CHISINAU, Feb 10 (Reuters) - Moldovan Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita announced on Friday that her government was resigning, after a turbulent 18 months in power marked by economic turmoil and the aftershocks of Russia's war on neighbouring Ukraine. "I believe in the Moldovan people. I believe in Moldova," she told a news briefing. It also suffered power cuts following Russian air attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure and has struggled to break its dependence on Russian gas. Moldova says missile debris found in north of the country

CHISINAU, Jan 14 (Reuters) - The president of Moldova, Ukraine's western neighbour, denounced a new wave of Russian attacks on Ukrainian targets on Saturday after missile debris was found just inside the small former Soviet state's border. Moldovan border police found rocket fragments near Larga village in northern Moldova," President Maia Sandu tweeted. At least 12 people died when a missile hit an apartment building in the central Ukrainian city of Dnipro. Moldova's interior ministry earlier said missile debris had been found in the north of the country. Similar incidents in Moldova, which borders Ukraine, have occurred twice before, including in December when police found fragments of a missile that came down in a region of northern Moldova near the border with Ukraine.
CHISINAU, Dec 19 (Reuters) - Moldova's spy chief warned on Monday of a "very high" risk of a new Russian offensive towards his country's east next year and said Moscow still aimed to secure a land corridor through Ukraine to the breakaway Moldovan region of Transdniestria. "The question is not whether the Russian Federation will undertake a new advance towards Moldova's territory, but when it will do so," Musteata told the TVR-Moldova television channel. The Information and Security Service said in a statement that it expected Russian offensive action would depend on the course of its Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine. To Ukraine's west, fellow ex-Soviet republic Moldova has a tiny defence budget and has long had Russian troops and peacekeepers based in Transdniestria, a breakaway statelet that has survived for three decades with support from Moscow. Moldova, now seeking closer ties with the West like Ukraine, has condemned the Russian invasion of its larger neighbour.

The small ex-Soviet state of Moldova accused the channels of airing "incorrect information" about the country and Russia's military operation in Ukraine. Shor, in exile in Israel, has backed protests in Chisinau demanding that Sandu's government resign. The ban will start on Monday and last for the duration of a state of emergency that Moldova declared after Russia sent troops into Ukraine on Feb. 24 on what Moscow calls a "special military operation" to "denazify" the country. Moldovagaz to buy gas from Energocom as well as from Gazprom

Companies Gazprom PAO FollowMoldovagaz SA FollowCHISINAU, Dec 4 (Reuters) - Moldova's natural gas company Moldovagaz will start buying gas from domestic supplier Energocom while continuing to buy it from Russia's Gazprom (GAZP.MM), the head of Moldovagaz said late on Saturday. Gas supplies are an ongoing source of tension between Russia and Moldova, which lies between southern Ukraine and Romania. "Also, starting tomorrow, Moldovagaz will purchase natural gas from Energocom, according to daily nominations, in the amount of 3.5 million cubic meters." It was unclear where Energocom, Moldova's state energy firm, was purchasing the gas. In September, Energocom registered as a natural gas trader in Romania to smooth gas imports, according to the company's website.
But for Eric and many other trans people, the war has also made it much more difficult to be who they are. HRT can be used by trans women, trans men and non-binary people to make their physical appearance more aligned with their gender identity. Anastasiia Yeva Domani is the co-founder of Cohort, a Ukrainian trans rights group. While trans Ukrainians still experience negative attitudes in some spaces, for example in shelters housing families, according to COHORT, the discriminatory Russian rhetoric has pushed more Ukrainians to speak up. The group launched a hotline for LGBTQ+ Ukrainians and opened an LGBTQ+ friendly shelter.

Last week, Gazprom accused Ukraine of withholding gas supplies which pass through the country on the way to Moldova - something Kyiv denied - and said it could start reducing those flows from Monday. European gas prices rose last week on Gazprom's threat to cut flows to Moldova, as the supply route via Ukraine is the last functioning Russian gas corridor to Europe. Gas supplies are a constant source of tension between Russia and Moldova. Moldova and Ukraine last week accused Russia of using gas supplies as an instrument of blackmail, an accusation Moscow rejects.
CHISINAU, Nov 23 (Reuters) - Power was restored to most parts of Moldova on Wednesday, hours after Russian missile strikes on neighbouring Ukraine caused blackouts across half of the small impoverished country, officials said. Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Spinu, who had earlier reported a "massive blackout", said in a statement that all power had been restored to the north of Moldova. Premier Energy, a Moldovan company that serves the centre and the south, said 90% of the electricity supply was back on line. It shares a border with Ukraine, a fellow ex-Soviet state, and is connected to its power grid. Spinu said the situation was a repeat of Nov. 15, when Moldova also suffered blackouts after Russian missile strikes.
Moldova's PM nominates new economy minister as problems mount
  + stars: | 2022-11-16 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
CHISINAU, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Moldova's prime minister proposed senior parliamentarian Dumitru Alaiba as economy minister on Wednesday as the country tries to deal with the impact of the war in Ukraine and rising food and energy prices. Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita told a government meeting that Alaiba, who chairs parliament's economy, budget and finance committee, would replace Sergiu Gaibu and would help promote government policy better. "The personnel changes are aimed at better managing the economy and better trade, which will allow the government programme to be carried out," she said. Moldova's pro-Western government has resisted calls to resign by protesters who have staged demonstrations over steep price increases, particularly for gas bought from Russia. Problems have been compounded by the war in Ukraine, and thousands of Ukrainian refugees have arrived in the country since Russia invaded its neighbour on Feb. 24.

CHISINAU, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Moldova declared a Russian embassy employee in the capital Chisinau persona non grata on Monday, and Russian news agencies quoted Moscow as saying it would respond to the decision. The Moldovan Foreign Ministry did not identify the employee in a statement issued after the Russian ambassador was summoned and informed that the employee must leave Moldova. Moldova, a former Soviet republic that is dependent on Russian energy supplies but has said it wants to join the European Union, said earlier on Monday that missile debris had landed in a Moldovan village after a Russian attack on Ukraine. "It is emphasised that attacks on the Ukrainian energy infrastructure also create increasing threats to the energy security of Moldova," it said. Russian news agencies quoted the Russian Foreign Ministry as saying Moscow would respond to Moldova's move but gave no further details.
CHISINAU, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Missile debris landed in the northern Moldovan village of Naslavcea on Monday morning after a Russian fusillade was intercepted by air defences in neighbouring Ukraine, Moldova's Interior Ministry said. No one was reported hurt but the windows of several residential homes were shattered in Naslavcea, which lies on the border with Ukraine, the ministry said in a statement. The Russian strike had targeted a Ukrainian dam on the Nistru river that runs through Ukraine and Moldova, Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu tweeted. loading"Attacks on water infrastructure and ensuing stress on the river could put the entire region in danger of floods," he said, condemning Russian aggression against Ukraine "in the strongest possible terms". The volume of weapons sent to and in Ukraine has raised concern that some could end up on the black market. The United Kingdom has sent Ukraine more than 4,200 such weapons since Russia invaded. Similarly, the UK has sent more than 5,000 point-and-shoot NLAW anti-tank missiles to Ukraine, weapons that can readily target and destroy most moving vehicles. However, "At the moment," he said, "there is no evidence of increased arms trafficking from Ukraine to other countries." In September, the Moldovan Ministry of Internal Affairs announced the creation of a new unit dedicated to combating illicit arms trafficking.

About 7,000 demonstrators decried steep price increases, particularly for gas bought from Russia. Demonstrators converged on Chisinau's central square in four columns but police kept them well away from the parliament and the president's residence. Three smaller parties, including Moldova's Communists, joined in the protest for the first time. Gazprom has already cut October supplies by 30% and insists Moldova settle outstanding debts totalling $709 million. Ukrainian Presidential Press Service/Handout via REUTERSCHISINAU, Sept 26 (Reuters) - Moldova may revoke the citizenship of its nationals who go to fight for Russia in Ukraine after being called up because they also hold Russian passports, pro-Western President Maia Sandu said on Monday. Sandu said there was a risk that some of those people could be called up by Russia to fight. "We are also looking at the possibility of making punishment harsher for Moldovan citizens (without Russian passports)... who are in the ranks of the aggressor's armed forces," she said. She said Moldova was holding consultations with Moscow to prevent cases of its citizens being called up.

The ex-Soviet nation, one of Europe's poorest countries, allocated just over 1 billion leu - or 0.45% of GDP - for defence spending this year.
