Opinion | JD Vance, D.E.I. Candidate
  + stars: | 2024-07-21 | by ( Lydia Polgreen | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
Ever since speculation began that Vice President Kamala Harris might replace President Biden at the top of the Democratic ticket, there has been a steady, ugly chorus on the right. The New York Post published a column that declared that Harris would be a “D.E.I. candidate, so is Vance. It depends, indeed, on how you understand the role of identity in shaping the opportunities that define anyone’s life. All politics is, at some level, identity politics — the business of turning identity into power, be it the identity of a candidate or demographic group or political party or region of the country.

Instead, Biden’s campaign unraveled over the course of the next 24 days. It’s a high-risk, high-reward gamble for Democrats, resetting a campaign Biden was losing with a new nominee just 107 days before the election. Dunn and her husband, Bob Bauer, were among Biden’s debate prep team and had faced the ire of the president’s family in the aftermath of the debate. Several news outlets, including CNN, reported that Pelosi and former President Barack Obama had privately expressed concerns about the future of Biden’s campaign. That same day, ABC News reported that Schumer told Biden in their Saturday meeting that it would be best if he bowed out of the presidential race.

New York CNN —There’s a popular idea in political discourse known as the horseshoe theory. The idea is that if you map ideologies on a horseshoe-shaped spectrum, the far right and the far left are actually more closely aligned than the centrists on either side. Missouri Republican Sen. Josh Hawley is another young buck (44 is the new 24 in Congress) who’s all-in on Trump and positioning himself as an advocate for workers. “Pro-worker is raising the minimum wage, ensuring people get overtime, supporting paid sick and family leave,” Terri Gerstein, the Director of the NYU Wagner Labor Initiative, told CNN. “Playacting as working class by dressing up in jeans and acting aggrieved doesn’t do anything for real working people who are struggling.”

On an Island in Maine, a Meal Worth Traveling For
  + stars: | 2024-07-13 | by ( Kate Guadagnino | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Brooke Williams and Josh Liberson have hosted more dinner parties than they can count at their two-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn. Entertaining at their home on an island in Midcoast Maine, however, is a different thing, largely because it takes at least two boats and, often, an ATV to get from the mainland to the property, which sits on a bluff surrounded by sea and woods. Williams has been going to the island since 1987, when her parents and a friend of theirs purchased 15 rugged acres spanning one of its hook-shaped peninsulas, along with the ’70s-era board-and-batten cabin that sat on top of it. (They later added a bathroom with running water and built a second rectangular structure onto the original.) Every year since, the couple — and, starting in 2007, their daughter, Ada, 16 — have spent part of their summer on the island, walking, reading, swimming and, in the evenings, building a bonfire on the pebble beach in front of their house for making s’mores.

"I refuse to join the Democratic vultures on Biden's shoulder after the debate," the senator wrote on X after the June debate. Instead, the single best economic news of the past decade is but a murmur of chit-chat, barely audible against a clamor of politicos shouting about President Joe Biden’s age. Bidenomics worked and no one caresFor the past three years, President Biden’s biggest political liabilities have been painfully obvious: his age and inflation. Still, Thursday should have been a day for the White House to spike the football and double down on a message that has, historically, fallen flat — that Bidenomics is working. Rather than doing a victory lap, Biden on Thursday was preparing for a high-stakes news conference in front of a ravenous White House press corps that focused their questions almost entirely on his fitness to lead. The White House can finally cross out “inflation” on its list of presidential liabilities.

CNN —A dance tune with two simple instructions and involving thousands of bouncing, orange-clad soccer fans has gone viral at this year’s European Championships. Prompted by the song, fans link arms and jump to the left. It might sound straightforward enough, but the sight of thousands of fans dressed in orange dancing and singing in unison while walking to the game has been something to behold at Euro 2024. Ahead of the Netherlands’ group game against France, Kemps went to Leipzig to help entertain the Dutch fans before the match started. While Dutch people have sung and danced to the song for years, Kemps says fans of Dutch soccer started adopting it after the women’s team won the European Championship in 2017.

That said, the job market of today is far different than it was 30 months ago. “The labor market has normalized,” Luke Tilley, Wilmington Trust’s chief economist, told CNN in an interview. As such, Friday’s report could provide a crucial signal as to whether the jobs market is at a stable or even pre-pandemic state — or is perhaps weaker than advertised. The continued upswing in claims has Tilley closely watching an underlying datapoint of the monthly jobs report: Unemployed persons by reason for unemployment. The Biden campaign sent out a pair of memos on Wednesday — one to staff members and another to Congressional Democrats — attempting to quell concerns about President Biden’s struggling re-election effort as a growing chorus of Democrats publicly vented its frustrations and fears that he could lose in November. The memos, obtained by The New York Times and first reported by Politico, highlighted internal polling that showed a close race between Mr. Biden and Donald J. Trump, as well as Mr. Biden’s strong June fund-raising. “Our internal battleground toplines from last night show a steady race: we estimate that we’re down just 1 point in margin,” Jennifer O’Malley Dillon, the Biden campaign chair, and Julie Chavez Rodriguez, the campaign manager, wrote in the memo to campaign staff members. In the wake of the first presidential debate, a chorus of top Biden allies and campaign officials has advanced a simple message: The race has not fundamentally changed. Overall, the poll finds Mr. Trump leading Mr. Biden by six percentage points among likely voters and nine points among registered voters nationwide. In each case, it’s a three-point shift toward Mr. Trump since the last Times/Siena survey, taken immediately before the debate. Historically, a three-point shift after the first debate isn’t unusual. Over the last seven presidential elections, the person generally considered the winner of the first presidential debate has gained an average of three points in post-debate polls.

CNN —France’s most streamed singer Aya Nakamura has joined the chorus of voices calling on the French electorate to vote against the far right in Sunday’s high stakes election. The National Rally party, which is slated to win big in this Sunday’s second round of voting, has drawn criticism and concern from French celebrities of dual nationality, worried about the impact of their immigration policy plans. The party, headed by 28-year-old Jordan Bardella, hopes to restrict dual nationals from accessing certain state jobs. In a separate post, Nakamura directly referenced the National Rally party, saying: “F*** the National Rally.” Nakamura later deleted the post, according to reporting from CNN affiliate BFMTV. France’s top sports stars have also been using their platforms to urge the public not to vote for the far right.
