Don’t let the weekend get away from you

The big storyDon't let the weekend get away from youJLPH / Getty ImageWeekends seem like such a simple concept — two days away from work. Plan "anchor events" for your weekendAdvertisementVanderkam defined an anchor event as something you want to do during the weekend — any activity that's loosely planned ahead of time. She recommends thinking of the weekend in five chunks: Friday night, Saturday day, Saturday night, Sunday day, Sunday night. People can experiment with balancing responsibilities and free time, she said, since creating a fulfilling weekend is so individualized and requires work. Haselberger recommends that people ask themselves: What can you do on the weekend that is outside of something that you would normally do to make the weekend feel like it was a prolonged period of time?

CNN —An Ohio law regulating kids’ accounts on social media likely violates the First Amendment in “breathtakingly blunt” ways and cannot take effect next week as scheduled, a federal judge has ruled. The state law set to take effect Jan. 15 would have required social media platforms to obtain parental consent before creating accounts for children under age 16. The decision to pause the law while litigation continues marks another early-stage victory for the tech industry against a wave of state social media laws seeking to govern how tech companies engage with young users. Those laws have emerged as a response to nationwide concerns about the possible link between social media use and harms to mental health, particularly for minors. NetChoice had argued that Ohio’s law infringes on the First Amendment rights of social media companies and underage Ohioans alike.

The political branch of the powerful Koch network is facing scrutiny as operatives chafe against a decision to endorse Nikki Haley for president that many see as out of step with their values. A day later, Maidment was "terminated" from the organization, he said, and he told NBC News that he is not the only one within the Koch-backed group who is disappointed in the Haley endorsement. As the group started to see public criticism from those with ties to AFP, Seidel sent some AFP leaders an email about the overall response. "Some of you may have seen some recent public posts from some colleagues who disagree with AFP Action's endorsement," Seidel wrote in the email. If Trump feels Koch moved the needle for Haley, he'll have more interest in working with them.

"In a different cycle, when inflation hadn't spiked so much, I think the Fed would have been cutting rates already. "If the real fed funds rate continues to go higher as I expect it will, then you'd want to offset that through rate cuts. And the amount of rate cuts I think they're going to have to do is a relatively large amount." "I think there's a real risk of a hard landing if the Fed doesn't start cutting rates pretty soon," the head of Pershing Square Capital Management added. However, even some of the historically more dovish Fed officials aren't showing their hands on when they think cuts will come.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Organizers of Wednesday's Coldplay concert in Malaysia can stop the show if the British rock band misbehaves, a minister said as the government rejected Muslim conservatives' calls to cancel the show. Led by the country's opposition bloc, Muslim conservatives have protested the concert over Coldplay’s support for the LGBTQ+ community. Communication and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said he doesn't foresee any problem with Coldplay's first concert in Malaysia later in the night. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has justified allowing the Coldplay concert, telling Parliament on Tuesday that “Coldplay is actually among the bands that support Palestine." Anwar said pro-Palestinian groups also approached his office in support of the Coldplay concert.

Trump and his co-defendants are accused of a wide-ranging scheme to reverse his 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden. No trial date has been set for Trump, who has pleaded not guilty, as have all but one of his co-defendants. The Georgia case is one of four federal or state criminal prosecutions Trump faces as he campaigns to retake the White House in 2024. He is also currently on trial in a civil case in New York that could dismantle pillars of his business empire. Convictions in the first trial could ratchet up pressure on other defendants to strike plea deals and potentially cooperate with prosecutors.

Michael Nagle | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesThe largest American banks have been quietly laying off workers all year — and some of the deepest cuts are yet to come. The moves come after a two-year hiring boom during the pandemic, fueled by a surge in Wall Street activity. "Banks are cutting costs where they can because things are really uncertain next year," Chris Marinac, research director at Janney Montgomery Scott, said in a phone interview. In the coming weeks, the bank will terminate around 1% or 2% of its employees, according to a person with knowledge of the plans. The bank has cut about 2% of its workforce this year amid a protracted slowdown in investment banking activity.

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Several U.S. regional banks beat analysts third-quarter profit expectations on Wednesday as higher interest rates allowed them to charge more for loans, although rising loan loss provisions and deposit retention costs crimped margins. Shares of several regional banks fell, including M&T Bank and US Bancorp. Regional banks remain a focus of investor scrutiny. The KBW regional banking index (.KRX) is down nearly 24% year-to-date, while the S&P regional bank (.SPCOMBNKS) has also dropped 33% in the same period. Citizens Financial Group (CFG.N) and First Horizon Corp (FHN.N) both reported a decline in their third quarter profit weighed down by rising credit loss provisions and deposit costs.

Paul Krugman was mocked for declaring inflation is over based on a heavily adjusted measure. The Nobel economist shared a chart that excluded basics like food, energy, shelter, and used cars. His X post was still at the top of the popular Wall Street Bets subreddit on Friday morning. "A totally ridiculous measure," Jim Bianco, president and macro strategist of Bianco Research, said about Krugman's chart in an X post. Krugman, a retired MIT and Princeton economics professor, admitted to being too dismissive in a follow-up X post on Friday.

Cooper Neill | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesThe stock sell-off that hit regional banks this year has exposed lenders including Zions and Comerica to the risk of being delisted from the Standard & Poor's 500 index. This year's regional banking crisis has already caused changes in the composition of the S&P 500, the most popular broad measure of large American companies in the investing world. Companies that no longer qualify as large-cap stocks are at heightened risk of demotion from the S&P 500. S&P guidelinesTo be considered for inclusion in the S&P 500, companies need to have a market capitalization of at least $14.5 billion and meet profitability and trading standards. The committee that decides the composition of the S&P 500 looks to minimize churn and accurately represent reference sectors, making changes only when "ongoing conditions warrant an index change," according to S&P.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court agreed Friday to decide whether state laws that seek to regulate Facebook, TikTok, X and other social media platforms violate the Constitution. The justices will review laws enacted by Republican-dominated legislatures and signed by Republican governors in Florida and Texas. While the details vary, both laws aim to prevent the social media companies from censoring users based on their viewpoints. Separately, the high court also could consider a lower-court order limiting executive branch officials’ communications with social media companies about controversial online posts. By a 5-4 vote, the justices kept the Texas law on hold while litigation over it continues.
