Thirteen research monkeys were on the loose Monday after an additional five of the 43 primates that escaped from a research lab in South Carolina last week were captured unharmed, authorities said. The discoveries on Monday — first there were three, then two more — mean 13 of the Rhesus macaques remain outside the Alpha Genesis Primate Research Center in the town of Yemassee, South Carolina. In a statement, the Yemassee Police Department cited Alpha Genesis CEO Greg Westergaard for news of the day's discoveries. Over the weekend, Yemassee police said 25 of the escaped monkeys had been captured safely. Last week's escapees were described as very young Rhesus macaque females weighing just 6 to 7 pounds and, as yet, unexposed to research.

A man accused of murder after a 911 call about a fake bear attack in the mountains of Tennessee led authorities to a dead man last month has been found and arrested, police said Sunday. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said it was informed Sunday that Hamlett, who had been sought on a first-degree murder warrant, was found and arrested in South Carolina. “The sharing of Hamlett’s wanted poster led the public, whom is our most valuable resource, to act as our eyes and ears,” Monroe County Sheriff Tommy J. Jones II said in a statement. Hamlett was arrested in South Carolina after a hospital employee recognized him and alerted authorities, Columbia police said. His case did not appear to be available online on Monroe County court records Monday.

CNN —The Supreme Court declined Tuesday to let Mark Meadows move his Georgia election subversion case to federal court, effectively barring the former chief of staff during Donald Trump’s first term from claiming immunity from those charges. Meadows wanted to have his case heard in federal – rather than state – court, where he would be able to raise immunity claims. The Atlanta-based 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals ruled last year that the Georgia prosecution against Meadows should continue in state court, concluding that former federal officials are not covered by that statute “removing” state cases against government officials to federal court. The Georgia case has been at a standstill while an appeals court considers ethics allegations against Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. Meadows has also sought to move his criminal case related to the 2020 election in Arizona to federal court but failed to convince a judge in September.

A brand-new Disney cruise ship rushed to the aid of a catamaran taking on water in the Atlantic on Sunday and plucked four people to safety, authorities said. An additional 24 monkeys believed to be among 43 that escaped a South Carolina research facility last week have been recovered, and eyes are on a "sizable group" nearby, police said Sunday. Sunday's capture comes a day after the recovery of one of the Rhesus macaques that escaped the Alpha Genesis Primate Research Center in the town of Yemassee, South Carolina. Police cited Alpha Genesis CEO Greg Westergaard for confirming recovery of the 24 on Sunday. "The Alpha Genesis team is continuing its efforts and will continue until all animals are safely recovered," police said. Alpha Genesis provides “nonhuman primate products and bio-research services,” according to its website.

Nicholas Wayne Hamlett, 45, was detained without incident on Sunday in Columbia, South Carolina, after being recognized at a local hospital, according to the sheriff’s office in Monroe County, Tennessee. Hamlett has pending charges for first-degree murder out of Monroe County, Tennessee, and a parole violation out of Alabama, the sheriff’s office said in a statement. Investigators also discovered Hamlett had been using Andrade’s identification and that he was wanted in Alabama on a parole violation, the sheriff’s office said. He had a mental health disorder and “was known to leave home and live on the streets,” the sheriff’s office said. Steven Douglas Lloyd, 34, was identified as the victim by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office in Tennessee.
