Her death was announced on social media by her daughter, Manuela Papatakis, who said her mother died at home in Paris. But it was with “A Man and a Woman,” a 28-year-old director’s low-budget project that went on to win the Oscar for best foreign film, that she created the image that endured throughout her career. Ms. Aimée was nominated for a best actress Oscar for the role. It also brought her the BAFTA film award for best foreign actress and the Golden Globe for best motion picture actress.

I'm a security expert and a vice president of engineering at a content management system company, which has Netflix, Tesla, and Adidas among its clients. Here are four things I would keep in mind when interacting with AI chatbots like OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, Anthropic's Claude, or Perplexity AI. Follow company AI guidelinesAs using AI in the workplace becomes common for tasks like coding or analysis, it is crucial to follow your company's AI policy. As AI chatbots become more humanlike, we are swayed to share more and open up to topics we would not have before. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman (L) speaks with Microsoft Chief Technology Officer and Executive VP of Artificial Intelligence Kevin Scott during the Microsoft Build conference at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Washington, on May 21, 2024. The Federal Trade Commission and the Justice Department are set to open antitrust investigations into Microsoft , OpenAI and Nvidia , examining the powerful companies' influence on the artificial intelligence industry, a source familiar confirmed to CNBC. The FTC will take the lead on looking into Microsoft and OpenAI, while the DOJ will focus on Nvidia, and the investigations will focus on the companies' conduct, rather than mergers and acquisitions, according to the source. The news also follows the FTC's January decision to conduct an extensive study on AI industry heavyweights, including Amazon , Alphabet , Microsoft, Anthropic and OpenAI. Microsoft and OpenAI did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

No one is laughing about Jayshree's company, either, as her white box solutions are beating Cisco Systems when it comes to the internet plumbing that connect Nvidia chips to the Titans. Last year at this time, Nvidia snuck into the U.S. trillion-dollar market cap club, with that May quarter. What does Nvidia really have to do then for an encore? Now we are getting into what Jensen does to beat expectations. Tall order, but Nvidia is a company that's beaten tall orders routinely we just didn't really know it until last May.

‘Babes’ Review: Adulting, With Babies
  + stars: | 2024-05-16 | by ( Alissa Wilkinson | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Alas: That’s what happened with “Babes.” The elements that promised joy were all there, starting with two very funny comic talents in Ilana Glazer and Michelle Buteau. There’s a screenplay by Glazer and Josh Rabinowitz, who was a producer on “Broad City,” the kooky, beloved show in which Glazer co-starred. But sometimes a pile of good ingredients doesn’t make something delicious, and I guess that’s what happened here. The marketing for “Babes” suggests something akin to “Bridesmaids,” the runaway 2011 hit that reminded Hollywood that raunchy comedies starring women can be hilarious and profitable. Dawn and Marty’s second baby is born on Thanksgiving Day, and on the way home from the hospital Eden meets Claude (Stephan James) on the subway.

Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger will join artificial intelligence firm Anthropic as chief product officer, the company announced Wednesday. He and Instagram's other co-founder, Kevin Systrom, most recently built the personalized news app Artifact and sold it to Yahoo. Around this time last year, Anthropic had only rolled out the first version of its chatbot without any consumer access or major fanfare. News of Krieger's hiring follows Anthropic's debut of its first enterprise offering and iOS app earlier this month. And in March, Anthropic announced Claude 3, a suite of AI models that it says are its fastest and most powerful yet.

Discover Le Havre, Where Impressionism Was Born
  + stars: | 2024-05-10 | by ( Elaine Sciolino | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
As the fog of dawn lifted one morning in mid-November 1872, Claude Monet looked out the window of his hotel room in the French city of Le Havre and furiously painted his vision of its industrial harbor. He flung his brush with quick strokes and played with the water, stretching it with rays of color. In one sitting, he created “Impression, Sunrise,” a painting of a vivid orange sun with its reflection shimmering in the sea. In 1874, Monet, who grew up in Le Havre on the Normandy coast, included the painting in an exhibition of 30 artists’ work organized in response to the Paris Salon, an annual showcase of academic art. “I thought to myself, this has made an impression on me so there must be impressions somewhere in there.”

The AI startup says it is rolling out the ability to fine-tune its Command R AI model, allowing it to outperform larger models like GPT-4 in some use cases while costing up to fifteen times less to operate. Similarly, when analyzing financial data Command R was 6.2% more accurate than GPT-4 and 5.3% more accurate than Claude. Matt Calkins, CEO and co-founder of Appian, said that though internet giants like Microsoft , Amazon , and Google are spending billions on the tech, ensuring success in AI is "not just about money." "AI is not a place where money makes more money," Calkins told CNBC in an interview at its London bureau on Tuesday. Microsoft has struck a similar deal with Mistral, taking a 15 million euro ($16 million) stake in the French AI firm. Separately, Amazon has invested a whopping $4 billion into U.S. AI firm Anthropic, which is behind the Claude AI system. "The best AI will be the AI you put your data into, not whoever bought the biggest stack," he said.

The generative artificial intelligence startup is the company behind Claude, one of the chatbots that, like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google 's Gemini, has exploded in popularity in the past year. Anthropic's first iOS app is free for users across all plans and also available starting Wednesday. In a release Wednesday, Anthropic confirmed that other current clients using Claude include Pfizer, Asana, Zoom, Perplexity AI, Bridgewater Associates and more currently. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said training AI could one day cost $100 billion. Amodei told CNBC that he isn't worried about the commoditization of large language AI models. Amodei told CNBC that current models already cost a company $100 million to develop — and that price will only increase as the technology advances. Over the last two weeks, major cloud providers Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet have reported quarterly earnings that exceeded Wall Street's expectations. Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet's shares also climbed after earnings were reported, evidence that doubling down on their AI strategies seems to be paying off. Microsoft Cloud generated $35.1 billion in revenue — up 23% year-over-year — that CEO Satya Nadella credits partly to investments into AI tools like Microsoft Copilot.
