Vance’s Republican National Convention speech capped a night Republicans spent prosecuting what they see as President Joe Biden’s biggest foreign policy failures and their consequences. Republicans used Wednesday night to introduce Vance and his life story to the nation. You owe President Trump answers!” Tennessee Sen. Marsha Blackburn shouted at Cheatle, who continued to walk with her head down and ignore the senators’ criticism. Energy security and energy policy are in the governor’s comfort zone and that was on full display Wednesday night. When Trump finally did call Burgum, the former president told Burgum he would not be his running mate.

About an hour before a gunman let loose a volley of bullets that nearly assassinated a former president, the law enforcement contingent in Butler, Pa., was on the verge of a great policing success. Among the thousands of people streaming in to cheer former President Donald J. Trump at a campaign rally on Saturday, local officers spotted one skinny young man acting oddly and notified other law enforcement. The suspicious man did not appear to have a weapon. Remarkably, law enforcement had found the right man — Thomas Matthew Crooks, a would-be assassin, though officers did not know that at the time. Twenty minutes before violence erupted, a sniper, from a distance, spotted Mr. Crooks again and took his picture.

An assassination attempt was made against Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania rally on Saturday. President Joe Biden, speaking from the Oval Office, condemned the attack and political violence. Americans resolve political differences "at the ballot box, not with bullets," Biden said. AdvertisementPresident Joe Biden on Sunday called for calm and denounced all forms of political violence following the assassination attempt against his political rival Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania rally on Saturday. Addressing the nation from the Oval Office, he acknowledged how he and Trump have differing visions for America and that his political opponent will likely criticize him on his record.

There is no place in America for this kind of violence — for any violence ever, period. “I’m sincerely grateful that he’s doing well and recovering,” Mr. Biden said. And the White House said that Mr. Biden would keep his campaign events in Las Vegas. Mr. Biden will speak at an NAACP conference on Tuesday and a UnidosUS conference on Wednesday, even as Mr. Trump and his party hold the Republican convention in Milwaukee. In both sets of remarks on Sunday, Mr. Biden made a plea that — if recent history is any guide — seemed unlikely to be heeded by activists on either side of the nation’s increasingly bitter divide.

Nothing less than the future of America is at stake. The assassination attempt over the weekend has complicated President Biden’s argument now that former President Donald J. Trump has gone from being a longtime instigator of political violence to a victim of it. Vance of Ohio, instantly blamed Mr. Biden, citing his sharp rhetoric. But the images of Mr. Trump with blood streaked across his face after being grazed by a would-be assassin’s bullet raise the question of how far language should go in a heated campaign. At the same time, Mr. Biden and his team have made clear that they will not back off efforts to demonstrate that Mr. Trump is a budding dictator who is dangerous to the country.

CNN —The dramatic dismissal of the involuntary manslaughter case against actor Alec Baldwin over withheld evidence could mean the release of convicted “Rust” movie armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed from a New Mexico state prison, legal experts say. But the Baldwin case imploded on Friday – just two days after the trial began – with the sudden and shocking twists and turns of a nail-biting legal thriller. “I fully expect Hannah Gutierrez Reed to make the same argument for her conviction to be overturned,” Neama Rahmani, a former federal prosecutor, told CNN. Her ruling regarding the failure to disclose the ammunition should carry significant weight in the Gutierrez Reed case, CNN legal analyst Joey Jackson said. Hannah Gutierrez Reed will go free as well.

At first I was angry, thinking, “Now they’re intruding on my therapy sessions?” But then I saw how pale his face was. I don’t know where Donald Trump’s family members were when bullets were fired at his Pennsylvania rally, injuring him, killing one attendee and seriously injuring two others. I don’t know if this event will soften any of that. I don’t know if the Trump family will have the same experience I did — that of a nation setting politics aside and simply responding in a human and humane way. I also don’t know how, or if, this experience will change Mr. Trump.

Americans received a sobering reminder on Saturday of the threat that political violence poses to our democracy. There is much we don’t know yet about the gunman and the shooting, which is being investigated as an attempted assassination. Violence is antithetical to democracy. Ballots, not bullets, should always be the means by which Americans work through their differences. Saturday’s attack should not be taken as a provocation or a justification.

The issue came up Thursday on the second day of trial during defense questioning of sheriff's crime scene technician Marissa Poppell. Russia's President Vladimir Putin and India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi walk during their meeting at the Novo-Ogaryovo state residence near Moscow, Russia July 8, 2024. Their partnership has become more complicated, however, as Russia has moved closer to China amid international isolation of Moscow over Ukraine. Russian state media reported that they would also discuss Moscow helping India build more nuclear power plants. The two countries already are collaborating on the Kudankulam nuclear power project in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. With Moscow's arms industries mostly serving the Russian military in Ukraine, India has been diversifying its defense procurements, buying more from the U.S., Israel, France and Italy.

CNN —Two flintlock Gossard pistols once owned by French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte have sold at auction for €1.69 million ($1.83 million). They were originally valued at an estimated €1.2 million-€1.5 million ($1.3 million- $1.63 million). According to the auctioneer, they were given to Napoleon’s friend and squire Armand de Caulaincourt just after the emperor attempted suicide in April 1814. The emperor “had frequently examined his pistols, removing bullets from his nécessaire” during this time, Osenat reports Caulaincourt as saying. Last November, Osenat sold one of Napoleon’s famous black hats for a record €1.932 million ($2.1 million).

Just 20 feet away, a man wearing a mask brandished a gun in the crowded dining room and with a henchman grabbed two phones and a watch from three men at a table near the front door. Diners dashed into the kitchen. Chairs toppled. The perpetrators quick-walked out and fled on a moped, leaving behind a half-empty dining room where a handful of unfired bullets had fallen to the floor. The stickup took less than 40 seconds.

Germany’s first African-born member of Parliament said this week that he would not seek office again in next year’s general elections. Although he played down racism as a factor, he made the announcement a short time after his staff released the contents of a slew of hate mail and death threats that his office had received. But he has been outspoken about the abuse he has experienced, which has markedly increased in volume and tenor in recent years. Bullets were fired through the window of his district office in 2020, and the office was a target of arson last year. “I can’t wipe all this away,” Mr. Diaby was reported as saying in an interview, according to the Funke Media Group, a major German newspaper and magazine publisher.

Protesters returned to the streets of Kenya on Thursday, some of them demanding the resignation of President William Ruto, despite his announcement a day earlier that he was abandoning a tax bill that drew large-scale demonstrations in which nearly two dozen people were killed. On Thursday, a heavy police and military presence was visible across the capital, with officers in cars and trucks and on horseback guarding the roads leading to Parliament, the president’s official residence and several downtown streets. Much of the central business district remained closed as police officers chased and tear-gassed smaller crowds waving white roses. Some activists and opposition political leaders had urged demonstrators not to march toward the president’s official residence in Nairobi on Thursday for fear of more bloodshed. But others said the killings, shootings and abductions of those opposing the tax increases in recent days — which activists said were some of the bloodiest days in Kenya’s recent history — would not deter them from pushing Mr. Ruto to resign.
