Warren Buffett believes successful investing is like rolling a little snowball down a very long hill — the longer the hill, the bigger the snowball. The key is the power of compound interest , something Buffett often credits as the driving force behind his unmatched investment legacy. Compound interest describes the ability to earn not only interest on the principle but also reinvested interest on the interest. "The trick is to have a very long hill, which means either starting very young or living ... to be very old." For example, $10,000 with compound interest of 10% annually is worth almost $175,000 in 30 years, more than $450,000 in 40 years and $1.17 million in 50 years.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration said Monday that the government intends to provide $1.5 billion to the computer chip company GlobalFoundries to expand its domestic production in New York and Vermont. The announcement is the third award of direct financial support for a semiconductor company under the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act. The law enables the government to invest more than $52 billion to revitalize the manufacturing of computer chips in the United States as well as advance research and development. “The chips that GlobalFoundries will make in these new facilities are essential,” Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said on a call with reporters. But Democrats have stressed their efforts to ease inflation and the long-term investments that they say will drive growth forward, such as the investments in computer chip production and infrastructure.

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Ice cream maker Ben & Jerry’s has reached its first contract agreement with workers at a retail shop in the Vermont city where it was founded after the employees petitioned to unionize last year, Scoopers United and the brand announced Thursday. About 40 workers at the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream shop in Burlington announced last April that they planned to form a union. Ben & Jerry’s, known as much for its social activism as its products and currently owned by consumer goods conglomerate Unilever, said it supported the workers’ plan. “This joint celebration is a testament to the leadership and collaboration required of both parties to create such a monumental first contract,” the union said in a written statement on Thursday. “We are proud that Ben & Jerry’s attracts employees who embrace our values as we have reached this agreement thanks to these scoopers’ hard work and ownership in this effort,” it said.

watch nowHigh schools have been buzzing about financial education. They earned an "A" because in those states, high school graduates in the class of 2023 were required to have taken a personal finance course before graduation. Studies show personal finance education can make a significant difference in young adults' financial behaviors, from improving credit scores and lowering loan delinquency rates to reducing payday lending and helping students make better decisions about college loans. A few states still have 'virtually no requirements'Meanwhile, four states — California, Connecticut, Massachusetts and South Dakota — as well as Washington, D.C., got failing grades, receiving "F"s in this report because they have "virtually no requirements" for personal finance education in high school. Still, advocates in "failing" states, such as California, are working to change the laws to ensure students are guaranteed financial education.

I think of that encounter from time to time as I ponder the unspeakable violence of the war raging in the Middle East. I’m also heartbroken to witness the profound pain of my Jewish and Muslim friends and their growing fears for their own safety. Intolerance was already on the rise but the events of the past two months have sent it into overdrive. Indirectly, therefore, public opinion in the US seems likely to have some potential impact on the Israeli government’s actions. Despite backlash from other sections of their own community, some Jewish groups have marched alongside pro-Palestinian protesters to demand a ceasefire in Gaza.

Farhad Khan has lived in Middlebury for most of his 30 years in the state. The number of such incidents has gone up in recent years, he said, especially since Donald Trump’s election. “Just like the U.S., Vermont likes to think it’s exceptional,” said Mia Schultz, a Black Vermonter and the president of the Rutland-area N.A.A.C.P., who is not Muslim. But the thing is, people of color are not.”I brought up the state’s enormous white population as a demographic curiosity when she stopped me. Vermont’s problem is not in recruiting people of color, she said, but in retaining them.
