The trial in the New York hush money case against former President Donald Trump has been delayed until the middle of April, Judge Juan Merchan ruled Friday. Merchan said the trial — originally scheduled to begin March 25 — would be pushed back 30 days from Friday. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg had previously said he would support the trial being delayed 30 days, into late April. He had made clear he wasn't interested in postponing the trial, as Trump's lawyers had requested. Trump faces 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to the hush money payments to Daniels.

Trump's felony hush money trial had been scheduled to begin March 25 in Manhattan. Talk of delay was triggered by federal prosecutors producing 73,000 pages of long-awaited evidence. AdvertisementDonald Trump's felony hush money trial, long scheduled to begin March 25, may be delayed by a month or longer due to federal officials' last-minute production of 73,000 pages of evidence concerning their 2018 prosecution of Michael Cohen. The defense has only dragged its feet in seeking the same evidence, prosecutors said. The assistant prosecutor blamed the late, ongoing evidence dump — and the resulting need for a delay — on federal prosecutors and the Trump defense.

light of the distinctive circumstances described below, the People do not oppose a brief adjournment of up to 30 days to permit sufficient time for defendant to review the USAO productions. Yesterday afternoon, however, the USAO produced approximately 31,000 pages of additional records to both the People and the defense in response to defendant's subpoena, and also indicated that an additional production would follow by next week. We note that the timing of the current production of additional materials from the USAO is a function of defendant's own delay. In response, the USAO produced a subset of the materials we requested, which we timely and fully disclosed to defendant on June 8, 2023, more than nine months ago. Despite having access to those materials since June, defendant raised no concerns to the People about the sufficiency of our efforts to obtain materials from the USAO before last week; instead, defendant waited until January 18, 2
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg speaks during a news conference at his office in New York City on Feb. 22, 2024. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg on Thursday told a judge that he does not oppose postponing the start of the criminal hush money trial of former President Donald Trump by up to 30 days. The DA told Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Juan Merchan that his prosecution team is prepared to start Trump's trial on March 25 as currently scheduled. Another production of documents from federal prosecutors is due next week, Bragg said. Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said in a statement that Bragg agreed to a delay "after conceding serious discovery violations."

House Republican Conference Chair Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) speaks during a news conference following a weekly House Republican caucus conference meeting at the U.S. Capitol Building on January 19, 2022 in Washington, DC. House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik on Tuesday urged Attorney General Merrick Garland to investigate whether Donald Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen perjured himself in testimony to Congress. Cohen's testimony in both settings centered on his claims of financial wrongdoing by Trump. "Mr. Cohen's prior conviction for lying to Congress merits a heightened suspicion that he has yet again testified falsely before Congress," the Republicans wrote. Speaking to reporters outside the courtroom when the trial ended for the day, Trump called Cohen a "disgraceful fellow." Trump doubled down Wednesday during a mid-morning break, saying Cohen "went to jail for lying" and branding him "a totally discredited witness." In his first day on the stand, Cohen had accused Trump of directing him and another Trump Organization executive to falsely inflate the values of his assets on financial statements. But Trump's attorney Alina Habba grilled Cohen on cross-examination, highlighting his 2018 guilty plea on charges including lying to Congress. Cohen, Trump's once-loyal aide, is now a star witness against him in James' trial in Manhattan Supreme Court. Judge Arthur Engoron, who will deliver verdicts in the no-jury trial, has already found Trump liable for fraud and ordered the cancellation of the defendants' New York business certificates.

NEW YORK (AP) — Michael Cohen returned to the witness stand Wednesday in his ex-boss Donald Trump's civil business fraud trial as the former president's defense team tried to undermine the credibility and question the motives of his onetime personal attorney turned adversary. She tried to suggest that Cohen had angled unsuccessfully for a job in Trump’s White House — Cohen insisted he never sought one — and asked whether he had “significant animosity" toward Trump. Cohen is a key witness in New York Attorney General Letitia James’ civil case against Trump. Cohen is also expected to be an important prosecution witness in a criminal trial scheduled for next spring in which Trump is accused of falsifying business records. That case is one of four criminal prosecutions Trump faces in New York, Florida, Georgia and Washington.

But for Trump, Ellis' plea was especially damaging, since it underscored the steady evaporation of something Trump has demanded from staff and associates since his days as a New York businessman: loyalty. "If I knew then what I know now, I would have declined to represent Donald Trump in these post-election challenges. The three former Trump lawyers who pleaded guilty in Georgia were facing some serious potential consequences, he noted, including not just time behind bars but the loss of their law licenses – and that may take priority over honoring Trump's demands for loyalty. Michael Cohen, the former personal lawyer and fixer for Donald Trump, is set to begin testifying Tuesday in the $250 million fraud trial of the former president and his company. Trump was in court for two days last week, when Cohen was first expected to be called to testify.
