas town of Sweetwater claims fame as home to the world's largest annual "rattlesnake roundup," where thousands of pounds of slithering venomous snakes are forced out of their dens and put on display. But the Sweetwater Rattlesnake Roundup, which dates back to 1958, is drawing criticism - not just for the killing, but also for the method employed to draw out the snakes: hunters inject gasoline into rocky crevices where the serpents spend the colder months. A recent Ally Financial ad buy with Disney 's ESPN focused on women's sports may be the biggest deal yet — in importance as much as the dollars attached. The one-year, multimillion-dollar deal requires 90% of its investment to be put to women's sports, through expanding game highlights, branded content and features across ESPN. "It is rare that brands buy media deals, or buy sponsorship deals, where they are as skewed toward women's sports as this one," she said. The Denver Coliseum offers cots to help homeless people escape outdoor temperatures that have dropped to as low as minus 8 degrees. Temperatures dived to minus 8 degrees Thursday morning, down from 50 on Wednesday. The Seattle region is also opening warming centers across King County, including overnight shelters for families experiencing homelessness. San Antonio will also open warming centers.
