She told Business Insider her goals were to build muscle and lose fat . Advertisement“I encourage people who are trying to lose fat to incorporate a meal or snack every three to four hours,” Turoff said. Body recomposition is tricky but possibleTuroff pointed out that it’s very difficult to lose fat and build muscle at the same time because the two goals have different energy requirements. “A high-protein diet, combined with strength training , can support muscle growth even in a calorie deficit,” Turoff said. “To effectively lose fat and build muscle, understanding and managing your calorie intake and ensuring you're getting enough protein is crucial,” Turoff said.

It will mean fundamentally reevaluating our conception of free will and human agency — and reckoning with our tortured relationship with shame. Many health plans have refused to cover GLP-1s for weight loss , citing limited approval from the Food and Drug Administration. I don't know when I first became overweight, but I remember the moment I was taught to be ashamed of it. They can stop the vicious feedback loop where our food choices and weight drive the shame that drives our food choices and weight. But no matter how heavy that burden was, one thing made it easier to bear: I wasn't weighed down by my shame.

Read previewWhile you don’t need to count calories to lose fat — and it’s not for everyone — calories always count. Weight loss occurs in a calorie deficit, when a person burns more calories than they consume. Registered nutritionist Angela Clucas told Business Insider three common mistakes to avoid when tracking calories, to help you hit your goals. Rather than exercising to burn calories , exercise to build strength, maintain muscle (which aids fat loss), and improve your health and mood, Clucas said. This is problematic because a) you can’t do anything about the food you’ve already consumed, and b) you’ll likely forget some things.

So I set about trying to diet and I suppose it was a bit of a control thing. AdvertisementI just did diet after diet and the mad thing is that I never really had weight to lose in the first place. AdvertisementA nutrition degree didn't stop me from doing fad dietsWhen I was 22, I was so obsessed with nutrition that I decided to go and do a degree in it. I could write a meal plan for someone to lose weight, but I now know it's never about being told. It really got me into thinking there's got to be a better way to either sustainably lose weight and keep it off or get out of that mindset that you even need to lose weight in the first place.

A simple, sustainable routine can be an effective way to build muscle and burn fat with less time and effort, said Adam Enaz, a personal trainer and dietitian specializing in fitness transformations. Too much cardio can be a waste of time if you want to build muscle. A concept called progressive overload is key to getting great results lifting weights, Enaz said. Eat enough food, especially proteinIf you're working hard in the gym but not seeing results, you might not be eating enough to build muscle. Eating more won't necessarily build muscle tissue any quicker, and can lead to fat gain instead.

Vegan diets may lead to better heart health and slower aging, suggests a new study of twins. 22 pairs of twins tried either vegan or omnivore diets to control for factors like genetics. While vegan diets may be harder to stick to, you don't have to be strictly plant-based to benefit. One member of each pair of twins was randomly assigned a vegan diet, eating exclusively plant-based foods with no meat, eggs, dairy, or other animal products. However, the vegan participants self-reported that they weren't as happy with their food, which could account for the extra weight loss.

Each episode will focus on one of those states — the distracted brain, the frightened brain, the depressed brain and others — to spotlight what is going on in our heads and how it affects our bodies. But it’s not so easy to know what to eat for brain health, or even how to measure it. Many of us have been told that foods such as blueberries, salmon, nuts and leafy greens are so-called brain foods. Nutritional psychiatrist Dr. Uma Naidoo has built a career around figuring out which foods improve brain function and positively influence the way we feel. What can you do to nourish your brain and boost your mood?

What passing gas can say about your health
  + stars: | 2023-08-16 | by ( Kristen Rogers | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
“There are two sources of ‘gas,’ and not all gas is gas. Passing gas “between maybe five and 15 times per day … is totally normal,” said Dr. William Chey, the H. Marvin Pollard Professor of Gastroenterology at the University of Michigan. Gas isn’t as much of an indicator of gut health as bowel movement frequency and texture. But dietary choices can lead to more or less gas, and there are certain points at which gas is worth mentioning to a doctor. The reason for that is, if things move very slowly through the GI tract, they have more time to interact with the bacteria in the GI tract, particularly the colon.
