In a yearly series, CNBC Travel highlights diverse Christmas celebrations around the world. The Gavle goat is moving to a new location this year for the first time in 56 years, according to Visit Gavle, the city's visitor's guide. "He means a lot for us in Gavle, and he's a big part of the Christmas spirit," she said. Teachers, students and parents hold Christmas lanterns made from recycled materials during a campaign for sustainable Christmas celebrations at an elementary school in Quezon City, Philippines. "If I'm in Brazil during Christmas, I take my nephew and niece to a Christmas parade, and we have a blast!
To see who's eating what this weekend, the culinary website Chef's Pencil created a map showing what it says are the most popular Christmas dishes around the world. Those headed to parts of South America can too — the map shows turkey is a top Christmas food in Brazil, Chile and Peru. Source: Chef's PencilItalians traditionally eat veal, while Rwandans grill both beef and goat for Christmas, the map shows. Carp, a freshwater fish, is popular in Central and Eastern Europe, while saltwater cod tops holiday menus in Italy and Portugal, the map shows. In a post about Christmas in Portugal, the travel website Portuguese for a Day states, "Christmas is not Christmas without codfish on the table!"
Yet, no country came close to the travel reluctance shown in Japan, where some 35% of respondents said they don't intend to travel again. The survey asked about "any leisure travel" and did not differentiate between domestic or international travel plans, said Lindsey Roeschke, a travel and hospitality analyst at Morning Consult. The number of people who say they'll "never travel" again is nearly six times greater in Japan (35%) than in Germany (6%), according to Morning Consult's "The State of Travel & Hospitality" report. We expect to see a return to the pre-2020 demand for international travel sooner rather than later. The British artist known as Miles Takes told CNBC Travel that "international travel still seems a while away" for him.
And to add to the confusion, Frommer's website states its star ratings only go from one ("recommended") to three stars ("exceptional"). The non-profit organization Hotelstars Union uses common criteria to unify star ratings across Europe. A project called "World Hotel Rating" was meant to standardize hotel ratings around the world. What do star ratings mean? Secondly, a true five-star hotel must employ people who understand that "everything revolves around the guest," he said.
Ever notice that the same hotel can be rated three-, four- and even five-stars? That's the case with Singapore's iconic Marina Bay Sands. The reason is because companies — from guidebooks to websites — use different standards to evaluate hotels, with some relying solely on online reviews to set their star rating. CNBC Travel sat down with Capella Singapore's Yngvar Stray and HotelPlanner's Tim Hentschel to talk about which star ratings matter, and what travelers can expect from a 1-star to a 5-star stay.
I thought I managed to beat the tourist crowds on my recent trip to Japan. Visitors gather on a terrace near the Kiyomizu-dera to watch the sunset and autumn leaves in Kyoto, Japan. In the months before those rules were lifted on Oct. 11, there were fewer traffic jams and queues, said Aw. Tokudaw's Aw said bookings with her company remain strong for the year-end period, at around 85% of pre-Covid levels. Travel, however, told CNBC Travel that its customers from Singapore have made bookings all the way through to April.
He's also climbed the highest mountains on all seven continents, the so-called Seven Summits. The cost to climbRigney estimates he's paid between $170,000 and $180,000 to climb the Seven Summits, he said. But Mount Everest is a "massive logistical operation" that takes about two months, he said. Rigney climbed Mount Everest for about four to five hours a day. After climbing the "Seven Summits," Rigney said he is deliberately choosing travel experiences that are less risky.
