By Jessie Pang and Edward ChoHONG KONG (Reuters) - The first prosecution witness to testify in a landmark national security case against Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai said on Wednesday he had been instructed by Lai to call people to join protests in 2019 and draw the attention of western democracies. The witness, Cheung Kim-hung, said Lai believed a proposed law that would allow people in Hong Kong to be sent to China to face trial in courts controlled by the Communist Party would be used to crackdown on the territory's democracy and freedoms. He told the court that the image of Lai "was all along very clear, who pursued democracy, freedom and was anti-totalitarian". Hong Kong officials say Lai will receive a fair trial. Both Chinese and Hong Kong officials have said the national security laws were vital to restoring stability in Hong Kong.

Apple and Nvidia are "own, don't trade" stocks, so should they be kept as they are, or shrink down? First, let's address our idea of "own, don't trade" stocks. To main a diversified portfolio, we don't want any of our positions, even Apple, to get much bigger than 5-6%. That doesn't mean we don't love the name or no longer view it as an "own, don't trade," it simply means that while it is an "own, don't trade" we also still abide by the view that discipline trumps conviction (diversification and not don't be greedy being the two disciplines of focus in this case) and that overrides the own, don't trade mantra. When we say "don't trade" these two names, we stay invested in both and don't try to catch the next 10% move up or down.

However, the reason Apple is designated an "own it, don't trade" stock is because near-term catalysts are less important than the longer-term trajectory. If 2023 taught us anything it's that the stock market will always surprise you. We think the best approach is to not worry too much about quarterly dynamics, and focus on the longer-term drivers of Apple stock. China accounted for 97% of North Korea's overall trade in 2022, according to South Korea's Korea Trade Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA). But Russia resumed oil exports to North Korea in December 2022 and had exported 67,300 barrels of refined petroleum to North Korea by April, United Nations data shows, the first such shipments reported since 2020. "Assuming North Korea and Russia's honeymoon period becomes a long one, North Korea could get Russian support on food, energy and infrastructure through Rason," Cho said. Those ships are suspected of military supplies from North Korea to Russia, the reports said. From Rason's port, North Korea has sent Russia an estimated 2,000 containers suspected of carrying artillery shells, and possibly short-range missiles, South Korean military officials have told reporters.

SeongJoon Cho | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesAmong major central banks, the Bank of Japan has been most notorious for its ultra-loose monetary policy, but that must come to an end soon to support the country's currency, according to Deutsche Bank. "For the yen to do something meaningfully better you really need more of a dovish pivot in every other central bank, or the Bank of Japan really has to start walking away from quantitative easing and negative rates," Tim Baker G10 FX strategist at Deutsche Bank told CNBC's Street Signs Asia. watch nowQuantitative easing is when a central bank tries to increase the liquidity in its financial system by buying long-term government bonds from the country's largest banks. The BOJ has used various quantitative easing tools to reflate the economy in the last three decades. The central bank has been cautious in unwinding its long-held ultra-easy monetary policy, wary of any premature moves that could potentially derail recent nascent improvements in the economy.

Faced with a team featuring English Premier League standouts Son Heung-in and Hwang Hee-chan as well as Lee, Singapore kept 10 men behind the ball for much of the Asian qualifying Group C contest in Seoul. "When you play teams that play against you very defensively, you need creativity," Klinsmann told reporters, according to the Yonhap News Agency. Former Germany striker and coach Klinsmann was also impressed with the way Lee tracked back to help out his team defensively. "We coaches try to teach him that it always goes both ways, Luis Enrique at Paris Saint Germain does the same thing," the World Cup winner added. By Cynthia Kim and Jihoon LeeSEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea's finance minister defended the government's ban on short-selling of stocks, an announcement that comes ahead of general elections next year and has drawn criticism from market players who say the move could hurt the country's global credibility. The financial regulator on Sunday reimposed a full ban on short-selling until the end of June 2024 to create a "level playing field" for retail and institutional investors. "The move completely thwarted Korea's plans to convince MSCI that it deserves a spot in the developed market status. The number of retail stock trading accounts has roughly doubled since 2017 to about 14 million, with about one in every five Koreans having an account. South Korea's Financial Supervisory Service in October said it would likely fine two Hong Kong-based investment banks it determined had engaged in naked short-selling transactions worth 40 billion won ($29.58 million) and 16 billion won respectively.

SEOUL, Oct 12 (Reuters) - Kia Corp (000270.KS) on Thursday unveiled three new small-to-medium sized electric vehicles (EV) to attract a wider range of customers in an effort to expedite its electrification strategies. The production of the EV5 will take place in both China and South Korea, Kia said, adding that the EV5 in China and South Korea would have different battery types. Kia did not disclose the detailed driving range of the EV5 for South Korea, adding that it will be tailored to meet market demands. Analysts said Kia's push to launch more affordable EVs is timely as an increasing number of car buyers are looking to purchase price friendly EVs. "While those early adopters have preferred more expensive premium electric vehicles, as EVs have become more popular among more general public, consumer needs for more affordable EVs have significantly grown," said Lee Jae-il, an analyst at Eugene Investment & Securities.
