July 27 (Reuters) - Chipmaker Intel (INTC.O) forecast third-quarter profit above Wall Street expectations on Thursday as a slump in the PC market started to ease, sending its shares up 8% in extended trading. The market for personal computers has tumbled over the past year, with inventory piling up because consumers had already purchased the machines needed during the pandemic. Sequentially, they rose 11.9%, signaling that vendors' appetite for fresh stock will rebound in the second half of the year. The company forecast adjusted current-quarter earnings per share of 20 cents. The company forecast adjusted current-quarter revenue to roughly be between $12.9 billion and $13.9 billion, compared to estimates of $13.23 billion.

Huawei should be able to procure 5G chips domestically using its own advances in semiconductor design tools along with chipmaking from Semiconductor Manufacturing International Co (SMIC), three third-party technology research firms covering China's smartphone sector told Reuters. The firms, citing industry sources including Huawei suppliers, spoke on condition of anonymity because of confidentiality agreements with clients. The forecast yield rate of less than 50% means that 5G chips are "going to be costly", said Doug Fuller who researches chips at the Copenhagen Business School.

July 11 (Reuters) - The decline in global personal computer shipments slowed in the second quarter, with Apple outperforming the market with a 51% jump thanks to strong demand for its recently launched 15-inch MacBook Air, data from research firm Canalys showed. Reuters GraphicsMarket leader Lenovo (0992.HK) posted a shipment decline of 18.1%, smaller than the 30.3% fall posted in the previous quarter. HP Inc (HPQ.N) and Dell (DELL.N) also saw smaller falls, compared with the prior quarter. "Inventory levels reduced further in Q2," said Kieren Jessop, research analyst at Canalys. Still, Canalys said it expects 2023 shipments to be lower than 2022 as consumers prioritize spending on essentials in the face of high inflation and rising interest rates.

Hong Kong CNN —Apple launched an online store in Vietnam this week, in another nod to the growing importance of emerging markets for the iPhone maker. Markets like Vietnam, India and Indonesia are becoming more important for Apple as its growth in developed markets, including China, slows down, prompting the company to focus on places where it’s traditionally been less active. “Clearly, growth has slowed globally and thus put more pressure [on Apple] to aggressively go after emerging markets,” said Daniel Ives, managing director of Wedbush Securities. This has “been the core part of its success in China that now can be replicated in India, Indonesia, and Vietnam, among others,” said Ives. And while consumers are becoming more affluent, the company’s price points are still considered high in many emerging markets, noted Ives.
SHANGHAI, May 13 (Reuters) - Chinese smartphone maker Oppo said it will shut down its chip design unit, citing uncertainties in the global economy and the smartphone industry. The company, one of China's best-selling domestic smartphone brands, said it will cease operations of its Zeku unit, which it set up in 2019. In 2022, smartphone shipments fell 14%, and total unit shipments fell below 300 million for the first time in a decade. In the first quarter, total smartphone shipments dropped 11% year-on-year to 67.2 million units, the lowest quarterly total since 2013, research firm Canalys said last month. Oppo is owned by BBK Electronics, which also owns Vivo, another top-selling Chinese smartphone brand.
[1/2] Apple CEO Tim Cook gestures during the inauguration of India's first Apple retail store in Mumbai, India, April 18, 2023. Cook is betting that those markets will provide more opportunities for growth, with their youthful populations and relatively few iPhones. "We're putting efforts in a number of these markets and really see, particularly given our low share and the dynamics of the demographics, a great opportunity for us in those markets," Cook told investors during a conference call. India led the growth with a 19% jump, according to Counterpoint, with iPhones accounting for 11% of secondary smartphone sales in India. In an interview with Reuters on Thursday, Apple's Cook said little of Apple's direct iPhone revenue comes from refurbished devices.
Profit was flat at $1.52 per share, compared with estimates of a 5.7% fall to $1.43 per share, according to Refinitiv data. IPhone sales rose 1.5% to $51.33 billion, compared with analyst expectations of a 3.3% decline to $48.9 billion, according to Refinitiv. Mac sales fell more than 30% to $7.17 billion compared with analyst estimates of a 25% decline to $7.8 billion, according to Refinitiv. Apple's sales fared only slightly better than PC unit shipments in the market, which fell 33% in the calendar first quarter, according to Canalys data. Both were roughly the same as the 23 cents-per-share dividend and previous $90 billion share repurchase increase the company announced a year ago.
While Qualcomm hopes smartphone sales will recover in China in the second half of the year, CEO Cristiano Amon told investors on a conference call that "we have not seen evidence of meaningful recovery and are not incorporating improvements into our planning assumptions." The company said a larger-than-normal decline in its chip revenue forecast from the prior quarter was mainly due "to the timing of purchases by a modem-only handset customer." Qualcomm forecast chips revenue of $6.9 billion to $7.5 billion. Qualcomm also faces stiffer competition, especially for high end smartphone chips, from Taiwan's MediaTek (2454.TW). Qualcomm forecast total revenue of $8.1 billion to $8.9 billion in the third quarter.

“We’re excited to build on our long-standing history — supporting our customers, investing in local communities, and working together to build a better future.”Apple's newest store in Mumbai, India. AppleIn a separate statement Monday, Apple (AAPL) shared a peek of its new Mumbai store, located at a property owned by Reliance Industries, the conglomerate of Indian tycoon Mukesh Ambani. Apple products are considered too expensive by many consumers in the country. In 2020, Apple launched an online store in India, allowing customers to buy its products and, for the first time, customize certain devices. Apple had previously planned to open its first physical store in the country in 2021, though that was derailed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
In separate reports published on Monday, market research firms IDC and Canalys blamed weak demand, excess inventory and a bleak economic outlook for the shipment declines of 29% and 33%, respectively. Of the top five PC makers analysed in the reports, Apple saw the largest drop with a fall of more than 40%. Both the research firms also predicted the market could start to recover later this year and gather momentum in 2024 if the economic outlook improves. "We expect significant market upside as consumers look to refresh, schools seek to replace worn-down Chromebooks, and businesses move to Windows 11," IDC said. Apple (APPL) and Nvidia (NVDA) made headlines Monday, with bullish implications for both Club holdings. For example, Apple's market share of the 18-to-29-year-old cohort in South Korea has increased to 52% from 44% over the past two years, the Journal report noted, citing a Gallup poll. More broadly, the Journal explained, Apple continues to take market share away from South Korea's Samsung, the world's largest smartphone maker overall.
