China's artificial intelligence evolution is at an "inflection point" — and the country is catching up with the U.S., according to Morgan Stanley. Morgan Stanley, in a separate note, flagged Baidu in particular as the best AI play in China, and the "most obvious beneficiary" of the $7.4 trillion AI opportunity in China. Baidu, China's largest search engine, owns the most extensive proprietary search data — and it's essential for the development of AI-generated content, Morgan Stanley noted. Morgan Stanley predicts that growth will be close to 50% in the next three to five years. Morgan Stanley gave Baidu a target price of $190, or 35% potential upside.

The stock has basically tripled year to date in the artificial intelligence-driven enthusiasm that has recently been gripping Wall Street. The analysts also increased their price target to $500 per share from $472 following discussions with CFO Colette Kress at a recent conference. Bernstein appears to echo this near-term bullish view on Nvidia, reiterating its outperform (buy) rating and $475-per-share price target. Evercore derived its price target by assuming 25x that $30 figure and discounting back to calendar year 2024, using a 10% discount rate . Apple and Nvidia are both "hold it, don't trade it" stocks. But what we can say is that "own it, don't trade it" doesn't mean that you should never, under any circumstances, sell shares. Consider the case of Apple (AAPL), our long-held "don't trade" name. Apple and Nvidia (NVDA) are both based in the United States and are considered mega-cap tech stocks. Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (9988.HK) said last month it would slash prices for some cloud products by up to 50%. Wei Yunfeng, a researcher at data firm IDC, said the price cuts were triggered in part by high sales targets despite slowing growth for the market. Alibaba's cloud revenue accounts for about 9% of its total revenue. James Mitchell, Tencent's chief strategy officer, told analysts on a call: "The impact of price cuts on Tencent as a whole is not notable." Moreover, price cuts only apply to its infrastructure-as-a-service business, which represent only a portion of Tencent's cloud services.
HONG KONG, May 17 (Reuters) - Chinese internet giant Tencent Holdings (0700.HK) is cutting prices for cloud services by up to 40% from June amid similar moves from rivals that have plunged the sector into a price war. Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (9988.HK) said last month it will slash prices for some cloud products by up to 50%. Charlie Chai, an analyst at 86Research, said Chinese cloud service providers had in the past made efforts to avert a price war but "at the end of the day they still went down this path". Alibaba's cloud revenue accounts for about 9% of its total revenue. Tencent does not break out separate figures for cloud revenue.
BRUSSELS, May 9 (Reuters) - Amazon (AMZN.O), Alphabet's (GOOGL.O) Google, Microsoft (MSFT.O) and other non-European Union cloud service providers looking to secure an EU cybersecurity label to handle sensitive data can only do so via a joint venture with an EU-based company, according to an EU draft document seen by Reuters. The document adds the cloud service must be operated and maintained from the EU, and all cloud service customer data stored and processed in the EU and that EU laws take precedence over non-EU laws regarding the cloud service provider. The latest draft proposal from EU cybersecurity agency ENISA concerns an EU certification scheme (EUCS) that would vouch for the cybersecurity of cloud services and determine how governments and companies in the bloc select a vendor for their business. The latest draft could fragment the EU single market as each country has full discretion to impose the requirements whenever it sees fit, an industry source said. EU countries will review the draft later this month after which the European Commission will adopt a final scheme.

Super Micro Computer forecasts per-share adjusted earnings between $2.21 and $2.71 in its fourth quarter, greater than the $1.76 consensus estimate from FactSet.
WASHINGTON, April 26 (Reuters) - U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said on Wednesday that Chinese cloud computing companies like Huawei Cloud and Alibaba Cloud (9988.HK) could pose a threat to U.S. security and vowed to review a request to add them to an export control list. A group of nine Republican senators on Tuesday urged the Biden administration to impose sanctions on Huawei Technologies Co's (HWT.UL) cloud unit, Alibaba Cloud and other Chinese cloud service providers. They want Raimondo to add the companies to the Entity List, which imposes U.S. export controls on foreign companies. Raimondo said the Chinese cloud companies could pose a threat. In May 2019, the Commerce Department added Huawei to the export control list over U.S. security concerns.
WASHINGTON, April 25 (Reuters) - A group of nine Republican senators on Tuesday urged the Biden administration to impose sanctions on Huawei Cloud and other Chinese cloud service providers, citing national security concerns, according to a letter seen by Reuters. The senators said Huawei Cloud launched its "Sky Computing Constellation" in co-sponsorship with Changsha Tianyi Space Science and Technology Research Institute also known as "Spacety China" in 2021. Alibaba Cloud, a subsidiary of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (9988.HK), did not immediately comment. Reuters reported in January 2022 that the Biden administration was reviewing the cloud business of e-commerce giant Alibaba to determine whether it poses a risk to U.S. national security. The letter said the Biden administration should consider further investigation or actions against China’s other cloud service providers including Baidu Cloud and Tencent Cloud which may impact U.S. national security.
"We believe there's more earnings upside vs market expectations in FY24e and beyond," he said in a note to clients Tuesday. "Nvidia's incredible AI pricing power (is) not fully priced in," Lee said. He said the AI business should be able to more than offset weakening datacenter demand and Wall Street was "too focused" on the later before. But he raised his earnings expectations in the 2024 and 2025 fiscal years. "We acknowledge we underestimated the potential of Nvidia's AI business and speed of ramp-up post Microsoft 's ChatGPT launch," he said.

That has poured more fuel on an arms race that has been going on for years in AI. Today, the device is barely functional after the company shut off a host of services last year. The largest cloud service providers, or hyper-scalers, today each have millions of servers in data centers scattered across the country. The company produces network switches for large data centers that enable connectivity between devices in a network.
Ex-Greylock GP Sarah Guo surprised the tech world when she launched her AI fund Conviction last year. In addition to her fund, Guo has gained prominence in SF's AI scene through her podcast and events. Kovalsky knew of only one person who could be behind this — Sarah Guo, then a general partner at VC firm Greylock. Within the tech community, Guo has differentiated herself from other VCs through her honesty, business savvy, and grit, they added. Although Guo launched Conviction, a $100 million fund investing up to Series A, in late 2022, her interest in artificial intelligence has been long in the making.
BRUSSELS, March 28 (Reuters) - Microsoft (MSFT.O) has offered to change its cloud computing practices to settle antitrust complaints filed by its smaller rivals, a person with direct knowledge of the matter said on Tuesday, a move that will stave off an EU investigation. French cloud computing services provider OVHcloud (OVH.PA), Italian cloud service provider Aruba and a Danish association of cloud service providers had complained to the European Commission about Microsoft's cloud practices and licensing deals. Microsoft said: "We are grateful for the productive conversations that led us there and appreciate the feedback that we have received since." Trade group CISPE, which counts cloud computing market leader Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) as one of its members, said it was not part of the settlement. Reuters reported last week that rivals wanted Microsoft to do more to resolve their complaints after an initial offer fell short.

Nvidia reported $1.83 billion in fourth-quarter gaming revenue, a 46% drop from the same time last year. Nvidia also said that it shipped fewer chips for game consoles during the quarter, which is also reported inside the gaming category. Other categories, including professional visualization and automotive chips, remain much smaller than the company's gaming and data center businesses.

The current buzz surrounding artificial intelligence is here to stay, creating plenty of trading opportunities as the technology grows, according to Morgan Stanley analyst Shawn Kim. However, the hype around generative AI may be justified and the technology feels genuinely exciting," Kim said in a note on Tuesday. Morgan Stanley anticipates that increased demand for computer power needed for AI training will lead to rapidly growing markets for graphics and central processing units. In the generative AI world, "the raw material is data; the user of that material is hyperscale data centers; the enabling workhorse is semiconductors," wrote Kim. GDS "has more balanced exposure to all internet companies," Kim said, adding that its "valuation is more reasonable."
BRUSSELS, Feb 9 (Reuters) - A key committee at the European Parliament on Thursday agreed to stringent safeguards to prevent non-EU governments from gaining illegal access to EU data, drawing criticism from a tech lobbying group. EU concerns about data transfers have grown since former U.S. intelligence contractor Edward Snowden in 2013 revealed mass U.S. surveillance. The committee introduced safeguards against unlawful international data transfer by cloud service providers and set stricter conditions on business-to-government data requests. Tech trade association ITI said lawmakers may be going too far with provisions restricting transfers of non-personal data that exceed those set out under EU privacy rules for personal data. "Data flows are the backbone of the digital economy and allow companies to reach consumers and access new markets.
The Treasury report also said that financial institutions want to see more transparency from their cloud service providers about the details of cyber incidents. WASHINGTON—The Treasury Department is warning about potential vulnerabilities caused by financial institutions relying on a small number of providers for cloud-computing services, convening a group of U.S. officials to study the issue. The Treasury said in a report to be released Wednesday that banks and other financial institutions are increasingly using remote computing services known as the cloud, part of a broader shift in how businesses manage their technology needs. Many are using these services for software such as email, and a smaller number are relying on it for more sensitive infrastructure such as data storage.

ChatGPT — an artificial intelligence-powered chatbot — is having a viral moment, offering a high-profile glimpse at the maturing technology's capabilities. Like other GPT models, ChatGPT can generate text in a variety of styles and formats, including responses to questions, descriptions, and even entire conversations. The growth of Azure is central to our long-term investment thesis in Microsoft, and artificial intelligence is playing an increasingly prominent role in cloud computing. Additionally, Club holding Alphabet is no stranger to artificial intelligence — and, more specifically, machine learning. While all three models — ChatGPT, Sparrow and LaMDA — have their differences, they share a foundational network architecture known as Transformer.
