He Looks in the Mirror: At 75, He’s Wondering if Biden and Trump Can Say the Same” (front page, April 10), about Dr. Bob Ross, who cares for the residents of Ortonville, Minn.:Like Dr. Bob, I’m an aging, but still active, physician. I fully agree that at 83 I wouldn’t be fit to lead this country. Some qualities are lost with age, some are gained with age, and some are just intrinsic irrespective of age. To the Editor:A beautiful story about an aging doctor who is a marvelous man. Indeed, an uplifting personal story that stands on its own, untainted by the political chaos that drags us down.

Pro-Palestinian protesters shut down traffic Monday morning in cities across the country, part of a global effort to disrupt economies and pressure world leaders to push for a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip. In Chicago, protesters on I-190 blocked traffic coming into O’Hare International Airport, and passengers who’d already arrived started walking on foot with their luggage to catch their flights. In San Antonio, protesters carrying Palestinian flags blocked both sides of the Valero energy company headquarters, jamming traffic on the city’s northwest side. And in Philadelphia, pro-Palestinian protesters organized a teach-in that blocked rush-hour traffic. In Middletown, Conn., for example, pro-Palestinian protesters blocked employees entering and leaving a Pratt & Whitney factory that exports military engines for aircrafts.

Diptych, dyad, dialectic: The relationship between the first pair of buildings Philip Johnson designed for his estate in New Canaan, Conn., has taxed the metaphorical imaginations of critics and architectural historians since the structures were completed, just months apart, in 1949. On one side, the Glass House, transparent and entirely self-possessed, a work of modernist daring framed in steel and inspired, as Johnson was only too happy to admit, by the designs of his hero, the German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. On the other, the Brick House, sometimes called the Guest House, hiding behind its inscrutable exterior the bedroom Johnson called his “sex room,” as well as the mechanical equipment serving its more glamorous relative 105 feet away. Point, counterpoint. You could write a book about the Freudian relationship between the two buildings, linked by a tunnel carrying water and power — a connection Johnson called the “umbilical cord.” And in fact somebody has: Adele Tutter, associate clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia University, whose 2016 study “Dream House: An Intimate Portrait of the Philip Johnson Glass House” observes that the architect, fully exposed “in his transparent house, nevertheless remained ever-connected to a source of warmth and sustenance, hidden behind a forbidding and impenetrable facade, in a house of earthen brick.”

It has been nearly 10 months since a man attacked Maryam Khan, the first Muslim elected to the Connecticut House of Representatives, outside an Eid al-Adha prayer service in Hartford, Conn. She is still struggling to heal, she said. “I have a lot of things to get through, both emotionally and physically,” Ms. Khan said. “I’m still working on trying to heal and process what happened.”But she felt some closure in a courtroom on Tuesday, she said, when she watched her attacker plead guilty to felony charges related to the attack. Saturday marks the final day of early voting before Tuesday’s presidential primary and turnout so far has been light. Delaware previously allowed early voting, but a state court struck it down as unconstitutional in a Feb. 23 ruling. Marya Ursin finally got the chance to vote early in Connecticut and at a time that suited her busy schedule. Connecticut came close in 2014 to finally amending its constitution to grant the General Assembly the authority to eliminate restrictions on early voting and allow expanded eligibility for absentee ballots. “Too much opportunity for cheating,” JoLynn Brochu said of the early voting option.

Stephen Adams, a billionaire whose anonymous $100 million gift to the Yale School of Music granted a tuition-free education to talented students embarking on careers in a capricious profession, died on March 14 at his home in Roxbury, Conn. His death was confirmed by his wife, Denise (Rhea) Adams. Mr. Adams, who graduated from Yale College in 1959, was not a musician himself. In 1999, he marked his class’s 40th-anniversary reunion by donating $10 million to the music school — the largest contribution it had ever received. Six years later, he and his wife surpassed that record when they made their $100 million gift, anonymously.

WASHINGTON — The Senate voted 74-24 early Saturday morning to pass a sweeping $1.2 trillion government funding bill after heated last-minute negotiations caused senators to breach the midnight deadline to avert a shutdown. The legislation, which passed the House on Friday morning by a vote of 268-134, now goes to President Joe Biden, who has said he'll sign it into law. Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., said it was "typical" and "juvenile" for the Senate to wait until the 11th hour to act on the bill. And at nearly six months into the fiscal year, it's unusually late in the game to be haggling over the funding measures. The latest bill was released Thursday and passed by the House on Friday morning, leaving little time for the Senate to act.

"Students have no confidence that they are going to get the financial aid they need to make college affordable and they are opting out." Under the new aid formula, an additional 2.1 million students should be eligible for the maximum Pell Grant, according to the U.S. Department of Education. However, given the slower pace of FAFSA applications being submitted, "the number of Pell Grant recipients will be about the same as last year, despite the new Pell Grant formula making it easier for students to qualify," Kantrowitz said. "The goal of FAFSA simplification was to increase the number of lower-income students applying. FAFSA completion paves the way to college

A former Connecticut state trooper was acquitted on Friday of manslaughter and other charges in the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old Black man after a car chase four years ago. The trooper, Brian D. North, was criminally charged in 2022 in the killing of the teenager, Mubarak Soulemane, on Jan. 15, 2020. The killing occurred after Mr. Soulemane, who had schizophrenia, led state troopers on a chase that ended in West Haven, Conn., where Mr. North, who is white, fired seven shots through the driver’s side window. The six-person jury hearing the case in Milford found Mr. North not guilty on all charges, including manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide. “This was a difficult case,” Judge H. Gordon Hall of State Superior Court told the jury.

Sen. Bernie Sanders and Senate Democrats cited advances in artificial intelligence and automation Thursday as they argued for a new bill that would mandate a 32-hour federal workweek. "The sad reality is Americans now work more hours than the people of any other wealthy nation," the Vermont independent later said. The bill introduced by the committee chair Sanders and Sen. Laphonza Butler, D-Calif., would gradually reduce the standard workweek from 40 hours to 32 hours over four years. Sanders and Democrats at Thursday's hearing said that reducing the workweek would allow people to spend more time with family and on hobbies. "This would be napalm upon the fire of inflation," said Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, and the ranking Republican on the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.

Giandomenico Picco, an Italian diplomat who as a lead negotiator for the United Nations helped resolve conflicts across the globe — most notably spending nearly a year in the early 1990s shuttling around the Middle East to secure the release of 11 hostages held by terrorist groups in Lebanon — died on Sunday in Wilton, Conn., north of Norwalk. His son Giacomo said the cause of his death, at an assisted living home, was complications of Alzheimer’s disease. Mr. Picco spent 20 years with the U.N., mostly in a series of loosely defined roles that placed him at the center of some of the world’s most dangerous hot spots. Early in his career he helped manage the conflict between Greece and Turkey over the island of Cyprus; in 1986 he mediated between New Zealand and France after French secret agents sank the Rainbow Warrior, a Greenpeace ship, in the Auckland harbor; and in 1988 he helped arrange the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Thank you, Mr. Kristof, for digging into this crisis and for reporting on this program in Tulsa that has had so much success for women in recovery. My niece was certainly someone who may have survived if she had found a program like this. Instead, she was incarcerated for crimes associated with her drug use, and she found little if any help there. I can’t help wondering what if instead of locking her up, she had been compelled to enter a program like Women in Recovery. Every day, people go to homeless shelters as a place of last resort. But some shelters, like the Marshall House in Hartford, Conn., are trying to help by turning people away. On a cold October morning, Ms. Rucker sat with Margaret Guzman; her boyfriend, Alex; and their 2-year-old son, Jayden, in a drafty intake room at Marshall House. Ms. Rucker said she had no beds for them, but then asked, “Do you have any family?” Around a small round table, she began to gently probe. They kept talking while Ms. Rucker listened.
