Kelly Vaillancourt Strobach, director of policy and advocacy at the National Association of School Psychologists, said mental-health coordination programs such as Care Solace aren’t as good as having people in a school building who can provide on-the-spot help. She said that while Nevada is trying to improve, it has “one of the worst shortages of school psychologists, school counselors, school social workers in the country.” A spokeswoman for the Nevada Department of Education declined to comment.

Levi's has run a worker savings program since 2015 but in recent years has participated in BlackRock's initiative. When new employees get hired at the Levi's store in Lone Tree, Colorado, there's one job perk for them that really stands out, says store manager Debbra Ward — a company emergency-savings program that includes a match. If store workers save $40 per month, Levi's will match that with another $40 per month; in addition, they get a $20 sign-on bonus. But even after it ends, Ward expects the workers who have enrolled will continue to participate after they have built a habit of savings. Levi's has been running a program to help workers boost their emergency savings since 2015.

Local lore says the horses are descended from survivors of a long-ago shipwreck, but the more likely and mundane story is that herds were brought from the mainland in the late 1600s to avoid fencing laws and taxation, the park service says.

Surging energy stocks in 2022 hurt the performance of many of the largest funds, and political backlash has gained traction with several states moving to block state funds from being invested in ESG products. According to AllianceBernstein, there were $12.1 billion of outflows from ESG funds in North America during the first quarter, although that was due to large outflows from a handful of funds. "This was primarily driven by redemptions from a few large passive ESG funds (e.g., iShares ESG Aware MSCI USA ETF ) due to underlying investors rebalancing their factor exposure. Clearly the political backlash against ESG also weighed on sentiment and demand for ESG products in North America," AllianceBernstein's Zhihan Ma said in an early May note to clients. There were $2.7 billion of inflows into ESG funds in Western Europe during the first quarter, according to Bernstein.

PHILADELPHIA—The five Democrats best positioned to win their party’s nomination for Philadelphia mayor have each landed on a central pitch to voters: The city needs a bigger role for police. In response to historically high crime, the top Democratic candidates have called for measures such as more patrol officers, bolstered detective ranks and faster 911 response, and they are debating the merits of police investigative stops—often called “stop-and-frisk”—as a tool for getting illicit guns off the streets. They have also called for expanded violence-prevention efforts, increased youth employment and other steps that don’t involve law enforcement, but the role of police has dominated the debate.
Everton's 69-year top-flight run hanging by a thread

Thursday's 4-1 home defeat to Newcastle United left Everton 19th on 28 points after mustering one win in 10 games. Their only realistic hope of survival is to claw their way above two of Leicester (29), Nottingham Forest (30) and Leeds (30). Last season a late surge hauled them to safety, with the team inspired by raucous support from the Goodison Park fans. Founder members of the Football League, they have spent only four seasons outside the top flight - 1930-31 and three in the early 1950s. "At a club like Everton the stakes should be high, that's what the players need to remember," Dyche said of the Leicester game.

Wednesday’s report from Attorney General Anthony Brown alleges that 156 people—including priests and archdiocese personnel—abused more than 600 youths, causing lasting psychological trauma for survivors.
REUTERS/Mary F. CalvertWASHINGTON, March 30 (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Thursday that banking regulation and supervisory rules need to be re-examined in the wake of the Silicon Valley Bank (SIVB.O) and Signature Bank (SBNY.O) failures to ensure current banking system risks are addressed. Yellen said a 2018 roll-back of bank capital requirements and stronger supervision for smaller and mid-size banks with assets below $250 billion should be re-examined. She added that regulatory reforms put in place after the 2008 financial crisis have helped the U.S. financial system weather shocks, including the COVID-19 pandemic. adding that the financial system was significantly stronger than it was 15 years ago. The multi-regulator Financial Stability Oversight Council's restored Hedge Fund Working Group will continue to monitor risks and develop policy recommendations, Yellen said.
A measure including an end to gas stoves in new homes is on track to be added to the state’s coming budget. New York is poised to become the first state in the U.S. to pass a law banning natural-gas and other fossil-fuel hookups in new buildings, a step Democrats are pushing to help the state meet targets for greenhouse-gas reduction. The measure is on track to be added to the state’s coming budget, which is due to be completed this week. Kathy Hochul in January pitched an all-electric building mandate in her spending plan, and both chambers of the Democratic-controlled State Legislature included similar proposals in their respective budget outlines. One of the legislation’s most noticeable effects would be an end to gas stoves in new homes, along with other gas-powered appliances such as water heaters, furnaces and clothes dryers.
While big banks have dominated headlines, the country's 4,258 community banks, which are more risk-averse, account for more than 90% of all chartered banks. Her comments marked a shift in emphasis to include community banks that were not mentioned in her earlier testimony. "The community banks in this country, we know, are strong and resilient. Yellen's shift to include community banks "was certainly better, it was an attempt for her to kind of restate what she was saying and acknowledging the importance of the community banks," Williams said. Community banks play an important political role.
PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPSA group of experts established by the Dutch government is proposing "Just Water Partnerships" in which development finance institutions would invest alongside private firms to improve water systems in lower-income countries. One of those, the Calvert Global Water Fund, tracks the performance of an index of companies that "are offering products or services that are part of a solution to global water challenges," said portfolio manager Jade Huang. "There is no one-size-fits-all approach that can help to approach the many aspects of dealing with water challenges," Huang added. Lance Coogan, who developed that concept for water price indexing, describes it as "the volume-weighted average of the actual water transactions that are taking place". How can you have those things without having the water price?"
Caroline Ouko, mother of Irvo Otieno, recalling her son, said ’he was special, he was caring, he was loving.’An attorney for the family of Irvo Otieno, a 28-year-old man who died at a Virginia psychiatric hospital earlier this month, renewed calls for justice Tuesday evening after the public release of a video that showed sheriff’s deputies and hospital workers piled on top of him before his death. Video of the hospital intake process obtained by the Associated Press, and earlier reported by the Washington Post, showed a large group of sheriff’s deputies and hospital workers on top of Mr. Otieno on March 6.

Republican senator to Yellen in hearing: 'That's a lie'

Senator Bill Cassidy repeatedly told Yellen during a Senate Finance Committee hearing that Biden has not been willing to meet with a bipartisan group of senators to address problems with Social Security. Cassidy replied he wasn't accusing the Treasury secretary of lying and understood she was repeating what she had been told. Later, another Republican senator, Ron Johnson, exhibited impatience with Yellen. Johnson asked Yellen how much the total deficits were over the 10-year period covered in Biden's budget. When Yellen paused to look at some documents, Johnson quipped, "You don't know that off the top of your head?"
Joe Granieri has plowed roads in the village of New Paltz, N.Y., for nearly two decades. Recently his truck got a name, plastered in vinyl lettering on the door: “Fuhgeddaplowdit.”He chose it from a flurry of ideas pitched by residents vying to help name nine village-owned plows, and says it suits him. “After doing it for 18 years, it’s like second nature,” he said of snow removal. “Fuhgedaboudit, I’ll just plow it, it is what it is.”
