SAN FRANCISCO, Nov 16 (Reuters) - OpenAI, whose generative AI products initially raised fears of widespread cheating on homework, is now exploring how it can get its popular ChatGPT chatbot into classrooms, according to a senior executive. Backed by billions of dollars from Microsoft (MSFT.O), OpenAI kicked off the generative AI craze last November by releasing its ChatGPT chatbot, which became one of the world's fastest-growing applications. But within a few months, teachers started seeing how ChatGPT could be beneficial, he said. A new team at OpenAI would be an extension of the work the company has already done to integrate its technology into the classroom. There are myriad ways to use ChatGPT in classrooms, said Andrew Mayne, a former OpenAI employee who works with educators through his AI consulting firm Interdimensional.

ChatGPT, which broke records as the fastest-growing consumer app in history months after its launch, now has about 100 million weekly active users, OpenAI said Monday. And when it comes to GPT-5, Altman told reporters, "We want to do it, but we don't have a timeline." GPT-4 Turbo can. While earlier versions limited you to about 3,000 words, the GPT-4 Turbo accepts inputs of up to 300 pages in length. OpenAI said GPT-4 Turbo is available in preview for developers now and will be released to all in the coming weeks.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella made a surprise appearance at OpenAI's developer conference on Monday with a message: Come build with us. 1 is to build the best system, so that you can build the best models and then make that all available to developers," Nadella told OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, on stage at DevDay in San Francisco. Azure has become Microsoft's key growth engine in recent years and has helped revive the company's brand among developers. Microsoft boasts an exclusive license on OpenAI's GPT-4 large language model that can generate human-like prose in response to a few words of text. Developers who are building on top of OpenAI can look to the Azure Marketplace to "get to market rapidly," Nadella said.

One founder building ChatGPT add-ons says he's "bracing" for other changes from OpenAI. Little-guy developers building complementary services to OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot have just found this out the hard way. As several techies noticed, that's pretty much killed off a bunch of startups that build "ChatGPT wrapper" apps that did precisely that. Other wrapper apps can create ad copy, sales materials, and social media posts. "AI will be a force for good most likely," Musk said in a discussion with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Thursday. Alphabet is set to report third-quarter earnings after the bell Tuesday. During the third quarter, Google made focused layoffs in various business organizations within the company. In the latest quarter, Google reshuffled its smart assistant that included layoffs as part of an effort to "supercharge" products with AI. Earlier this month, product managers and designers for Google's ChatGPT competitor Bard were reportedly skeptical about the tool's helpfulness. Along with the changes in its business, Google has seen a dramatic shake-up in its upper ranks.

If the world's leading AI researchers use Llama, Meta could have an easier time hiring skilled technologists who understand the company's approach to development. Spisak helped oversee PyTorch and other open source AI projects when he worked at Meta from 2018 until January 2023. Although a number of open source LLMs are available, Lambert said Llama 2 is by far the most popular. "Facebook was not and that's sort of how they move forward and democratizing this, giving sort of broad access to open source. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration Acquire Licensing RightsBEIJING, Oct 12 (Reuters) - China has published proposed security requirements for firms offering services powered by generative artificial intelligence, including a blacklist of sources that cannot be used to train AI models. Generative AI, popularised by the success of OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot, learns how to take actions from past data, and creates new content like text or images based on that training. The committee proposes conducting a security assessment of each body of content used to train public-facing generative AI models, with those containing "more than 5% of illegal and harmful information" to be blacklisted. The draft rules also state that information censored on the Chinese internet should not be used to train models. The draft security requirements published on Wednesday require organisations training these AI models to seek the consent of individuals whose personal information, including biometric data, is used for training purposes.

Shares of AMD rose almost 5% Thursday, a day after Microsoft's technology chief said the chipmaker is bolstering its position in artificial intelligence, where Nvidia dominates. For years, Microsoft has offered some AMD GPUs to its Azure cloud customers, in addition to powering some of its computers and its Xbox consoles with AMD chips. In May, AMD said Microsoft had started offering a cloud networking service to clients, drawing on the chipmaker's Pensando products. Bloomberg reported in May that AMD was working with Microsoft on a custom AI chip, but Scott declined to say if that's actually happening. Microsoft's cloud rivals Amazon and Google have developed homegrown silicon.

"Demand was far exceeding the supply of GPU capacity that the whole ecosystem could produce," Scott told the Verge's Nilay Patel. Microsoft, like Google and other tech companies, has been quickly adding generative AI to its own products and selling the technology's capabilities to clients. Training and deploying the underlying AI models has mainly relied on Nvidia's GPUs, creating scarcity of supply. Nvidia expects to increase supply each quarter through next year, finance chief Colette Kress told analysts on last month's earnings call. Traffic to ChatGPT has declined month over month for three consecutive months, Similarweb said in a blog post.
