How different a commander in chief will Trump be?

On the face of it, there are sizable differences in foreign policy between Trump and President Joe Biden. In October, the Biden administration again helped to intercept a barrage of around 200 Iranian ballistic missiles, which also caused minimal damage to targets in Israel. Bringing US troops homeIn 2020, the Trump administration signed a US withdrawal agreement from Afghanistan with the Taliban. But after McMaster was pushed out of office in 2018, the Trump administration negotiated with the Taliban the withdrawal agreement of all US forces from Afghanistan. Nonetheless, the incoming Trump administration seems intent on resurrecting Schedule F, an executive order issued in the last months of the first Trump term.

Standing on a dirt path with lush palms and other foliage behind him, Biden described the fight against climate change as a “defining” part of his presidency. And he pledged billions to help nations bolster resilience against climate change. President Joe Biden, in Marine One, takes part in an aerial tour of the Amazon during his visit to Manaus, Brazil, on November 17, 2024. Trump has already vowed to withdraw again from the Paris climate accord, which Biden entered back into when he took office four years ago. CNN —There’s nothing quite like the mouthwatering taste of real Prosciutto di Parma, known the world over as Parma ham. The end result is that Parma ham as we know it is increasingly hard to find on international dinner plates. Unlike many heavily mechanized meat processing industries, Parma ham production is steeped in history and tradition. But they are nowhere to be seen, essentially kept under lockdown to protect them from the swine fever virus. SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — In the months leading up to Election Day, political signs and billboards dotted much of the landscape surrounding this town in southwestern Ohio. Residents, tired and frustrated after their hometown became a national flashpoint in the election over immigration, were trying to move past the intense scrutiny and refocus on the future. We have to live with it,” Jean Philistin, a Haitian resident of Springfield, said of Donald Trump’s victory. After the election, NBC News returned to the town and spoke with more than a dozen residents who offered a mix of hope and fear about the weeks, months and years to come. Mostly, they were hesitant to talk about the election even after its decisive conclusion.

CNN —For Democratic pro-Palestinian activists, Donald Trump’s reelection delivered a bitter vindication. CNN —President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday named Chris Wright, the CEO of Denver-based fracking company Liberty Energy, as his pick to be the next secretary of the Department of Energy. Wright will also serve as a member on the newly formed Council of National Energy, which Trump said will consist of all agencies involved in the “permitting, production, generation, distribution, regulation, transportation” of energy. In addition to his company’s work on fracking oil and natural gas, Wright also sits on the board of a modular nuclear reactor company and has talked about the potential of nuclear energy. Developing nuclear energy has become a big focus of the Biden administration’s Energy Department. “Standing in the way of today’s energy system before we’ve built a new energy system, there’s just no upside in that,” Wright told CNBC.

Beneath the snowy slopes lay a prehistoric surprise: an ecosystem that predates the dinosaurs, revealed by melting snow before being stumbled upon by a hiker in the Italian Alps. Intrigued, she snapped photos and shared them with her friend, Elio Della Ferrera, a nature photographer. Della Ferrera then contacted Dal Sasso, at the museum in Milan, to learn more about the discovery. These environmental shifts contributed to the extinction of many species, which we may now encounter as fossils on a fortunate hike. “The past has much to teach us about what we risk doing to the world today,” the researchers warned.

While Kamala Harris made history, Vivek Ramaswamy became a household name, and Usha Vance debuted to a tepid national audience, many everyday South Asian Americans were experiencing something altogether different. As these political leaders saw their profiles rise, everyday South Asian Americans experienced increased racism, with anti-South Asian posts online doubling over the campaign season, a new report found. Threats of violence against Asian Americans are up 17% from the baseline, and a vast majority of those threats were directed at South Asian Americans, the data revealed. WASHINGTON — When President Joe Biden relinquishes power in January, some parts of his legacy will be secure, while others may be undone by President-elect Donald Trump and a new Republican-controlled Congress. The pieces of Biden’s legacy go into four buckets. But it will be difficult for Trump to undo bipartisan legislation, such as measures about infrastructure and preventing gun violence, and the judges Biden appointed can’t be unseated. Biden’s immigration orders are ripe for Trump to target after he ran on a platform of mass deportations and clamping down on border security. Bipartisan Biden-era bills (largely safe)The parts of Biden’s legacy that will be relatively safe are the bipartisan laws he passed, which are subject to filibusters and therefore give Democrats the power to protect them.

Extraordinary circumstances have degraded 40% of global land iStockCertain places around the world are already experiencing this at an accelerated rate. And that’s just one state; at present rates, land degradation threatens half of the global GDP. The Economics of Land Degradation also estimated that each dollar invested into land restoration will return up to $30 in value. The threat of land degradation is a shared burden. According to projections from The Associated Press, Republicans flipped control of the Michigan state House, padded their narrow majorities in the New Hampshire state House and Senate, and maintained their majority in the Pennsylvania state Senate. In Arizona, Republicans appeared poised to expand their narrow majorities in the state House and state Senate, though the AP hasn’t yet called enough races to make that determination. In many districts in both states, Democrats had centered their message on the accomplishments the party achieved with that power. Democrats, however, maintained their 102-101 majority in the Pennsylvania state House — the only bright spot for the party in state legislative chambers where partisan control had been at stake. In addition, Republicans’ victories in state legislative races came even as Democratic groups massively outspent them.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm speaks to the media on day five at the UNFCCC COP29 Climate Conference on November 15, 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan. A potential decision by Donald Trump to walk back the Biden administration's climate-geared projects would impact jobs in areas governed by the President-elect's own party, outgoing U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm told CNBC, urging consistency in Washington's green transition policies. "We are now building all of these projects. We're building batteries for electric vehicles, we're building the vehicles, we're building the offshore wind turbines, we're building the solar panels.
