Well, a new Google ad says artificial intelligence can now do that for you. It shows the young girl training to compete like her hero, thanks to hurdling technique tips generated by Google’s AI search feature. But many early AI tools seem to do the opposite, instead enabling computers to generate traditionally human creative outputs such as art, music and stories. And yet tech firms have forged ahead with rolling out AI tools that can create new emojis, speak and even generate videos. Google did not respond to CNN’s request for comment regarding the backlash to the Gemini ad.

New York CNN —OpenAI on Thursday announced its most direct threat yet to its stalwart Big Tech rivals: a search engine that uses artificial intelligence baked in from the beginning. The company is testing SearchGPT, which will combine its AI technology with real-time information from the web to allow people to search for information in the same way they talk to ChatGPT. While the search engine is currently in an early test for a limited number of users, OpenAI said it plans to integrate the tools into ChatGPT in the future. SearchGPT could also pose a threat to Microsoft’s Bing, the also-ran search engine player that last year incorporated OpenAI’s own technology in an effort to better compete with Google. However, OpenAI said Thursday that it partnered with publishers to build the tool and give them options to “manage how they appear” in SearchGPT’s results.

New York CNN —Vivian Jenna Wilson, Elon Musk’s estranged daughter, publicly refuted several recent anti-trans statements her Tesla CEO and X owner father has made about her. After her transition, the billionaire said, he “vowed to destroy the woke mind virus.”Musk has previously been criticized for his anti-trans comments. Musk has previously spoken about his daughter, including in the authorized biography written by journalist Walter Isaacson and published last year. In the book, the billionaire blamed his daughter’s transition in part on her time at a progressive, Los Angeles school. In the Peterson interview, Musk said he considers his child “dead” following her transition.

New York CNN —Meta failed to remove an explicit, AI-generated image of an Indian public figure until it was questioned by its Oversight Board, the board said Thursday in a report that calls on the tech giant to do more to address non-consensual, nude deepfakes on its platforms. The report is the result of an investigation the Meta Oversight Board announced in April into Meta’s handling of deepfake pornography, including two specific instances where explicit images were posted of an American public figure and an Indian public figure. But in the case of the Indian public figure, although the image was twice reported to Meta, the company did not remove the image from Instagram until the Oversight Board took up the case. “Meta determined that its original decision to leave the content on Instagram was in error and the company removed the post for violating the Bullying and Harassment Community Standard,” the Oversight Board said in its report. The push to fight non-consensual deepfakes is just part of Meta’s larger efforts to prevent the sexual exploitation of its users.

Despite her friendly relationships with the industry’s leaders, Harris has also pushed for tech accountability in key areas. As vice president, Harris has taken a key role in the White House around establishing safety measures for artificial intelligence, which is widely viewed as the most consequential new technology in decades. Peter Welch, a Democrat from Vermont. “In light of this guilty verdict, Senator Menendez must now do what is right for his constituents, the Senate, and our country, and resign,” Schumer said in a statement. But advancements in AI technology are already beginning to remove the need for volunteer helpers on the other end. Applications for blind users are just one area where AI is helping to advance what’s known as “assistive technology,” tools designed to help people who are disabled or elderly. New generative AI tools are especially promising for accessibility applications because they’re designed to understand and produce information in various formats, including text, audio, photos and videos. The effort, called the Speech Accessibility Project, involves collecting recordings from volunteers with conditions such as Parkinsons, Down Syndrome, ALS and other disabilities that can affect speech. “We don’t want to leave people behind … technology in general has the ability to level the playing field,” Andersson said.

AI systems need lots of computers to make them work. The end result has been that Google’s greenhouse gas emissions have soared 48% since 2019, according to the tech giant’s annual environment report. An October study from Dutch researcher Alex de Vries estimated that the “worst-case scenario” suggests Google’s AI systems could eventually consume as much electricity as the country of Ireland each year, assuming a full-scale adoption of AI in their current hardware and software. It added that data center electricity consumption is currently growing faster than it can bring carbon-free electricity sources online. The company has also used AI to suggest more fuel-efficient routes to drivers using Google Maps.

Australia doubles foreign student visa fee in migration crackdown

Australia said on Monday it had more than doubled the visa fee for international students, the latest move by the government to rein in record migration that has intensified pressure on an already tight housing market. Australia said on Monday it had more than doubled the visa fee for international students, the latest move by the government to rein in record migration that has intensified pressure on an already tight housing market. From July 1, the international student visa fee has risen to 1,600 Australian dollars ($1,068) from AU$710, while visitor visa holders and students with temporary graduate visas are banned from applying onshore for a student visa. "The changes coming into force today will help restore integrity to our international education system, and create a migration system which is fairer, smaller and better able to deliver for Australia," Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil said in a statement. The rise in fees makes applying for a student visa for Australia far more expensive than in competing countries like the U.S. and Canada, where they cost about $185 and 150 Canadian dollars ($110) respectively.

London CNN —A British startup may have found the answer to one of the frustrations of driving an electric car — waiting around for the battery to charge. That is much faster than the 20 minutes or so it currently takes some electric cars using a fast charger, such as a Tesla (TSLA) Supercharger. Nyobolt’s battery is compatible with a Supercharger, the startup told CNN. “This is many multiples higher than the warranties of much larger EV batteries on the road today,” it noted. In addition, there are currently “a lot of unknowns” with the niobium battery technology, he told CNN.

Former President Donald Trump claimed that the United States has given more in aid to Ukraine than European countries put together. “The European nations together have spent $100 billion, or maybe more than that, less than us,” Trump said. From just before Russia’s invasion in early 2022 through April 2024, European countries contributed more aid to Ukraine than the US, according to data from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy in Germany. Additionally, Europe had committed more total military aid to Ukraine, at about $76 billion to about $69 billion for the US. And the Kiel Institute found that Ukraine itself was getting only about half of the money in a 2024 US bill that had widely been described as a $61 billion aid bill for Ukraine.

Younger, wealthy shoppers in Asia are splashing their cash on art, according to a longtime collector and senior auction house executive. Chen Yongnuo | China News Service | Getty ImagesAnd, while the size of the global art market fell 4% last year to around $65 billion, according to the Art Basel & UBS Art Market Report 2024, sales in China rose by 9% in 2023, overtaking the U.K. as the world's second-largest art market. For Sotheby's, the rise in younger buyers is driven in part by an increase in online activity. "The definition of digital art nowadays has been expanded from simply photography to video art to NFTs to AI-generated art," she told CNBC's "Art of Appreciation." "With the younger generations becoming more and more prominent in the market ... digital artists ... will be the group of artists getting more attention," Siyang-Le added.

And Snapchat will now prevent the delivery of friend requests for teens to or from an account that they don’t share mutual friends with that is also located in regions often associated with scammers. Meta in April also announced new features aimed at combating sextortion, including informing users when they’ve interacted with someone who engaged in financial sextortion. Now, when a user blocks another account, any new accounts created on the same device will also automatically be blocked. Now everyone says, “the market is dependent on Nvidia’s earnings.” You’re going to see a kind of a shift in market cap over the years. “These lower mortgage rates coupled with the gradually improving housing supply bodes well for the housing market.”Still, mortgage rates remain higher than anything seen in the decade before 2022, the year the Federal Reserve began to raise interest rates to combat inflation.
