Brent crude lost 50 cents, or 0.7%, to $76.67 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude shed 16 cents, or 0.2%, to $71.85. Oil prices rose after the company announced the closure, which occurred at about 8 p.m. CT Wednesday (0200 GMT Thursday), but market sentiment has since shifted. While U.S. crude inventories fell last week, gasoline and distillate inventories surged, adding to concern about easing demand. Both Brent and U.S. crude hit 2022 lows on Wednesday, unwinding all the gains made after Russia's invasion of Ukraine exacerbated the worst global energy supply crisis in decades and sent oil close to its all-time high of $147. The queues suggest that "available supply from the Black Sea is already affected by the punitive measure," said Tamas Varga of oil broker PVM.
"It's just one data point that leads to the Fed cooling down their aggressive hikes, but it doesn't change December's 50 basis point (rate hike). The key is going to be the data between December and February as to what they do next." The U.S. central bank has raised its policy rate by 375 basis points this year in the fastest hikes since the 1980s. Adding to the fears, the yield curve between the 2-year and 10-year Treasury notes has also widened in the recent days. ET, Dow e-minis were up 148 points, or 0.44%, S&P 500 e-minis were up 22.5 points, or 0.57%, and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were up 65.5 points, or 0.57%.
Sale-leasebacks allow retailers to raise capital without shedding stores by selling the underlying real estate and turning them from landlords into tenants. They also point out that companies often spend the money on share buybacks and dividends rather than investing in their business. Spokespeople for Kohl's, Macellum and Ancora declined to comment. It is not clear how many of Kohl's 1,100 stores would have been involved in any deal. Reuters GraphicsRENT EXPENSESIn a letter to shareholders in March defending its strategy against criticism from hedge fund Macellum Capital Management LLC, Kohl's said that a "large" sale-leaseback would "negatively impact margins by adding unnecessary rent expenses in perpetuity and risk Kohl's investment-grade rating".

Brent crude futures for January settled at $87.45, shedding 17 cents. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures for December settled at $79.73 a barrel, falling 35 cents ahead of the contract's expiry later on Monday. Oil then retraced its losses after Saudi Arabian energy minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman said the kingdom is sticking with output cuts and not discussing a potential oil output increase with other OPEC oil producers, state news agency SPA reported, denying the Journal report. Expectations of further increases to interest rates have buoyed the greenback, making dollar-denominated commodities like crude more expensive for investors.
