The terror attack has helped push the Middle East to the brink of a wider regional war. One year after the massacre, the Middle East has only plunged deeper into violence and is on the brink of a broader war. Globally, the immediate concern is that oil supplies will diminish significantly should conflict spill over to the rest of the Middle East. Everyone but Biden can see this," wrote Andrew Exum, a former US deputy assistant secretary of defense for Middle East policy, in The Atlantic last week. The global economy on edgeWhen the conflict began a year ago, there were fears that wider conflict in the Middle East could impact the global economy.

New York CNN —The Middle East is in chaos, and the oil market is remarkably calm about it. The chill reaction in the oil market reflects a boy-who-cried-wolf mindset that has set in. Even just two years ago, oil prices skyrocketed to $130 a barrel in March 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine. Oil prices skyrocketed in 2019 when Saudi oil facilities were damaged in an attack that US officials blamed on Iran. A disruption in the Strait of Hormuz could send oil prices above $100 a barrel, according to ClearView.

There was a brief period during the pandemic and the years after it when hybrid work, four-day workweeks, and flexible hours gave employees more power than ever before. And now, employee surveillance is on the rise. "That might create high staff turnover rates," he said, "and there are all sorts of costs associated with recruiting staff." Overall, Kayas held that whether staff surveillance is good or bad, or right or wrong, comes down to whether you're asking the employee or the employer.

Another 11% say they work fully remotely, up from 7% in the last year, according to the report. The remaining 62% say they work from a physical office five days a week, down from 66% this time last year. An American Airlines' Embraer E175LR (front), an American Airlines' Boeing 737 (C) and an American Airlines' Boeing 737 are seen parked at LaGuardia Airport in Queens, New York on May 24, 2024. American Airlines is in talks to make Citigroup its exclusive credit card partner, dropping rival issuer Barclays from a partnership that dates back to the airline's 2013 takeover of US Airways, said people with knowledge of the negotiations. Banks' co-brand deals with airlines, retailers and hotel chains are some of the most hotly contested negotiations in the industry. Carriers have said growth in card spending has far exceeded that of passenger revenue in recent years. While it says it has the largest loyalty program, American was out-earned by Delta there, which made nearly $7 billion in payments from its American Express card partnership last year, compared to $5.2 billion for American.

The decision marks a significant shift from Amazon's earlier policy, which required employees to badge in three days a week. Following the announcement, anxious workers have flooded LinkedIn and X feeds with posts wondering if their companies would be next to get rid of flexible work arrangements. Just one-third (33%) of U.S. companies require employees to come to the office five days a week, according to recent data from Flex Index, a platform that tracks companies' flexible work policies. Investors may be better off if November's election ends with neither candidate having enough wiggle room to enact their economic policies, according to Citigroup. "We maintain our ongoing view that either candidate's policy platforms are U.S. equity negative, but notably in a 'sweep' context. We mark the Harris platform as incrementally more negative (-4% to -6%) vs the Trump platform (0% to -4%). A split congress with either candidate mitigates most of the nearer term risk to fair values," the note said. … We continue to reiterate our ongoing concern that the deficit circumstance will move more front and center with investors post election," the Citigroup said.

The Federal Reserve gets its last look this week at inflation readings before it will determine the size of a widely expected interest rate cut soon. On Wednesday, the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics will release its consumer price index report for August. With the issue virtually settled over whether the Fed is going to cut rates when it wraps up the next policy meeting Sept. 18, the only question is by how much. "Inflation data has taken a backseat to labor market data in terms of influence on Fed policy," Citigroup economist Veronica Clark said in a note. "But with markets — and likely Fed officials themselves – split on the appropriate size of the first rate cut on September 18, August CPI data could remain an important factor in the upcoming decision."
